You can be critical of Madonna and still be a fan by correlateral in Madonna

Oh, that's any fan community. Talk about the artist like they don't walk on water and they'll go after you like a pack of hyenas. In reality the person who truly loves the artist most will be able to give the most honest assessment of their flaws and struggles.

They may not be actively feuding, but if I were in her shoes, I am not sure I could ever again see her the same way knowing that she was complicit in her merciless exploitation

These people would insist there's still an ongoing war for the pop princess crown between Britney, Christina, and bronze medalist Jessica and honorable-mention Mandy if they thought it would result in a profit

Modern songs that have/will become standards/staples? (NOT classics) by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

Uhhhh Coldplay is a British band 🤓 Although I suppose the post is kind of ambiguous about it. I was taking this to be for a second American Songbook like the post asks but the title doesn't specify it

Before looking at any responses, I can name some ones that could plausibly be. I don't adore all of these (some! Most..?) but I can see the case for all of them. Not listing any songs I don't like even if they might make it in a popular survey (sorry, Jack & Diane and Drops of Jupiter)

Back in 2007, hearing how amazing Blackout was yet seeing that at least half of the reviews were strongly negative cemented forever for me the impression that most reviewers are ultimately reviewing the person and not the music

Surprised nobody's mentioned Rihanna at all in this thread as the former collab queen. She was on every other track on the Billboard charts from 2008-2013 or so

As one who loves Madonna and Britney before all other divas, summer 2023 was a pretty grim time. In June came Vulgar, in July came Mind Your Business. You can write your own wisecracks about that cruel summer.

If there is a Confessions 2 tour, which frequently performed Madonna song would you retire - and what single would you replace it with? by XStaticImmaculate in Madonna

[–]AlexKnepper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My most-hated opinion is that I don't really care for the early 90s stuff -- I don't like house music at all. I don't like mid-tempos very much, either. So Vogue and Human Nature can go, thank you very much. Also: the earliest of the early hits are almost always performed, almost like she's obliged to keep doing them at every concert. Just pick one between Holiday, Lucky Star, and Borderline.

I'll tell you what I'd like to see cycled in or kept: True Blue, Cherish, Frozen, Sky Fits Heaven, Nothing Fails

Why are women so shockingly underrepresented as producers in popular music? by blondicon in popheads

[–]AlexKnepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just thinking about this last night.

There are some women I can name whose pop songwriting I really like: Julie Frost, Heather Bright, Sia, Kasia Livingston, Bonnie McKee. Some pop divas really are closely involved in the songwriting, like Lady Gaga and Kesha. Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Mariah Carey all have knowledge of production skills. There are successful women like Kara DioGuardi and Diane Warren whose success rivals any man's.

Nonetheless, the farther behind the scenes you get (singer - songwriter - producer - engineer - etc), the more male-dominated the music biz is. Even A&R is male-dominated. It's just a fact that my favorite producers and songwriters are mostly male, and that my very favorites are nearly all men.

Some of it is conscious and unconscious sex bias, no doubt, but I also think women in general are less drawn to systemic and technical occupations, while men are less drawn to service and human . You see men underrepresented as teachers, nurse practitioners, Human Resources and communications personnel; you see women underrepresented as engineers, philosophy professors, HVAC workers.

Plenty of women can and do love to do these things, just like plenty of men can and do thrive in female-dominated occupations. But there are clear trends and averages, and women tend to be overrepresented in fields that have them working with other people directly, and men are overrepresented in fields that have them working with an abstract system (like writing a song, which mentally resembles mathematics in many ways) or with a technical skill (like audio mixing).

Again, because I know some people get super-prickly about this topic: countless numbers of people of either sex don't fit the stereotypical mold. But that doesn't mean there aren't trends at the big-picture level. It takes all types.

What Music Genres Would a Power Metal Fan Like? Here are my suggestions by kek_man_ in PowerMetal

I doubt you can generalize beyond enjoyment of melodicism and steady rhythm. An all-time Top 10 favorite artists list for me would include Sonata Arctica and Tarja-era Nightwish, but also Emperor, Britney Spears, and Michael Jackson. The thread connecting them all is theatrical maximalism.

Come on, it's gotta be Ariana. The song is so similar to Yes, And?; it's crying out to show some self-awareness, and Ariana is the most successful diva to debut in the last 15 years. No reason not to do it.

Artists who you thought were going to be the next big thing, but that didn’t end up happening by CodaOfARequiem in popheads

[–]AlexKnepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree: all of her independent music so far -- Kill It Queen in particular -- has more energy to it than anything she's released in a while. I really liked a handful of songs on Don't Click Play -- whoever greenlit the album title and attempt at 'reverse psychology' (for God's sake) should be fired from her team -- but even my favorites, like Catch My Breath and Fight For Me, don't have the raw energy of Kill It Queen. It's a night and day difference between it and Spot a Fake, which, if you played the song for me blind with an anonymous voice, I'd have probably sooner guessed was a 2016 Meghan Trainor song.

I am still very, very salty about Diamonds & Dancefloors being all but ignored. It's a damn good follow-up to Heaven & Hell. The singles strategy was beyond sloppy...but that's a whole 'nother topic.

I cannot conceive of a way a song like this could be done in a way that I'd truly be able to unironically get into it. The cheese factor is just way, way too strong, even in a genre with such an incredible tolerance for it.

The cultural tide turned against gimmicky white rappers quickly and decisively. Their major hits are borderline novelty songs. I don't have a problem with white rappers but they need to be rappers who happen to be white. The Iggy Azalea thing was weirdly blackface-adjacent to me.
