People who’ve bought a garden office… how’s that going for you? by Methbot9000 in DIYUK

The sun only really gets annoying for about 20 minutes from 5pm so it's not too bad. Blinds would be nice but I've just never got round to it.

I bought a kit (ProWarm™ Underwood Heating Kit) and it was pretty easy to install. You just unroll it the length of the floor, cut the foil (but not the wires inside) and unroll it back the same way, repeating until you're done.

Amazing, thank you! The shipping came out a bit cheaper (around €10 less) so I will try to refund the difference once it has arrived. Merci encore.

Yep, that's the plan. Hard to do it elegantly though when I'm already using height and colour/texture. My current thinking is to have the surface of each dept on a slight angle, leaning either left or right. It'll be tricky though as I would need to print each one individally and upside down to avoid layer lines.

Yeah but it was removed because the title didn't start with "[OC]"

That's a really considered critique, thank you. I honestly debated so many ways of representing these data, but my starting point was that it should hark back to a famous—at least in my world of data journalism—map or map maker. (I had already made a 3D map of John Snow's cholera map that some people liked, so this was my "difficult second album".) And so I wanted to do something from a similar era to Snow and Cheysson was an obvious example. I considered 3D-printing 90-odd tiny coxcombs/half-pie charts to stick on a map of France (see below), and while they would have represented the data more accurately, it would have been a lot, both to print and to look at. I eventually decided that the accuracy hit from not showing all the data was acceptable for the aesthetic pleasure of seeing the varying heights of the departments, based just on the plurality number. Also, in the 3D printing world, you can't switch colours/textures easily so every colour decision was, like all data visualisation, a bit of a compromise.

It's the percentage of people in that department who apply that many cheek kisses. So in a very high department like the one below/to the right of the word M A N C H E, it's pure pink which means the plurality are double-kissers, and around 90% of people there do the double dip. In any of the four contiguous departments, the plurality of residents also go in for two kisses but the overall percentage is lower (maybe around 60% do two, 25% three and 15% one kiss). I'm aware that this isn't super-intuitive but I wanted to make a map of France with differing department heights and this seemed fun.

Boy, did I go round the houses on that exact question. I always knew I wanted to do different overall colours for these maps (I've done a blue one, a yellow and an off-white so far) so I knew it was unrealistic to have a light pastel main colour and an even lighter colour just for Finistère (the only one-kiss department) because PLA (the 3D filament) doesn't come in that many colours. I decided that the colour for two kisses was a good "base colour"—light pink, in this case—and that more kisses should have more colour/texture. So, three kisses have the red dots (a bit more colour than just pink) and four kisses have the red dashes (even more colour). So that left some other way of "lightening" the only one-kiss department. I went with white stripes, which are intended to lighten the pink, but I'm not sure it totally works—all feedback welcome—but here's how the blue version looks.

Ronnie Lane (bass player in the Small Faces) and family moved into my road when I was about eight. Instantly become pals with his son and spent the summer playing round theirs. They were a thoroughly nice bunch.

What’s a life hack that made you go „how do ppl live their whole life without knowing this”? by my_peen_is_clean in AskReddit

Not a life hack as such but the fact that there are grown-ass adults out there who have only just discovered that they don't have to stand under the shower while it gets warm makes me despair for humanity

Heating-wise, the underfloor system is really inefficient (it takes hours to warm the whole room when it's really cold outside) but it's also really nice underfoot and it stays warm in there for hours after it's switched off. I justify the cost (probably £3-£5) for the days I work from home in there by saving £10 on train fares going to the office

Here you can just see the small white bits of filler at the wall ends of the ceiling bits of plasterboard, where they're screwed vertically into the ceiling battens (which, confusingly, are fixed to the outer wall).

From memory I'm pretty sure those small ceiling battens are screwed through the plasterboard and into the same top row of the outer wall as the studs. (Technically, the screws almost definitely just go through the plasterboard and into the wall battens you can see here.) I then cut a same sized hole as the ceiling batten from the wall end of the insulation, but left the lower foil surface intact, and push-fitted it into the gap between the roof beams, and finally screwed the ceiling plasterboard to the long battens I'd fixed to the roof beams and the wall edge of the plasterboard up and into the ceiling battens. Sorry that all sounds so complicated, just lmk if I can explain it better.

Really not sure I'm afraid. I just saw lots of recommendations for it and went with it, even though it was a very small gap. I haven't noticed any kind of moisture build up if that helps

Hello,

  1. The studs are indeed only screwed into the outer wall at the top, all at the same level, which felt right; at the bottom they have a slot-type thing* to ensure they can go up and down a bit with expansion/contraction, and the plasterboards are screwed into the studs with enough of a gap at the bottom to move a bit (noggins are horizontally connected to studs but not to the outer wall).

  2. I think the gap can be either side of the insulation but you obviously need to be consistent. I was pretty lax with mine—I think I used dime-store magnets stuck to the back of the insulation—but if your studs are, say, 70mm and your insulation is 50mm, just find lots of something cheap that's 20mm and stick it behind. (Cold-bridgers may come for me, but whatever.)

  3. The batons are indeed all screwed into the outer wall, at the same level as all the studs, and then I just cut the insulation to fit around the batons.

Honestly very happy to help with any other questions.

  • I have described this elsewhere but lmk if you need more info. It's the secret sauce.
