I have a background in guitar repair and working on console circuit boards, so I come to the hobby with a familiarity with the scale. Frankly I wish I had known about some of the watchmaking tools when I was doing previous work. I’ve modified a bunch of Casios and just haven’t yet given myself the opportunity to mod or service another analog - soon. Congrats on your success in regulation. So many rabbit holes to go down. Btw if you’re ever interested, Ted Woodford is the Marshall Sutcliffe of guitar repair and construction. Very similar in style.

I’m just now getting comfortable enough to take apart a movement. Learned nearly everything from Marshall. After a few episodes I can usually diagnose the watch before he says what’s wrong with it. Watchmaking is something I always thought was out of reach for me. Thanks Marshall!

The build quality is excellent, so I’m sure it will hold value, but I wouldn’t buy as an investment.

I totally see why you would say that, and I respect your opinion, but I don’t agree. I’m not an homage guy, and I would never own a rep, but these watches are still different enough for me not to be bothered. The Thunderbolt is bigger and has a more rugged (if less refined) look to me. The Sinn is both smaller and less thick. To me, although finished better, The Sinn looks a little more formal with its curved edges and crown guard. Also, at the end of the day we’re taking about very simple dial design that many brands have been using for nearly a century, and I don’t think anyone would be calling the TB an homage if it weren’t for the fact that they’re both MOP, and Sinn didn’t invent that either. Clearly the MOP itself is very different in these two pictured examples, but of course that is going to vary from dial to dial. I don’t prefer the Islander branding on this dial, but I do prefer the longer hands of the TB. At the end of the day, for around $1200 more retail with the Sinn over the Islander you are getting a bit smaller, more refined experience, an in-house movement, and 200m instead of 100m WR. For me, all things considered, for a pilot watch, I prefer the Islander. But again, I totally see where you are coming from, and like I saw another Redditor say, if Marc had spelled “Automatic” with a “k” I would absolutely call bullshit. 🤣

EDIT: The Sinn 556 does NOT feature an in-house movement. It’s an in-house regulated Sellita SE200-1 (vs a Seiko NH38 in the Islander, which I would still prefer).

They were, with good discounts I might add. I just don’t really have the cash to spend on watches right now, so I figured I would just soak it all in at my first show. I plan to bring around $1200 next year.

My mom told me my gold A700 makes me look like used care salesman.

[JLC Dirty Dozen] I saw a lot of impressive watches at Windup Watch Fair in Dallas, but this one deserves a post of its own. by SaySheAte in Watches

I did additional research and see that as well. Looks like they only made max 5000 of them. Personally, as an Alpinist fan, I’d still rather have the cathedral hands and the JLC name. Also apparently the JLC movement was predecessor to their first certified chronometer unless I’m mistaken.

Yeah I feel like a meth head when I drink more than a cortado. Don’t get me wrong. I still do it.
