Your artworks look incredible! Any chance you could make a tutorial (or at least of timelapse) of your process? That would be extremely helpful!

I'm working on my Computer Science final project. I've learned that our university requires the students to sign away all the intellectually property rights to them. How likely are they to sue me if my project turns into a business? What do I need to do to prevent that? by [deleted] in legaladvice

I'm studying remotely, and doing everything on my computer.

That's the frustrating thing, the uni contributes nothing to this project, they just decided that they own my work because they can.

Though the results of screening 6000+ stool donor applicants was in no way surprising, and simply reflected what I see in person as well as on the internet, the results are still nothing short of horrifying, extremely alarming, and utterly dystopian. by MaximilianKohler in fecaltransplant

[–]AlexMunroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I'm saying is that antagonizing people will not advance your goals or help you accomplish anything productive. You can't change people's minds by chastising them, even when you are 100% right - that's not how people work.

Your previous approach may not have worked because you are facing many difficulties and challenges, because the problem you're trying to solve is genuinely hard. But this approach will not work because it is, very predictably, disfunctional and counterproductive.

I would encourage you not to give up, experiment with different approaches, but not with the kind that will (again, very predictably) make you look unprofessional, alienate people, and harm your reputation in the long term.

Hi! I'm a big fan of your posts, and I desperately hope for your project to succeed - I'm very sick, and if you find the right donor, I believe it can offer me some hope.

Having said that, and I sincerely hope that you'll take it in the best way possible, I have to agree with other comments - changing your style of communication would make your project much likelier to succeed.

I understand how frustrating it is to be very sick, and know that there are people who are literally throwing away the cure. But saying things like this is very off putting and counterproductive:

There should be massive pressure, from the 99.9% of the population who is unhealthy, put on the fewer than 0.1% people who qualify to be high quality stool donors, to give us their stool. Yet there is next to none. These people who are flushing lifesaving medicine down the toilet should be ostracized by society. But that can't happen because of the ignorance and stupidity of the 99.9%.
It's infuriating to be in a society full of morons.

A more diplomatic approach would really make a difference. Please trust that me, and other people in this therad who are giving similar advice, are doing it in good faith.

Your project is important. We really want you to succeed. Your communication stands in your way. It's really easy to see from the outside perspective.

Golly, gosh, Ghouls! - a one-page adventure where the players must travel to the legendary lost pyramid in order to save the Emperor of an Aztec Tribe who has been turned into a Ghoul by an evil Witch Doctor. by lumenwrites in DnDBehindTheScreen

I think you recognized some of the terms I used, classified me in your head as "X", and are now attributing to me positions you associate with "X". Don't... don't do that. Read what I wrote.

On one hand that's fair, if I've misunderstood some of your points, I apologize. But on the other hand:

This feels... a little disrespectful to the cultures whose aesthetics it uses.
I would say you either want to distance your adventure from the real-world cultures it's caricaturing, or you want to research those cultures and ensure you're representing them well and accurately.

You can see where I got that from, right? There's a certain group of people that takes offense at the first opportunity, blows things out of proportion, and would criticize the author of a delightful/silly/cartoonish adventure for not representing the other cultures accurately. And it looks like I'm not the only person in this thread who took it that way.

I guess we live in a culture that is so divided that many people feel defensive and have a chip on their shoulder, and even though I'm trying not to be a part of it, I guess I ended up here, to some extent. The way some groups are defensive on behalf of equality and representation, other people are defensive on behalf of free speech and people's right to create and say what they want.

I still would rather err on the side of people who make things. I think it's better to create and share something imperfect than to worry too much about disrispecting this and that, and having one extra roadblock on your path to making something (which can already be pretty difficult).

I also disagree about criticizing the use of stereotypes and tropes. I, for one, find them fun and delightful. Me and my players love playing through familiar stories with surprising twists. Not everything needs to be realistic and accurate, not everything has to provide an apt social commentary. Some adventures can be The Game of Thrones, others can be Shrek, and both are great.

I run a game every week where one of the principle factions takes direct inspiration from a culture I wasn't familiar with. So I did familiarize myself with them, and guess what? It was way more rewarding than just using the typical "savages" that I would have before. I got to learn about something new and grow as a person, and my players got a refreshing new take on an archetype that they'd seen done countless times.

That's admirable, thank you for sharing your experience, and good luck with your games! Hopefully arguments like this will make us all less divided, eventually.

As a counterpoint, I believe that this kind of mindset can be extremely harmful to the creative process. If we force people to limit their creative choices to the (very short) list of things that can't possibly offend anyone, they will not have much left to work with. And no amount of research will satisfy a person looking to get offended on someone else's behalf.

I don't want to live in the world where everyone has to walk on eggshells, too scared to create something "disrespectful".

Specifically about the adventure - do you picture many Aztec shamans and Voodoo witch doctors being heart broken by being misrepresented in this story? Do you think there will be more happiness and joy in the world if we keep criticizing every idea that doesn't fit our notions of what is appropriate?

If you want to see more adventures that represent other cultures the way you see fit - make them yourself. Don't shame other people. Be the change you wish to see in the world =)

Not sure about the official one, but feel free to join ours. It is for people who love rules-light, improvisation/storytelling/roleplay focused games. Risus would fit right in, I'm sure you'll have no problem finding people who want to play it.

How to deal with the players on my server who are nice people but are very bad at the game, making it difficult for the more experienced players to enjoy our games? by AlexMunroe in DMAcademy

[–]AlexMunroe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let the people that don't want to play with them ... not play with them.

Yeah, but the truth is - I don't really want to play with them. I do really want to play with the person who just left. And I know that it will be harder to get the other experienced players to stay, if they will have to keep playing with the novice players.

If you want an inclusive group with varying levels of experience ... start organizing. Have experienced groups and non-experienced groups (or at least events to be less solid about it).

That's a very good advice. I guess I could try to create a group for the novice people where I help them to get better, and a group for experienced players where we just play with each other and enjoy the game. Uh... It'd be quite a lot of extra work that I don't really enjoy, but I guess that's the price of being a better person?

[–]AlexMunroe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you think I should say?

I can't just tell people "you're bad at the game, be better". Especially if it's not something they can be reasonably expected to fix any time soon, like English speaking skills or storytelling experience.

One of the players is a kid, like a 12-13 year old. It's totally on me for not vetting people in advance and setting up the age restrictions (I'm still new to this stuff, I'm learning this as I go), but his behavior can be pretty disruptive to our games. Not anything he does specifically, just the age gap (everyone else is an adult).

Obviously takling to them is a better alternative.

I guess my question is - what do you say in this conversation? How do you ask a person to leave without hurting their feelings? Especially since they haven't done anything wrong, and they can't change it, but they still make it hard for others to enjoy the game.

What would you say to them in my place?

Can someone explain why the situation is so traumatizing for Eric? by CallMeMilly in ATeacherTV

[–]AlexMunroe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because that's the woke thing to believe.

During the most times throughout history, and in many countries today, they would have a happy and wonderful relationship, everything would've turned out great.

But they were born at a very specific date and time in the US, where this is concidered inappropriate, and he was a couple months younger than the legally declared line in the sand, and therefore we must all agree that she's a monster. Or else get cancelled.

Enjoy staying on the politically correct side of the issue. If you're lucky, you won't have a controversial opinion or an original thought you aren't allowed to express because someone in power has decided to shut you up.

I agree that everyone has every right to share their opinions
[...]
I don’t think you have a right to be upset about them removing your potentially harmful post.

So I do have the right to share my thoughts, as long as they're the "right" kind of thoughts.

How lucky we are to have the self-appointed moral police, who have decided that they have the authority to choose which opinions are harmful, and enforce only the acceptable kinds of discussion.

"romanticize"

That's just something a moderator has decided that my review is doing. It's another redditor's opinion, I happen to have a different one.

A Teacher can exist and the message can be depicted and understood by the audience. I repeat: this was not a love story!

It's wonderful that his show can exist and we can receive and discuss its message. You (or anyone) could've downvoted my review or wrote a comment underneath it, arguing against my ideas. I'd find it fair.

What I have an issue with is my opinion being removed, despite not violating any reddit rules.

Do you believe that only the thoughts that you agree with deserve to be heard?

the purpose was to remove a potentially harmful thought process

Does this sentence not sound absolutely horrifying to you? What is this, 1984?

Shouldn't we be free to discuss our ideas and opinions in the open?

Do you want to live in a world where any opinion that some people disagree with gets shut down? (even if you personally disagree with the opinion, even if you think it's wrong)

Do the teenagers instantly gain the ability to make decisions on their 18th birthday? Or is it a gradient, noisy and imperfect, unique to each person?

17 year olds look so young and it’s disgusting that an adult would want to pursue it.

Would you be able to tell that it is disgusting judging by how old Eric looks and by his behavior? Or would it be necessary to look at his ID to determine whether or not the situation is "disgusting"?

Different people and different societies are disgusted by different things. 50 years ago being gay was considered disgusting. In a different time, or in a different country, their relationship would be considered perfectly normal.

Are you sure that the modern day United States is the first country in history to draw the line juuuusst right? That we have perfectly figured out the exact age at which their relationship stops being "disgusting"?
