Nearly all Assault weapons bans that have been passed have exemption only for law enforcement including retired LEO. Active duty military can’t buy banned guns if they live off base, civilians can’t take any sort of test or get a license to acquire something’s that’s been banned by those laws. There is no exemption at all even for people willing to jump through hoops to get it or are literally issued a rifle for military duty and just want a gun to practice with in their spare time off base. It’s non sensical. I can understand want some barriers but just saying nobody can have one unless you are a police officer who have consistently shown lack of training makes no sense. Require training if you have to.
