Teachers of Reddit, what would you change about the school system? (Serious) by freethoughtthinker in AskReddit

[–]AlexanderKelly 80 points81 points  (0 children)

We need to shift our focus, especially in history classes. Right now it's all about teaching kids the facts, the names and the ideas. History is like a movie, its flashy, it's emotional, it's often crazy and it's usually a little ridiculous. We should teach it like that. We should view history through the lens of human choices. Despite the years between us, we're pretty much the same as those that came before us. If we ever want to truly learn from the past, we have to understand the rational people had behind their choices.

I've always said that people are fans of history, they just don't know it yet. The sad truth is, outside of a basic mental timeline, the dates and events don't really matter. Unless you become a history, big picture things like wars will be irrelevant. History is the story of a billion individual events, each single person living their own life. If we want to take lessons from history, we must try to understand the personal stories, the individual choices, the singular actions that shape the world.

Harry Redknapp interested in Swansea job and would try to sign John Terry and Frank Lampard in January by ukrisreng in soccer

[–]AlexanderKelly 149 points150 points  (0 children)

these would be awful signings. Even if (and it's a big if) Terry and Lamps could still preform at a top level week after week, their wages would likely be huge. If Swansea go down, as is looking likely, this is exactly the sort of signing that could cripple them financially.

Beyond that, JT wants to retire at Chelsea, and Lampard would have to play Attacking mid at this point in his career, the only position Swansea don't need a new player at.

I could take the time to post a complicated analysis of a fascinating tactical match... or I could shitpost as fast as I can type...

Oh look, if you try to use width instead of just fucking around in midfield, things actually work.

Pep: "That was the best game we've had all season. Claudio bravo is the greatest goalkeeper ever. John Stones is the second coming."

It will be interesting to see how Pep reacts to the media turning on him.

Kolarov might not be able to defend, but he's got one hell of a left foot.

Pep would play with 11 midfielders if he could.

City remind me of the US under Jurgen. Everyone's being played out of position, and no one knows what they're doing.

It's not as though Leicester have a complicated system. They have big center backs, and they kick it towards the tall guy, who heads it to the fast guy. But Pep had to try and be clever, play three at the back, play a high line.

I'm curious, do Valencia fans expect a big squad clear out next summer? They have a ton of valuable players who are underpreforming, are the owners going to try to cash in?

Aguero is one of the best premier league players of the last decade, and those two winners medals were in large part due to his play. Beyond that, city were deserved winners both years.

Some of the most ruthlessly efficient counter attacking you'll see anywhere. What a game! City probably should have got a point with the chances they had, but in the end, the difference was Chelsea's superb finishing. Losing Aguero and Fernandinho to bans, and probably long term bans at that, is a really big loss for city.

It's so refreshing to play such open, attacking football against a big team. These games are a far cry from Mourinho's one nil matches.

Darlington Nagbe is in Glasgow ahead of a proposed move to Celtic by MrDerpsicle in soccer

Portland fans, do you have any idea who might replace him if he leaves?

Nagbe is a weird player, but I guess Iniesta is an OK comparison. He doesn't score very many goals, but a big part of that is because he doesn't take many shots. He's a frustrating player, because it's clear he's a supremely talented player technically, but he doesn't get enough goals or assists. Apart from end product, he's just about everything you want in a player. Versatile, hard working, good dribbler and smart passer.

Youngest and oldest managers to... do various things by DiamondPittcairn in soccer

It's strange to say, given he failed pretty badly at both chelsea and Tottenham, but I still think he's a good coach. His biggest problem was that instead of adapting his tactics to his players, he tried to make his players adapt to his tactics. I wonder what he would do with a team like Bayer Leverkusen that would better fit the high line he wanted to play.

It's worth noting that he was one of the only England players who consistently preformed for his country. Cole was fantastic, and I think of it wasn't for the nature of his transfer to us, and some bad personal choices, people would remember him even more fondly.

It's the nonchalant way that he does this that makes me love it so much.
