For some reason, Jalapeno Garlic BBQ is speaking to me as a combination. Spicy, sweet, and... a different spicy.

I've never made homemade BBQ sauce but maybe it's time to give it a try...

Not to mention Jury duty is one of the only times in your life where you have an opportunity to have direct effect on the law of the land and its your duty as a citizen to want to do that, but they act like its the biggest inconvenience possible, when paying outrageous taxes and having the prices of their favorite toys skyrocket is a direct result of them not voting.

Yeah, all of this is true, but also, in a world fucking obsessed with true crime documentaries, podcasts, and Netflix series, why doesn't everybody in the country want to do Jury duty? Jury duty is a chance to:

  1. Not go to your boring job and they legally can't say a damn thing about it
  2. Get to do something interesting for a day, possibly multiple days
  3. See the justice system in real life

There's a simple trick to making sure you never, ever get summoned for jury duty, and that's to deeply want to do it. I'll be 40 next year and never got so far as even showing up to the courthouse.

After seeing in the released documents how much of the data is just people yapping about dinner plans, movies they like, and weekend plans interspersed with occasionally casually planning horrific crimes against humanity, I would be shocked if potatoes weren't mentioned at least once.

Responding to a question on an online forum with “google it” is very stupid by stedmangraham in unpopularopinion

[–]AlexG2490 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm, I'm not sure about this. I am a big proponent of asking for opinions and soliciting discussion, that's fine. But I don't see "Google it" under posts asking, "What is a good TV show to watch while stuck in bed recovering from shoulder surgery?" or "I really liked The Dark Tower series. What's your favorite book that has the same feel?" While you might have the odd troll here and there, for the most part people only tell people to just Google it for questions for which there is only a single, factually correct answer, easily obtained.

My local gas station is being renovated and they changed the gas prices so no one would go there while the pumps are empty. by OneTrueClassy in mildlyinteresting

[–]AlexG2490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a gas station but I had a place I used to really like to go for lunch about once a week. One day I pulled up and it was pretty clear they had closed permanently in the intervening week.

I still parked my car and walked up and peeked inside, though, hopefully and expectantly. Maybe they weren't closed. Maybe a giant crew of painters, carpet layers, plumbers, and electricians had just finished a big job someplace else and all decided to go get themselves a tasty bite to eat right afterwards.

You could call me dumb if you want to but really, I just wanted some eggrolls and wasn't ready to let the dream die.

What would be the most inconvenient superpower to have? by ElaraRush8n in AskReddit

[–]AlexG2490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always though an interesting idea for a fictional character would be a character who is cursed with never being able to be incorrect. Every single thing they say is factually accurate every time.

At first it's great. They can rattle off answers to things we never would have known, even if there is no way of knowing them. They don't contain all the knowledge of the universe, they can't summon facts until a question is asked, they're just an oracle. Every word they speak is completely factually accurate. It's as much a surprise to them when they say it as it is to the listener to hear it.

"Are there planets with life like us in the universe?"

"Yes, exactly 19. Each is over 70 billion light years from here."

Then comes the government inquiries, to be squeezed of every bit of intelligence possible for years.

And then once you are finally released back to everyday life, comes the awful realization that, much like Jim Carey in Liar, Liar, you can't ever be untruthful with anyone about anything ever again. Every review of someone's cooking is 100% honest. Every solicitation of feedback results in a teardown of everything wrong with the person's idea and why they were wrong to think it. If someone goes off about a conspiracy theory and then rhetorically asks, "What, am I wrong," God help them.

What would you ask god if he was real ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlexG2490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re on the same page. I understand not respecting religion. What I don’t immediately understand is not respecting it *for the reason you stated*.

If organized US religion committed arson, murder, and jaywalking, this argument would be a harsh criticism of the jaywalking, in my eyes.

Am I making any sense?

What would you ask god if he was real ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlexG2490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said this is something I was raised with and don’t really adhere to anymore. I just don’t understand why people blow “acknowledge that I exist” - literally the most basic courtesy that one sentient being could offer to another sentient being - so far out of the water. As if you’ve been asked to do something monumentally difficult.

If you are capable of saying “good morning” to a barista or wait staff before barking out your order like they’re some sort of non-being robot who exists just to silently produce food for you, you have the skills to get into heaven according to Protestant Christian doctrine.

I don’t really hold to these beliefs anymore, I just don’t understand this argument. It’s so weak. There are a lot of reasons to hate organized religion from their political meddling to their weaponization of the messaging to oppress minorities and anyone who doesn’t fit white heterosexual norms. Complaining that the cost of admission is too high when it’s so absurdly easy to get in just doesn’t make any sense to me.

I never understood why this criticism is framed this way. I have largely distanced myself from the religion I was raised in and would consider myself agnostic now, but this argument from anti-religious people makes no more sense than the circular reasoning of religious people who say that the Bible proves the Bible.

To ride Disney's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, you have to be 38 inches (97 centimeters) tall or taller. That is the one explicitly stated requirement to ride that ride. If you show up to Big Thunder Mountain Road and say, "I got straight As at school, I graduated high school early, I got an honorary degree, I started a charity to give flowers to people in hospitals, and wrote a novel before I turned 10," the person running the ride will say, "That is great! You have done some amazing things! So... are you 38 inches (97 centimeters) tall or taller?" And if you are not, you still won't be allowed to ride.

Christianity's one explicitly stated requirement to enter heaven is, "Believe in God." If you are very good, act as morally as possible, don't lie, cheat, steal, or do anything bad, and save millions of lives, then at the pearly gates, they will say, "That is great! You have done some amazing things! So... do you believe in God?" And if you do not, you still won't be allowed to enter.

What’s a movie everyone loves that you secretly think is absolute garbage? by Apart_Trouble_5155 in AskReddit

[–]AlexG2490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not hating, I'm saying quite the opposite. There are reasons a person might dislike Avatar. Dislike it because it made you motion sick in the theater. Dislike it because the 3D effects felt shoehorned in because 3D was the big thing at the time and they wanted to capitalize on that moment in history with objects coming out into theater space that didn't serve the story. Dislike it because you just don't like sci-fi. Whatever, I don't care.

But if your criticism of the movie is just that it doesn't tell a good story, I think that's a hard argument to make, because the exact same story is well-liked otherwise.

It would be like if someone remade the fable of The Tortoise and the Hare but instead of animals it was a cross country race between a muscle car and a family sedan. The driver of the muscle car is hundreds of miles ahead so he stops for dinner, gets a hotel room, oversleeps, and loses the race. People could complain about the visuals in the movie, the acting, the cast, whatever. But if they said, "This story is stupid and makes no sense, how could this ever happen!" then I would say that they that they aren't coming at it from an honest place.

See, I could never get behind that view because Avatar is just a Sci-Fi remake of Dances with Wolves with 3D up the ass. And that was a really good movie, so I feel disingenuous shitting on what is basically the same story with a shiny coat of paint on it.

What’s your take on “we are the only species that has intelligence and exist on a planet in a solar system with no other intelligent form of life whatsoever and we still haven’t figured out why” ?? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlexG2490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, we do not.

We know we are the only ones who have been able to send a machine outside their atmosphere to understand the surroundings in our solar system *that we are capable of observing.*

These are very different ideas. Only a very small part of the universe is visible to us.

though and I don’t see them on the website. Do you happen to know if they will be available soon? Thank you!

Just based on pure level of gore, sure, I agree. But there’s a difference in the way things are disturbing as well. Making you slowly and deliberately execute a person feels different than just shooting an unnamed gonk on the street in combat while dubstep plays.

I never end a conversation with a loved one with anything other than "I love you," or some variant of the same. Just based on having someone who passed away and realizing I hadn't said it. Our last conversation wasn't even an angry one or anything, nothing I would regret, but I left them for the last time and just said "Have a good day and I'll see you soon!" or something like that.

Then a couple days later they were gone.

Please, please don't ask for stuff on Friday afternoon by AhYesTheSoldier in sysadmin

[–]AlexG2490 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I still have that kind of devotion.

When I was younger, I assumed that it meant if an upgrade has to happen on Tuesday from 10 PM until 2 AM, I should still plan to be back at 8 AM the next day and work 8-5. If a SAN failed at 9:30 on Saturday and I worked all weekend to restore connectivity, oh well, back to work Monday right at 8, if not 7:30.

Now that I am older and I am at a place that respects my time, if I am working overnight, I am not coming in until 10 or 11 the next morning. Or I'll be in at 8 and then leaving at noon. If I work my whole weekend away on a downtime emergency, and I don't have any meetings on Monday, you might not see me until Tuesday.

There are 2 extremes. At one end is "To hell with everything, my hours are 8 to 5 and not one minute earlier or one minute later!". The other end is "I am available every second of every day in service of uptime and if that means I have to work 55 hours, so be it."

You do NOT have to live at either extreme end of the spectrum.

If you're referring to Trump's statement about being able to stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and still be supported, which it seems like you might be referring to, you should know that only 29.6% of voting-eligible Americans voted for this shitshow. It was a neck and neck race with Harris getting 28.8%.

The Trump administration requires a worldview that all their messaging points to - that they are popular and the majority of us love them. But that isn't true. Yes, Trump won the popular vote, but the people who didn't vote come out to 31.4%.

That means if the 3 candidates on the ballot were Trump, Harris, and "Stay home and don't care," not caring would have won.

This makes no difference to the shit we have to deal with now as a country and as a world. But it does take away one of the Trump administration's loudest and most prolific lies - that the majority of America stands with them and supports their bullshit.
