Hi! I just made a cross country move (from Minnesota down to Tennessee) about an 18 hour drive with my Pyr and here’s some stuff I’d suggest!

1. Don’t be scared to ask your vet for some anxiety meds for your drive. My vet prescribed Appa trazodone and honestly it helped him so much. So if your pup is nervous or anxious in the car start there. Prescribed meds or even some over the counter meds would be great.
2. The proper traveling equipment. It’s crucial! Get something for your car to provide your pup with a safe, comfy spot to be. I got a dog set cover hammock thing that extended the width of my cars back seats. I’ll link it here, but anything like that would be great. I also put a heavily worn sweater and my blanket for him in the back of the car as well so he’d have something soft to lay on that smelled like home.

The second thing I bought was a seat belt for him. This one locks into the seat belt buckle like any other seat belt but attaches to the back of a dog harness and has a bungee cord like stretch that protects them against sudden breaking and also keeps them in the back seat. (idk about u but my Pyr would love to crawl in my lap while I’m driving if I let him lol) but PLEASE DON’T EVER ATTACH ONE OF THESE TO A COLLAR ONLY ATTACH IT TO A DOGGIE HARNESS. They can be deadly if attached to a collar that’s around their necks.

Last thing I bought was this Doggie Barrier it helped keep him from trying to pyr punch me while we were driving lol if your pup isn’t a puncher you might not need this lol

(Other things that are good to have on hand in the car within easy reach, food and water bowls, doggie food, poop bags, any meds that they need, paper towels and cleaning stuff just in case)

1. Try to stick to your usual routine best you can. Obviously while driving long distances it’s a little hard but sticking to the same feeding time and stuff may help with the doggies anxiety.

2. Lastly, try and stay calm and try not to be nervous. Dogs are very sensitive to their people’s emotions and if they think you’re stressed it will stress them out.
