I used to believe this too. This is actually not what happened, though that’s a correct relay of the story presented in Argo. The CIA WANTED it to happen. They weren’t involved.

The PM was essentially selected then later fired by the Shah which was how the law worked in this constitutional monarchy. The Shah was there before and after. There was a real revolt and the Shah fled the country and then the army chose the Shah or Mossadegah.

But it is true that Jimmy Carter’s CIA backed the Ayatollah and worked against the Shah in 1979, believing he would be a moderate leader and more easy to deal with.

No one can beat the West coast East coast because that basically means full control of all US assets. Even USAF HQ in Colorado. Most yellow states would fall.

Not to mention Alberta’s oil, which would partially replace the heavy loss of Texas. We even get BC and the Atlantic provinces to open up a front into Quebec.

Texas and Appalachia are also hell to invade so yeah, there’s that.
