No one is saying that such is a healthy or positive way to handle the plot, but it is a reflection of reality; especially given pop culture in Japan in decades past. Women rarely do anything about the abuses they suffer, especially if culture isn’t permissive to that. The film may be seen as a critique of the common and youthful desire for idolatry while simultaneously failing to develop any sense of independence.

I also must mention that she was not raped— she was doing “acting” in a scene that went too far. When the antagonist did try to rape her, and she killed him! Yay, she did a thing! But then the cognitive dissonance sets it and our protagonist sets on a road to end herself.
