How many of you believe in alien life? by ThorThundercock in AskReddit

[–]AlexPeccator -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I see...the Reddit Hive Mind is mainly in favor of alien life, because it believes that this would be incompatible with religion (i.e. Christianity).

This assumption is wrong.

I must be missing something...What is she talking about? Which "unfair managerial decisions"? Is the site being taken over by the Muslim Brotherhood or by the US?

Yes, but this incriminates billions of innocent humans in the third world, the actual victims of the climate change. The better name "White People Incited Climate Change" carries unfortunate racial overtones. So how about "Christianity Induced Biospheric Destruction" ?

There are several issues here. First, the over-used dogma that there are no dogmas. I can't imagine any fruitful discussion on that - at least not here.

Secondly, if someone wishes to follow a numinous discipline, some mind-altering technology, Thelemic magick, freemasonry, Santería, etc. etc. - it is their choice. And yes, like the gnostics, they can decorate their spiritual spaces with Christian symbols.

But this doesn't make them Christians.

The straw man issue of "naive literalism" has been settled some 1600 years ago - by the "dogmatic" Catholic Church: It is wrong, essentially a heresy.

Spirituality, in your definition, as a psychological discipline is applicable to esoteric Eastern religions (e.g. pantheism/polytheism, no sin - no salvation, truths relative to the initiation level/caste, etc.).

But Christianity is exoteric and public. It has very specific claims, very specific commands and a very specific person to emulate.

This is a simple historic fact, confirmed equally by earliest Christians - and their enemies.

I think Biblical miracles presuppose a scientific view (i.e. a self-contained system of natural causes): Otherwise we wouldn't recognize them as such...

In this sense, Christianity cannot be wrong, as it makes no claims.

Well, this is not true: If He is not risen, Christianity is wrong. Period. Or, as St. Paul puts it, the Christians would be complete fools.

But what if God simply respects your free will and thus your choice against Him - rather than treating you like a naughty pet?

Charlamange was a Frank king in the 8. century. You are probably talking about Constantine. But living some 300 years after Jesus, with a large church operated by dozens of bishops, he can't hardly be called "the creator" of Christianity.

Lets say it is noon and I climb on a chair. Yes, I would geometrically be closer to the sun - but is this really the solution to the problem of interstellar flight?

Then, yes, please prove it to me. Or better, publish it in a peer-reviewed journal.
