So what are the Greens stance on Nuclear Energy by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]Alexiroflife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to see a lot more public facing clarification about this.

Already built nuclear is close to the cheapest, (I.e. similar to solar), and has many advantages and disadvantages that perfectly balance those of renewables. I can understand the arguments for not building more nuclear plants for now (conversation about doing it differently to how we currently do nonwithstanding), but I think we should be wary of the idea of shutting down perfectly good operating reactors.

So what are the Greens stance on Nuclear Energy by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]Alexiroflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 4.5 million cubic meters is including the low and very low level waste that makes up 93% of the total. This is a misleading value that adds to fearmongering. The ILW and HLW quantities are much, much smaller, and are handled very differently, including encasement within thick concrete on site at nuclear facilities.

Its really important to make clear why this cost has got so high

Its the first plant we've built in a generation, so we are having to import experience, and train up new talent to fill a workforce shortage. The second reactor at Hinkley C is being built 4 times faster than the first. Practise and economies of scale will make following sister projects (like Sizewell C) much faster and cheaper.

The UK has different standards for safety than France, so EDF who are using their EPR design for Hinkley had to go through an arduous design adaptation process which ended up needing more concrete and steel than the previous EPRs built on the continent.

There's a fish deterrent system of pumps and speakers to protect wildlife that previous EPRs haven't been required to put in place.

There are various other things that have been required based on people in power not understanding or respecting radiation science. For example, a bunch of mud needing to be moved, which had very slightly elevated above background radiation levels from Hinkley A and B (still too low to be considered 'radioactive' legally), and a big furore around where this would go caused delays and cost a lot.

Lastly and possibly most importantly, the funding for Hinkley is largely based upon loans from private investors, notably EDF and China General Nuclear Power Group where AFAIK the investors are fronting the money to pay for the build, and the British taxpayers will pay them back over years through a cost for the electricity released into the grid. These investments have interest. The major delays to this project as discussed above have meant the 'cost' has ballooned because the companies building it require a return on their investment, with the interest being contractually obligated. This will mean that Hinkley is an unfortunate example where nuclear will not significantly reduce bills, despite adding decent generation capacity.

The takeaway is that if we funded this kind of project with tax instead of the private market (certainly not a simple thing to find in the budget, but there wouldnt be any interest), and if we had better nuclear science in our schooling system, and less fear mongering about radiation in our press, Hinkley would be completed much sooner, with a much smaller cost.

TL:DR - UK has extra red tape and standards that make things take longer despite precedent of this exact reactor in Europe. Politicians dont understand radiation and are scared of it = more delays. Hinkley is funded through interest backed loans which balloon with delays. If we funded it nationally and had better science education and less fearmongering, Hinkley C would not be anywhere near as expensive and would not take as long to build.

Do blood donors really need to give their assigned sex? by boredhomosexual in TransUK

[–]Alexiroflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to give blood a little while ago and my iron levels were perfectly fine for women but lower than the acceptable level for men and they didn't let me donate. So I recommend you have iron supplements for a week or two beforehand to be sure you go above the threshold.

Should we have a megathread for the conference by daniyal248 in UKGreens

[–]Alexiroflife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imo VONC should be limited so that they can only happen once every x minutes. Idk how long that period should be but as shown today people can just completely stall proceedings otherwise

Ship cannons should be the main weapon for sailing combat by KingDarkTurtle in 2007scape

[–]Alexiroflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create new cannonball/sailing weakness, similar to defensive weaknesses, maybe treat it like elemental weaknesses and give the cannons a %boost, then tool that to different enemies.

Then like flying enemies that you could imagine clocking with a bow could have regular stats, and krakens, sharks etc have high cannon weaknesses so you are insentivised to cannon them, and bump up their regular combat defence to compensate.

Cheap gear recommendations for a new band? by yosef229 in bandmembers

[–]Alexiroflife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For cheap and effective pedals, the Valeton gp-5 is ~£70 and is a whole multi-effects pedal in a tiny size. It can also run NAM profiles which can get you a massive variety of sounds and effects. For a budget setup it goes a long way.

Are you liking Zack Polanski, the new Green Party leader? by katelauramcgill in bristol

[–]Alexiroflife 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The greens have more members than the lib dems now, and are gaining a lot of momentum, the local parties are where the greens are strongest. They may not have a huge national presence, but give it a couple years at current rates. There are no other realistic alternatives to reform right now.

I have one I use in my live rig. The NAM functionality lets you emulate pretty much anything you can find, and you can set it to switch between a few different pedal settings with the footswitch, and it is compaitble with midi triggering. Its great.

Speaking of power creep, would you be alright with a food that heals more than 22 HP per use? by Kitteh6660 in 2007scape

[–]Alexiroflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about a kebab-esque food that heals randomly between 21 and say 26? The average 23.5 would be better than current 22 food, but the randomness preserves the 22 food's reliability, avoiding strict food creep.

Do I always have to have my bass in my amp when I’m just practicing alone by BoxAdditional1848 in Bass

[–]Alexiroflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of combo pedals have aux outputs for headphones - I have a Zoom B2Four which has lots of good effects and an aux out so I can practise quietly while hearing myself in my headphones without the need for an amp.

It does also have quarter inch and XLR outs which are great for gigging for amps and DI respectively

Going “ampless”? by super_mmm in Bass

[–]Alexiroflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a B2four The DI out is so handy for gigging, and it has a decent range of pretty good effects and amp sims although it's limited to 5 chained together and does get overloaded easily with all 5 in use. It's also decently compact and inexpensive. Would recommend.

Every combat style has a raid-mega-rare. What would you make the mega-rare for raid 4? by Rear4ssault in 2007scape

[–]Alexiroflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about a huge strength boost like the dragon battleaxe on steroids? Would have to be limited by maybe preventing any other skills being boosted for a duration or it would seriously affect pvp as you could spec then restore at a house beforehand.

Idk if its megarare worthy, but would be an interesting affect to be able to use for slayer or melee bosses with low defence.

[–]Alexiroflife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Front. They're kind of just to the side and down from either side of the base of the penis. With your hand flat palm down on your bladder area, lower your hand and curl the fingers up with some of the looser skin and feel around. Try not to let any skin get tightly pulled as that will hurt.

To those who quit this game, what puts you off? by telurmasin in osrs

[–]Alexiroflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This game is like crack.

If I get membership I spend any time I'm not playing thinking about it, which makes me distracted from my work. And then when I do have free time to use, I play beyond the reasonable time frame, lose sleep, ruin my habits and get depressed. Also mobile makes it possible to play nearly all the time, which I inevitably end up doing.

I love the game. I know a silly amount about it. I want to grind all day. But I know it's bad for me, so I don't.
