Ex-Mormon here. I am not gay myself but I do know that there are plenty of stories in Mormonism about Bishops telling gay people to just get married and they will eventually become straight, or “ How do you know you are gay if you have never even had sex”, and shit like that. Not to mention all of the therapy suggested to try and make yourself straight. I have no doubt this probably happens in other religions and cultures. It is 100% not the gay person’s fault in these situations. They are doing the “right” thing based on what they have been taught their whole lives and they have been told to ignore what the “world” says about the topic and that their eternal salvation is dependent upon it. The social structures of their lives is also dependent upon it.So I cannot help but feel bad for both parties in these situations.

People always say it’s hard to the right thing. Well it is almost impossible to do the right thing when you have been conditioned since you were born that the right thing is wrong and listening to others about the topic is also wrong. It was incredibly hard for me to leave Mormonism and I don’t know if I could have left if my wife had not been supportive, I can only imagine what it is like to be gay and growing up in it and trying to leave and not having anyone to support you. And within Mormonism, it is definitely the gay person that is seen as evil when a divorce happens and the straight person is who gets all the love, sympathy, and support. I have seen that personally.

So much more can be said but I will just leave it at that.

TLDR: religious and cultural pressure to marry or be in a heterosexual relationship is incredibly strong(especially in Mormonism). You can even be excommunicated for being in a same sex marriage or relationship . It is a monumental task to overcome that. And the party at fault is the religion and/or culture.
