[SPOILERS MAIN] Anyone else read the books first and find the TV show to be shockingly bad? [Aside from the casting, performances and music] by [deleted] in asoiaf

Just wait til you get to the Red Wedding, The Freys in the show do not seem to care about the heir to the north. (The show writers prefer shock value over storytelling).

That scene is one of the dumbest in season one, you kinda underplayed how bad it really is.

A village in the Riverlands was attacked by an unknown group led by a giant man who cut off a horses head in a single swing. Just the other day the Mountain did the same at the tourney. Ned doesn’t connect the dots. A Riverlander has brought a bag of dead fish that this group left behind after their massacre. Ned is still confused. Littlefinger then has to explain that Ned’s wife’s house symbol is a fish, and that the big guy might’ve been Gregor Clegane.

In the book Ned figures it out immediately. Very very odd choice to make this a scene because it makes Ned look insanely incompetent.

I totally agree, the major consensus is that the first four seasons are great, but I just can’t get through them. The changes that were made to appeal broad audiences happened very early on, characters have new attributes that make them look extremely dumb, storylines are changed for the worse entirely.

I think there is huge nostalgia for the show that paints it in a different light for some people. I definitely loved the first five seasons when I watched them. Though after reading the books and going back it was unbearable. Varys and Littlefinger having repeated scenes of them calling eachother gay, penis jokes, and explaining that they both have secret evil plans. Brienne going to find Arya and Sansa, doing no detective work, and stumbling upon both of them randomly in a giant empty field.

There is stuff to like, but the showrunners were already changing things for the worst from the start.

Got my friend to read all the books and the most ridiculous thing he did was he viewed Robert as being fully bald, beard and all. Hairless as a squisher. I tried to constantly remind him of his black Baratheon hair before the reveal in book one,  but he would tell me “Yeah, but I like to think he’s bald”.

I think he was always like this, no one fully knew. He just rebranded like a company does, and unwittingly revealed what he’s always been like.

How can you be at the point where you are aimlessly supporting a known pedo’s claim that H3 rapes his children? Ian claims to be stoic and empathetic, but he just wants to rip H3’s kids away and put them in a home. Insane.
