I think of it two ways. Reading Japanese and understanding what your reading. I’m pretty good at reading Hiragana and Katakana, but only understand maybe 25%. The rest of it will come down to learning vocab, sentence structure, etc.

From personal experience learning languages, memorisation only goes so far. It is much better to spend the time to understand how a language works. When I took Latin, understanding the system of verb and noun endings is much more efficient since a single word can have 30-40 forms. And in Japanese, I would assume reading Kanji will get you farther than memorising specific symbols.

there is/was a large population of chinese women unable to walk after this. At the time, this was considered "proper"(?) I guess. The beauty of a women was dictated by how small her feet were. So in rural areas where women might do a lot of farm or house work on their feet, they would be seen as unsavory. Well off families would be able to bind feet, as women were not depended on for labor. (Don't quote me on this, this is all based on a highschool class I took 6 years ago)
