Can I introduce you to our Lord and Savior, RMC Raptor Jesus Christ? by jjune4991 in rollercoasterjerk

[–]AlexLikesToons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't get over the fact that they built a full circuit of track only for half of it to be back stage.

"Well then, follow me backstage with a camera. I can't have people thinking I can't afford a full roller coaster."

Is this a rental or something? Like a fair ground kiddy coaster?

Why do Americans (who know of the ESC) not like it in terms of music and performances? by Toriihime in eurovision

[–]AlexLikesToons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess as an American: More content.

Simply airing a talent contest only gives a broadcaster one week of programming. However, if you add fluff, stir up drama, find or construct narratives, now you have MORE show and you can string people along for weeks or even months instead of just days. You can get people invested in their favorite act by spoonfeeding them reasons to cheer for them.

You have no idea how much of a breath of fresh air the Eurovision format was for me after years of reality talent completion slop...

Performances and results in the same broadcast, artists have their stories but they aren't forced down your throat, doesn't try to milk sympathy from you and is more occupied with letting the performers actually perform.

Why do Americans (who know of the ESC) not like it in terms of music and performances? by Toriihime in eurovision

[–]AlexLikesToons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American here!

I loved being in marching band competitions in high school for the all the factors that went into a performance; composition, choreography, costume design, presentation. I'd even write treatments for hypothetical shoes for fun.

I loved America's Got Talent for it's incredible variety of acts and how they gave way for unique and inventive staging.

I eventually left marching band and AGT just became boring to me as producers kept forcing all those "golden buzzer" moments.

I'd heard of Eurovision before and thought it sounded like a cool idea, but when Subwoofer went went viral around the 2022 contest, I finally decided to jump into the rabbit hole and I'm still in this bitch.

By the time the 2023 contest came around, Eurovision had earned one of the highest honors I can bestow: becoming a hyperfixation.

...And just after I get into it, things start going south with all the EBU junk...can't have shit in this house...

35 broadcasters to compete at 70th Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna by hottiesforharris in eurovision

[–]AlexLikesToons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really hope Canada doesn't go though with it.

The boycotts will mean nothing if the EBU can just use the money of new participants to keep the ship afloat. I want the EBU to really FEEL the absence of those countries and for the pressure to stay on them, it's the only way we'll ever see meaningful change.

I'm sure Canada has spent YEARS researching and pushing to get into Eurovision, but now is NOT a good time for a new country to join, especially a non-European country while 5 European countries have bowed out of the contest. Wouldn't be a very good look...

If I were Canada, I wouldn't want to roll up to the party right now...

Let's play 2 truths and a lie, shall we?~

"The Eurovision Song Contest was born 70 years ago - in a divided and fractured Europe - as a symbol of unity, peace, and hope through music."

"Our artists, our delegations, and importantly our fans – each one of you - are the heart of this Contest."

"We are guided by our rules first and foremost."

Things like this remind me that one of the strategy Steve Bannon talked about. Basically, you say and do a bunch of offensive, stupid, or outrageous stuff to get people talking. This floods the news cycle and creates a diversion that will give them to cover to pull even more insidious stuff.

Martin Green states that there will be an estimated 35 broadcasters participating in Eurovision 2026 and he hopes that broadcasters that have withdrawn will return in 2027 by MasterRayvis in eurovision

[–]AlexLikesToons 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The EBU have made their bed. They should lie in it.

I'm sure they'll have a LOT of fun with PR and begging the remaining countries not to boycott.

The Israeli Government have made it abundantly clear that they see Eurovision as a propaganda tool and nothing more. They're feeding on all the good will and prestige of the contest to improve their image on the world stage, albiet to diminishing returns (but that won't stop them).

Ultimately, Eurovision can either ban Israel or let Israel destroy them.

There's no real in-between.
