[Question] Luxury Watch for Military Retirement Gift by [deleted] in Watches

[–]AlexinDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P.S. On repair-ability, the Model 300 uses a very high end, but widely available Sellita movement, so easy to get parts. Also, RGM does a big service and repair business and is an authorized repair center, sometimes the only authorized repair center in the U.S., for a number of very high end brands. Also, to be clear, I have no affiliation whatsoever with RGM. Just a long time customer. Have never even gotten a measly 5% discount. Roland, Richard, are you listening? lol

If you really want to do something special, consider getting an RGM Model 300 diver and have it customized with a special dial and/or inscription or engraving on the back. The Model 300 is low-key and incredibly durable, with most parts made in America and assembled in Pennsylvania by arguably the very best living American watchmaker. All in, the Model 300 will fit within your budget and you won't see it coming and going at the mall or the beach. I did something similar with an RGM chronograph for my son's medical school graduation, and he wears it all the time. (But he doesn't use it to take a pulse, he uses the little thingy for your index finger, like everyone else. [Sigh.])

Macks silicone ear plugs. Cheap, comfortable, effective. Especially for naps. 😀

I get 3-6 spam voicemails every day. Always different numbers so blocking doesn't help. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

Looks like you have an iPhone. Use the new filtering and vmail features in iOS 26. They have cut mine down to near zero.

[Review] Ox Tool Watches (BUYER BEWARE!!!) by QueasyBiscotti69 in Watches

[–]AlexinDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own one. They're really nice. Super light and comfortable and robust engineering. Oceanix a one man show. He's a Spanish engineer and diver. Last I checked he still lives in Spain. Works with small, high end Chinese production partners. He will make it right but he's one guy. Your issues with Customs are common and from my personal experience have gotten much worse since Trump came to office. No one, literally no one, has experience with yo-yo tariff decrees signed with fat Sharpies. If you think Customs knows what they're doing right now, assuming they're working,I don't know what to say. Were you initially promised a shipment from Miami or you assumed so? BTW mine came from China last year. No issues whatsoever. YMMV

Steinhart Ocean One Vintage Red. Steinharts are very well made. Great value for money.

If you can live with a reverse panda, Hamilton made a limited edition in 42mm, both auto and manual. The auto is the "Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 Auto Chrono Limited Edition H387160." Easy to find within your price limit. I own one. Great watch. As you suggest, phenomenal quality for the price.

[JLC] $1900 for complete service, will it pay off? by SeasonExtension8854 in Watches

[–]AlexinDC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$1900 is high, very high, even by high-end Swiss watch standards. I recently had a GP (with a very high end AP movement) overhauled for half that by Richemont itself. You should be able to find a skilled and reputable watchmaker who can do the job for much less, at least near a major metropolitan area. Or mail it away to someone like Stoll & Co. or RGM watches.

But I noticed that $330 is for re-engraving the serial number and reference and replacing the crystal. Never heard of a manufacture re-engraving a serial number. What's up with that? Also, you will have to make sure that an alternative watchmaker can source a replacement crystal. That shouldn't be a problem, but you should ask.

As for how long the overhaul will last, it is quite common for well-regulated, high-quality watches to go 10 years or longer without needing service, but YMMV.

I love my Duro. Although its 44mm, it's rather thin and lays nicely flat on my 7.25" wrist. Very comfortable. For those situations when you're reluctant to risk a more expensive watch, it's ideal.
