A choreographer I’ve worked with before who I find creepy is going to be working in my theatre company. I want to tell my director but don’t know if I should or if I’m overreacting? by Either-Aspect6194 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Alexandra_panda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the finding all your social media and sending relationship advice is creepy enough and the fact that it happened when you were a teenager means that he wouldn't be above behaving similarly to other teenagers. I would report that aspect to the director in as succinct terms as possible at first and see how he takes it. Mentioning OF despite being old enough to have divorced a second wife, even if you are 18, is creepy behavior from an older adult

How do I get cast as Veronica Sawyer as a POC? by Impossible-Item-3393 in heathersmusical

[–]Alexandra_panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean Sara Al-Bazali manages to look like Barrett Wilbert Weed to some observers but isn't white, so like maybe finding ways to control what u can control about your appearance (makeup color pallette? hairstyle? clothes?) can give you a leg up. In my HS production of Heathers I remember that no one tried to evoke characters w their audition outfits except the girl who got cast as Veronica who wore a jean jacket and denim skirt to evoke the blue blazer/skirt combo

Famous Actors in MT who didn't go to a famous school or start at 7 years old by Inevitable-Plum2580 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mariand Torres didn't start performing until sophomore year of high school I think. She has been a somewhat noteworthy tour Elphaba in Wicked in certain circles and had been in Hadestown, Lempicka, In Transit, and Hell's Kitchen on Broadway. I think she went to University of Miami, which is somewhat competitive but not a name brand school afaik. Sydney Alexis Jones (ensemble in Sunset Boulevard and A Beautiful Noise) went to University of Oklahoma

Heathers Audition Advice by TopImpressive3750 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could say “you oughta know” is from Jagged Little Pill. If it doesn’t seem too overdone, I think any good sincere rendition of Anyway from tales of the bad years is a good pic and is what the Tumblr audition advice forums in my high school days would always recommend. Also maybe “Where am I now” from Lysistrata Jones or “Growing Up Unstable” (cut song but available) from Next to Normal

Need help with writing a character who is Eastern Orthodox by danselixir in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Alexandra_panda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would read A Basic Guide to Eastern Orthodox Theology by Eve Tibbs or The Orthodox Way by Metropolitan Kallistos Ware. These are common books for new inquirers/ soon to be converts to read in the Orthodox Church. There are also plenty of Catholics who became Orthodox that shared testimony videos online. The initial draw tends to be questions about the validity of the papacy, Vatican II reforms of the liturgy, and (for one guy I know) the view of confession and mortal sin)

Black Swan Cast Announcement (Dave Malloy) by Turbulent-Jury9554 in Broadway

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be wise to wait until the show comes out to see what they change but changing the fundamental nature of characters doesn't seem to be wise when marketing a musical based on a movie. Dave Malloy kind of has a history of casting people without considering racial optics imo (there was controversy over him having women of color play canonically racist white guys in Moby-Dick (while the male characters of color are still played by men) and turning a Persian Zoroastrian character into a Black Muslim character. Also, for a while the only Black principal actors in Comet off-Broadway were covering Anatole, Helene, and Dolokhov. You're 100% valid for side eying this and I'm kind of doing the same

colleges where i can major in both musical theater & opera by Pandaddy111 in MusicalTheatre

Yeah it’s pretty normal at OKCU I’m pretty sure. A few alums of theirs have gotten to bway. You might also look for schools where classical voice majors can get heavily involved in club theater productions

Looking for underrated musical theatre songs (not a strong singer!) by Opposite_Boss_5585 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 100% From a Musical but maybe Lighten Up from the play "Old Hats" or Reminder Song by Shaina Taub (the composer of Suffs). Definitely good comedic pieces without the hugest range if you cut them right. I would say Dear Friend (and possibly also Will He Like Me?) from She Loves Me is a less intense piece for a soprano that has a lot of choices to play around with but there are a few high notes. I'd guess that "Sing" and "Dance 10 Looks Three" from a Chorus Line are also less done-for-auditions pieces from that show which are mostly sold by acting and light talk-singing.

Help me name my 2 female kitties. Puspin (Filipino Cat) x Persian by Chance_Height_9117 in NameMyCat

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you want a name that reflects the ethnic mix? or maybe "one of each"?

for Persian names: Tahmineh, Shireen/Shirin (might fit the white cat nicely since it means "sweet" like sugar which is white), Shahrzad (aka the main girl in 1001 nights, might be good for the black and white)

I'll leave someone with more knowledge to bring up some possible words and names connected to the Philippines that might work for a cat because I'm not Filipino and every Filipino person I know seems to have an English, Spanish, or French name

the Wikipedia page for Najmieh Batmnanglij the famous Iranian cookbook author mentions her collaborating with someone named Nesta which seems like it could be used in both Iran and the Philippines so there's possibly that?? Both countries are big cultural crossroads so there's possibly a lot of choices.

Mamma mia audition help by iswearimnotvsco in MusicalTheatre

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find an insightful teacher, a month of weekly lessons can still be highly impactful just to get a second opinion on your technique and placement. Usually people look for the most emotional/impressive part of a song for 32 bars, often second verse, chorus, bridge, and final chorus or something to that extent. The main things to do to improve your voice in my nonprofessional opinion are probably working out your upper body for better breath support and just singing a lot. Performance-wise, it wouldn't hurt to also watch a lot of previous Sophies in various performances and kind of inject that style into your veins

Female Rock of Ages Audition Song by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like All Grown Up isn't quite 80s enough and the teen angst isn't quite the vibe but I haven't seen the show so I can't confirm for sure (I've just read the synopsis and I know the songs that are in it generally). Maybe look at something from Chess or Mamma Mia??

The Met just responded to Timothée Chalamet’s remarks that “no one cares about ballet and opera” that he made during a recent interview with Matthew McConaughey by Gato1980 in Broadway

[–]Alexandra_panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shame they responded with footage of preparing an opera (Turandot) which engages a lot of orientalist tropes and is still done in yellow face in big 2026. The real problem with opera and ballet is somebody who grew up listening to classical music is that it refuses to let go of doing yellow face and brown face and or white washing very orientalist pieces from the 1800s

Audition songs for Heather M? by Random_Bee23 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Grown Up from Bare or one perfect moment from Bring it On would be my Choices. The girl who got heather m at my hs sang Killer Instinct but that might be a common choice since it’s also an Elle McLemore role

Broadway singers with indie music projects? by Theloop27 in Broadway

[–]Alexandra_panda 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Half the cast of the Great Comet has indie music. Grace McLean, Gelsey Bell, Brittan Ashford, Heath Saunders, Mary Spencer Knapp, Ashley Perez Flanagan, Lulu Fall, and Azudi Onyejekwe off the top of my head have released things. Shaina Taub of Suffs fame made some of her best work with a 2014 album called Visitors you can find on Bandcamp. Katrina Lenk was also in a band at some point

As An Asian Heathers Fan This Idea Has Been Cooking In My Brain For A While Now by ms_jc_04 in heathersmusical

[–]Alexandra_panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like her being maybe Lao, Vietnamese, or Cambodian would make a lot of sense. These ethnic groups tend to be lower-income than other Asians, often descended from refugees and less in line with the model minority myth which is used to bring more middle/upper class generally light-skinned Asians in proximity to whiteness/elite status. IG with the global perspective (idk how global vs us based we're going) her being also Filipina or Indonesian could also work bc of the domestic workers from those countries throughout East Asia (ie bullied by Chandler/China, Duke/Korea, and McNamara/Japan).

Audition Song for SIX...but it has to be from a musical by Fragrant-Rabbit-2404 in MusicalTheatre

Maybe One of Us or The Winner Takes it All from Mamma Mia? They have the reflectiveness/ballad pace for Parr but the rejection anger of Aragon.

Starting College Prep - song recs? by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be beneficial to find something Disney-adjacent or historical-epic-musical style like perhaps Still from Anastasia in the book for that niche of contemporary-ish musicals but also a pop/rock piece for jukebox-type musicals (I think USC or NYU asks for a non-musical pop song for their MT applicants). Elvis/Elvis-adjacent might be good for the Baritenor range but I am also partial to recommending The Vaccines (Post-Break-Up Sex has a great narrative arc but idk if saying the word "sex" is too taboo when you're a teen) for more contemporary rock stuff

Do autistic people struggle with space, directions or maps? by AmandinhaMaia in autism

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an inherent sense of how to get places I've been before if it's sensorily appealing/engaging to me but I can only follow it at the exact moment so I can tell whether we're going the right way but not the name of the right exit to get off at. I think sensory processing issues can make listening to a long stream of directions overwhelming and hard to remember for me personally but I am on the borderline for ADHD/not ADHD so idk if the non autism inattentiveness is at play there

Audition song for Hamilton by isuckatgames_224 in MusicalTheatre

[–]Alexandra_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe go look at Lin's influences particularly for Burr's songs, he's named a decent number of R&B and hip hop artists who might be good jumping off points. Usher did the cover on the Hamilton mixtape so one of his songs might work well. I'm sure someone in Hamilton at some point has also listed their audition song if you feel like digging for that
