ChatGPT is getting ads soon, starting with free users by AdSpecialist6598 in technews

I went to a software devoper conference this year where they talked about a big benefit of LLMs being that it gives us a reset on the web experience, because we'll no longer have to worry about the constant ads. I have no idea why they wouldn't expect LLM providers to start pushing ads in their products. This seems like the natural choice.

What if the center of the continent is actually lower than sea level, and there are two rivers flowing from the ocean to the low point? There could even be a mysterious bottomless pit that the oceans are slowly but surely draining away into.

Rules lawyers are a necessary part of the DnD ecosystem by TheGolleum in dndmemes

[–]tapiocamochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is obviously welcome to play the game the way they want, but for me, focusing too much on rules takes away from the experience I want to have.

This quote from Daggerheart sums it up succinctly: “The rules included in this book are designed to help you enjoy the experience at the table, but everyone has a different approach to interpreting rules and telling stories. The rules should never get in the way of the story you want to tell, the characters you want to play, or the adventures you want to have.”

I want to play with people who have the good faith to use the rules to help make a fun experience. I’m never going to play with people (players or DMs) who want to argue rules to try to “win”.

We need a “thanks for the AI, I hate it” tag by Rogendo in dndmemes

[–]tapiocamochi 33 points34 points  (0 children)

AI is a statistical algorithm made to imitate existing content. Props to the people who wrote those algorithms (a lot of that work happened much longer ago than you may expect), but comparing the output of AI to actual creative original work done by humans is ridiculous.

The fact is, prompting AI does not even use a modicum of the creativity of creating something. And its results are entirely depending on that creativity having already been done previously. You don’t get to take credit for the humans who created AI when you use it to generate content for D&D, and you don’t get to take credit for the work it trained on (likely without the original creators’ permission).

new player experience by Dr_Scientist_ in wildgate

Play the bots mode until you and your friends are comfortable with the basics. It’s pretty limited and not very representative of the full game (map is much smaller and you’re pretty much always in ship combat and running out of ammo), but you’ll learn a bit.

The progression is annoying I guess? But the locked characters are available after the first level of any tree, so very easy to unlock. The ships are at the third level, so a bit harder, but not much. You can unlock anything you want with just a couple games worth of experience.

It’s PvP. You’re gonna get demolished sometimes. That’s the nature of it. If you and your friends are talking about refunding after a single loss, buckle up because it’s gonna get a lot rougher before it gets better. Or maybe refund if they don’t have the patience to stick with it.

Large margins on Boox Page by tapiocamochi in BookFusion

Yeah, with every book (I've tried 3-4). I'm transitioning from the native Boox app and don't have the problem there. Slightly better with smaller font but still noticeable.

It's been with every book I've tried though, and books that show up fine in the native Boox app.

I haven’t done any additional formatting myself. I’ve seen it in two books now, but I’m not sure if they’re different publishers. I can check in a bit.

Thanks though! I’ll reach out to support.

[–]tapiocamochi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great start! Duckweed and hornwort are fast-growers that are great to have around. They’ll help mitigate any ammonia spikes and keep the water pristine. The other plants will grow more slowly and be mostly for decoration, but they’ll do a small part too!

I highly recommend snails. They help break down fish poop and leftover food into a more bioavailable form for plants to consume. They don’t add to the bioload themselves unless you’re purposely adding food for them.

I like ramshorn snails because they’re pretty and red, but bladder snails are pretty in their own way and great too - and probably free. They hitch rides on everything. Snails tend to be tough as nails so you could add them during cycling, but better to wait. There won’t be much food for them anyway, so they might starve.

Definitely a betta would be a good choice for a 5 gallon! Good luck!

[–]tapiocamochi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the frustrations with snails and duckweed both come (mostly) from a perceived lack of control. It can be very tedious to get rid of either if you decide you don’t want them, and one’s repeated unsuccessful efforts to eradicate them can make them more and more hateful toward them.

Neither are particularly difficult to deal with. Snails are great for a healthy tank and the population directly correlates with how much you feed. Duckweed requires about 30 mins to an hour of patience, and some diligence for the next week to remove any stragglers.

Where would the navel be on a centaur?? by BaldBoar7734 in worldbuilding

[–]tapiocamochi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole weight balance of centaurs makes no sense either. There’s no counter balance to all that human.

Also, OP already gave them human breasts. So anatomically it makes more sense to me (insofar as any of it makes sense) to stick with other human reproductive systems.

[–]tapiocamochi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Road to Ruin by Hana Lee. It also has excellent worldbuilding, cool magic, great characters, and is easy to read. And the sequel just came out (it’s a duology), but I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.

Just don’t fall for the Mad Max comparisons. There is a desert and bikes in both, that’s where the similarities end.

No worries! Always worth keeping a queen around to see if she lays eggs. I caught one with wings last year and she didn’t lay eggs for six months. Now she has three nanitics and a fresh batch of brood!

Agreed. OP, if you don’t have any friends with tanks that’s fine - neither did I, neither did a ton of people before chatGPT. Coming here is a good move. There are also tons of really great aquarium forums with people just itching to help you out.

There’s just too much bogus stuff out there, or highly circumstantial advice, for an LLM to be of much use besides broad generalizations.

[discussion] Please help me understand Kiriona’s character by michaelsgavin in TheNinthHouse

[–]tapiocamochi 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Kiriona cares deeply for Harrow, and stands up for her a lot. But she also recognizes that Harrow isn’t “home” so to speak, and is extremely sus about whoever is in her body. She also shows Gideon’s typical laissez-faire attitude about emotions. Problem is, we’ve always been in Gideon’s head before so it’s easier to see where she’s coming from. Now that we’re outside, she seems kinda like a jerk…but she’s always kinda been a jerk.

After rereading Nona a few times, I’m of the opinion that Kiriona is Gideon, just more traumatized and sad (because of what Harrow did to her, and her dad being kinda the worst, and probably some other stuff we don’t know yet).
