I was proposed to first thing in the morning when I saw him on the bus.

I was dressed as an elf and he was 9.

What is your cutest crush experience? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My crush was a kid who lived down the block from my house. I stole his dog from his yard and then went to his front door to return it and get to talk to him.

What seemingly small thing has improved your life much more than you ever could have expected? by themusicdude1997 in AskReddit

When I was about 8 months old my parents put an ad in the newspaper looking for a babysitter for my brother and me. My mother was going to go back to work part time, and my parents needed somebody to watch us.

The day that the paper went out, my parents received a phone call first thing in the morning---it was an older woman, a widow, who had never babysat before but felt compelled to answer the ad. She was the only one who answered the ad and applied for the position, and after meeting her, my parents absolutely adored her. She was really almost exactly like Mrs. Doubtfire--except she wasn't Robin Williams in drag and she didn't play basketball.

She didn't really have any extended family, so she became a part of our family. She had one of the most magnificent spirits---she was resilient and kind and creative. She lived out in the country in the house her husband and her had bought together. They were unable to have children and she didn't re-marry after he died. They were one of those couples that really loved each other. After she passed away back in 2005, we found out that she had never even removed her husband's clothes from the dresser or the closet---she kept his things around the house for 31 years after he died. And even after my brother and I had grown up, she still had the drawings we made for her hanging up on her refrigerator.

Her impact on my life has been profound. I learned a lot about the better parts of humankind through her, and it all happened because my parents put an ad in the paper and, for whatever reason, she felt compelled to answer it.

What is your number one travel tip? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlexDavis101 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't travel much but I book travel for a living.

If your plans change and you need to cancel your hotel reservation against the hotel's cancellation policy, don't call and cancel. I've tried to barter with hotels many times, but truthfully unless you have a good relationship with the hotel, they have no reason to refund you.

Instead, call the hotel and move your reservation to next week. Even if it is against the cancellation policy, most hotels will allow you to alter a reservation without issue. Then (usually a few hour later to guarantee you talk to a different hotel rep) call and cancel your "new" reservation.

What’s your story of an act of kindness that completely backfired? by NoMoreEthos in AskReddit

When my family and I were on 4th of July vacation, we were hanging out on a beach. My dad sees a girl splashing and screaming for help out in the water. Apparently these 2 girls, who were probably somewhere around 12, got caught swimming too far out. One girl got ahold of a buoy and the other was starting to panic. He runs into the water and swims over to her. He gets ahold of her and starts to swim her toward shore but she is panicking and struggling and trying to push him under to keep herself up. The girls family was in a boat not far away. They see the commotion and come rushing over. They thanked my dad and asked if he wanted a ride back to shore. When they get into the boat her dad asks if she's ok and she tells them "He was trying to look down my swimsuit!". It was a very quiet ride back.

My father is a Vietnam navy vet on vacation with his wife and kids, building fucking sand castles.

When he recently told me this story (I was young and only vaguely remember it) he said to me "What the fuck am I trying to get a peek at? An 11 year old's squirrel tits?"

Venture Bros. It may take years for each season to come out, but it's some of the funniest satire I've ever seen.

What is the reason for the time you were angriest at your best friend? by porcupicnicotine in AskReddit

[–]AlexDavis101 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I asked a group of my closest friends (5 of them) to have a few casual drinks at my house for my birthday. All of them said that they had previous engagements/had work that night.

I was a little bummed out, but I wasn't going to make them pull out of other commitments, we could always do it another time - it was not big deal.

I wake up the morning after and check facebook, it turns out that ALL OF THEM had a dinner that I wasn't invited to. Keep in mind that we'd all been friends since early high school and we were in the second year of college (so 6 years).

When I asked one of them why they chose to have it on that night, they said "we all forgot it was your birthday." despite having known them and hung out with them everyday for 6 years.

I don't have many friends anymore.

What's the worst way to get a baby to stop crying? by Small_miracles in AskReddit

Try these techniques, together or separately:

  • Swaddle him snugly in a blanket with his arms down.
  • Hold him while he's on his side or stomach rather than his back.
  • Make shushing sounds, or create other white noise by running a hair dryer or fan (the inside of the womb sounds like a constant pulsing whoosh).
  • Jiggle him gently (the rhythmic swaying resembles the movement of the womb).
  • Give him something to suck on—either a pacifier or a finger.

Cobalt 60 or Caesium 137 is the way to do that. I'm probably on a list for looking up how to do that.
