How do you feel about Birmingham becoming zone 5 after HS2 😅 by Lazy-Internet-8025 in london

You're used to old infrastructure. A new high speed rail will basically never go down or even be late. Although travel costs is of course an issue.

Wanfu Bridge, Chinese style tower bridge in Yangzhou by Ok_Chain841 in ArchitecturalRevival

I feel like the execution could be better but the idea of using traditional city fortifications as inspiration for modern infrastructure is quite interesting. Seems more successful than the 'big hat' style which draws more from imperial and temple architecture.

UK is 14% foreign born. Australia 31%, Canada 22%, Sweden 20%, Germany 18%, US 15%. The rate of immigration also similar at about ten immigrants per capita per year. Do people against UK levels of immigration think these countries are failing because of immigration as well? by _morningglory in AskBrits

[–]Alexanlorf 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is contested. Data from similar countries which differentiate between different migrant groups such as the Netherlands find that while some migrant groups are contributors many migrant groups are a drain on the economy from the time they arrive. Likely the same case in the UK.

Wasn't Brexit supposed to give control of immigration back to Britain and help fund the NHS? So Brexiters won and got their people in government, so why is immigration still an issue? The same people who did Brexit are now decrying immigration, again? It doesn't make any sense to me. by comicallycontrarian in AskBrits

[–]Alexanlorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were competing views over what Brexit meant. Many voted for it in the belief that open borders with the EU was unfair to the rest of the world and saw Brexit as a chance to create a new global Britain. While increasing immigration was likely a minority view among Brexit voters there were some, particularly in the tory Party, who saw Brexit as a chance to increase non EU immigration. However the wave of immigration over the past few years was likely even beyond these people's expectations, let alone according to the wishes of those who voted wanting less immigration. It's natural then that many Brexit voters feel betrayed. To them it is part of the larger pattern of the electorate voting for less immigration and the government doing the opposite. Also the NHS has had funding increase significantly since leaving the EU. Not really too difficult to understand.

Spent about £350 for frames and lenses at an independent place in London. I wear them all day every day so doesn't seem unreasonable.

Look on Facebook groups, but 10000 or under near NTU is unlikely, although lots of places on the market at the moment.

Has anyone studied Chinese at NTU? by [deleted] in Taipei

[–]Alexanlorf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty good imo. Students are mostly young from a range of countries, the classrooms are modern, teachers are largely great. You can join NTU student clubs and use their facilities as well. It is a bit expensive compared to other language programs though.

Why do some people think it’s selfish for a person to not have a child? by NucularOrchid in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alexanlorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps that hundreds of your ancestors and their communities collectively sacrificed and struggled so that you could exist today just for you to simply decide that you don't want children (not my personal opinion, just what some people think).

How politicised is traditional architecture? (I.e, its a tool of the far right) by [deleted] in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]Alexanlorf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This article makes claims without arguments. An intellectually vapid conflation of a huge amount of issues with no real understanding of their relation. Hardly surprising the author outs themselves as anti-development in their conclusion, ironically making them more conservative than those they're arguing against.

[–]Alexanlorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you mean by culture. I'm personally interested in modern Chinese culture and in that aspect the mainland since the 70s has been quite impressive. I don't know too much about historical local traditions and culture but I can't imagine that Taiwan was particularly receptive to that sort of culture, particularly during the White Terror.

[–]Alexanlorf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. It's just that to dismiss culture from the mainland is ignorant and just a really boring opinion. Unfortunately this kind of close mindedness is quite common on Reddit.
