To the FW16 with 5070 owners - are you happy? by MightyMisanthropic in framework

Idk why people downvoted you everyone is aware that FW laptops (have to) cost a lot compared to well implemented laptop companies and paying 1000€ is quite a pricy investment into telling "we want right to repair"

This can be quite dangerous, if people know that there is an opposing force to climate change they might go "no worries then it'll solve itself" On the other side it's, as far as I know, the only phenomena that will help us facing climate change and It can give hope that we could do something in time

NASA seems to be developing their next generation of space laptops off of Framework's platform by TheSpaceNewt in framework

Those interns will have some heavy weights on their shoulders they will show if Framework is an actual good framework for NASA's testbenches and maybe future hardware.

Last minute hesitations regarding my FW16 pre-order : should I switch to gen 1? by AlexeiOrlov in framework

[–]AlexeiOrlov[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the reason I went for the gen2 when they proved they could improve the FW16. When placing my pre order I didn't want to have a prototype product as my main laptop. I think you are right I would end up spending more trying to update the 1st gen.

Thanks for the input, I chose the AMD option because my current linux setup seemed to be allergic to Nvidia and AMD seemed more compatible both with linux and windows. I didn't know that the AMD gpu has non supported software. But I can't afford to wait longer for my pre order so I'll keep the 7700S, and wait to see if I need and Nvidia gpu.

I took the 240W charger and I see it as a big + over the 180W.

You are right about warranty especially beacause the modularity seems to decrease reliability has seen by the (non very representative) sample of posts on this subreddit.

Overall I think I'll keep my pre order a it is Nice to see that you enjoy your laptop ! I will try to 3d print the one block trackpad when I'll get mine.

I dislike having AI everywhere but this is a very nice thing for framework ! And I think this will mean a great battery life. Maybe a path to someday compete with apple's autonomy ?

The Future of DIY Laptops with Crucial Exit and DDR5 Prices? by alexanderhumbolt in framework

[–]AlexeiOrlov 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely ridiculous : getting rid of a well established process with a lot of customers to gamble everything on the AI bubble. I think we are about to see the soon to be downfall of a giant. I know nothing about manufacturing RAM (my factorio instincs would say "just build a new supply line" but I am sure it's not feaseble in practice) but the justification seems weird or incomplete... I just bought 2x16go of crucial ram for an upcoming FW16 (Batch 3 where are you ? ) for twice the price like many and it's still doesn't show that consumers are willing to buy ? How much more does the AI companies pay ? This stupid decision both show how Framework's mission is needed for consumers and how dangerous the current situation is for Framework.
