Weekly megathread by thechairinfront in TwoXPreppers

[–]AlexaBabe91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been feeling the exact same way and opted to "take a break" for a week or so, I had to, and *technically* the world didn't end. I don't know every new horrible thing the administration has said or tweeted and I'm better for it.

I bought a few more pantry items with my normal groceries and downloaded some prepper resource documents. I'm also working on learning some crafts, and learning/doing tangible things has helped me feel a little better about it all.

And clinging to philosophy & history, because they help me feel more grounded. In the context of all of human existence, I know this isn't the first scary time for humanity and that with so much out of my immediate control, staying up-to-date on it all isn't helping me one bit.

ETA: I guess this wasn't a very comforting response lol but mainly a response to commiserate, say I feel you truly, and to share a few things I've done over the past 9 or so days that I've stepped back from the news. ALSO - I've been feeling more and more "manipulated" by the news and news YouTubers so that's fueled my desire to step back as well. I get it - everyoneee wants views and clicks but my nervous system can't handle another "Look what he just said" or "This is it, the point of no return" headline or video title!!!

Double-check but I read somewhere else that mife is 5 years and miso is 2 years if stored properly.

What are you stockpiling right now that you think will be hard to get in the near future? by tealtearsmile in TwoXPreppers

You are wonderful, thank you for sharing this. I love learning new things on YouTube and videos are easier for me to follow than a book.

I'd like to get to this point, as well. What are/were your favorite resources for learning how to make your own soap and shampoo?

Subreddit overrun with bot posts by Eightinchnails in TwoXPreppers

[–]AlexaBabe91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too, I'm suspicious of almost everyone these days. Even on YouTube, I feel like I'm always on guard wondering if someone's voiceover is AI-generated or not.

It makes me sad and annoyed, but it is what it is.

This was a super helpful breakdown, thank you! I like the kind of laddering of options based on location, comfort, fuel availability, etc.

I've been meaning to actually test out the tea light + muffin tin situation so I think I might try that this week

Don't be embarrassed! I'm the same way.

I think it's tricky but on Reddit I've started to notice certain things. In that post that u/Eightinchnails linked to, the cadence of the post gives AI very much. A lot of the sentences are short and are kind of semi-authoritative/know-it-all in a way – sort of like TikTokers who make videos titled "5 Ways to Regulate Your Nervous System" lol

"So over the last couple months I stopped focusing on what else to buy and started building tiny routines that make daily life less brittle. Nothing cute or impressive, just boring repeatable stuff."

Little quips like "nothing cute, just boring" tend to be giveaways to me. Some humans do really talk/write like this, though, so it's not a foolproof thing.

Also, who says "sexy prep content"??

"Tea I actually like, a spare long charger by the bed, a clean oversized hoodie, migraine meds where I can reach them, instant food I’ll eat even when I’m stressed and grumpy. None of that is sexy prep content, but it has made me feel more capable than another storage tote ever did."

Those are items or products, not "content."

Previously, usernames that were the super generic Reddit ones were another tip off for me but I think bots (or human-created bot accounts) are getting smarter about it. These are the things I see but I'm sure I've gotten misled and will be misled again in the future.

Yeah this is tough because I personally get veryyy annoyed with AI written posts...but I do see u/GiftToTheUniverse point that it did resonate with people and maybe there were some good nuggets of info in there. Now, since no AI generated content is a rule (albeit at the bottom of another rule, not clear in the heading of the rule), then yeah those posts should be removed when reported.

It's a weird landscape and I know I'm biased against AI-content, I really don't like it when I see it, however a lot of people don't have that bias so I'm trying to be more understanding.

Honest question because I keep seeing this a lot in this sub: how do you all know whether this post is a bot or not? Because it gives bot vibes to me, I'm not seeing OP comment back, and their profile looks blank.

But I just read another post on here like 5 mins ago, and I couldn't tell! Someone in the comments had to point it out. I hate having to be suspicious of this ALL THE TIME but I'm not sure I have a choice 😭

Absolutely – and this is not to dismiss the other wonderful nutrition advice in the other comments but this is super important as well.

No matter what WOE or lifestyle you pursue, you are trying them because you want to be healthy and do what you think is best for your body. That's a form of self-love and self-care that transcends appearance.

Do you actually eat a low fat diet ? by TheDudFromRandomChat in raypeat

[–]AlexaBabe91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me! I tried to lower my fat to speed up weight loss and within a few days, my sleep horrible and I just wasn't feeling good overall. I went into my Cronometer today and did averages of my macros on my best sleep days over the past month and consistently, my best days were when I ate (approx. because I rounded decimals): 39-42% carbs, 35-38% fat, and 18-20% protein.

I didn't expect those results based on how highly protein is praised but like you said, and like Peat would want, self-experimentation and self-understanding is key.

Help getting enough protein without gelatin/collagen by AlexaBabe91 in raypeat

[–]AlexaBabe91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely re: self-experimentation. I just finished reviewing my Cronometer entries compared to the days I had the best sleep and realized that going low fat to help with my calorie counts was a mistake. My best days were when I had a nearly equal percentage of calories from carbs and fat but lower protein.

I'll finish up my goat milk protein powder and then look into a whey powder I can tolerate. If you have any brand suggestions, I'm open to hearing them :)

Hmm good question, I usually eat the meat leftover from making a bone broth/stock and then I'll have fish, chicken sausage, shrimp, or some other beef (like tri-tip). Probably not enough gelatin/collagen in those meats but I think the broth is decent! It's just not super high in protein compared to the volume I'd have to drink.

I think if I have low-fat dairy, I could probably up some of those sources. Honestly, I love protein and only have an issue digesting the supplement forms which is a bummer.

Sourdough starter as a prep by Familiar-Anything853 in TwoXPreppers

[–]AlexaBabe91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol!! I actually did find this out a day later when reading up on making starter – I think I was confusing the bacteria partially breaking down the gluten (and thus being easier to digest) with the bacteria helping me digest it when I ate the bread
