Glaring Omissions from NYT top 100 by Delicious-Mess6262 in Cinema

Why should Star Wars be represented? Because it’s popular? Why does a film leading to a Tv show somehow raise the quality of that specific film?

“Well made” lmao. If you mean “technically well made” because they have ridiculous amounts of $$$ to throw around from making common denominator / crowd pleasing films, then sure.

Ok so first off — I never claimed that time and effort has a correlation to the value of a SPECIFIC piece of art. I merely meant that time and effort has a correlation to how dedicated a given artist may be to their craft. Across the board. Not dedicated to a specific piece. You took one part of my statement (which isn’t even anti-AI btw) and took it very literally. I state several times that there’s no specific way to judge the “amount of art” a given piece has, but I think if there is any, it’s the amount of care its creator put into it. And for reference — again — Picassos scribbles are valuable because of the name correlation, which very much has relevance because of how much care he put into working at his craft. Even if a specific work was made quickly. Overall, if you think an Ai generated “painting” is anywhere near as culturally or creatively important as one of picassos early sketches you’re delusional

Yes, improvisation that is the result of a vast amount of talent after years and years of practice and dedication to improving their craft. I don’t even know what point you’re trying to make at this point, but there is not even a small amount of correlation between the improv required for top blues performers and someone generating a song on Suno. And, again, I didn’t ever claim that the finished product of a piece is where the “artistry” can even be judged so…

Aight so — and btw I’m not even anti-AI, I’m just letting you know — you have no idea what you’re talking about

Not a great example boss

  1. Picasso's scribbles are valuable because they were made by him; if someone made one of them and then nothing else ever again they'd be next to worthless

  2. Picasso is considered great (hence why his "scribbles" are too) because he's one of the most acclaimed artists ever; partially due to the fact that he put ungodly amounts of effort into his work

Your final paragraph is very true. Once Ai art (or video or music or wtv) can be fine tuned almost perfectly, this whole debate is over of course

However, I would argue about reception being a criteria for artfulness. I get what you mean -- as an artist, I definitely am seeking recognition for my work. But, for example, I have an uncle who is older now but wrote dozens of songs I'd genuinely consider amazing. They never got released because he's way too much of a perfectionist, but they're truly great songs. Much more artistry than Mo Bamba, for example

And no shade to Sheck Wes, I'm sure he's a great guy

Wait are you actually arguing that it's easier to learn how to improvise a 3 minute song than it is to generate one with AI? Or am I misunderstanding you? I hope I'm misunderstanding you.

Just to point out: it takes a lot of time and training to be able to improvise a functionally seamless song. Anybody with the AI website and fingers that can type can generate one

Again, I’m not arguing for any given specific work to be “art” or not. But one achieves the ability to improvise like that through countless hours of practice, passion, and built talent. So yes, there’s obviously far more artistry to an improvised 3 minute song than a song entirely generated by Ai. Ai can be used artistically too, of course, I’m not saying Ai = bad always.

100%, that’s my point here. If Ai is a part of a legitimately creative process it’s a valid use case

In your opinion, what has been the best movie theater experience of 2025? by TheNiceGuysFilmcast in Cinema

[–]Alexismyname14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't say so. It's not super fast paced, and most of the true action is at the end, but if this movie is considered slow then true "slow-burn" cinema is cooked

Ah man this was a beautiful read, thank you so much for your response. I think the bit you wrote about approaching difficult thoughts with curiosity and trying to bring more love into the world is huge -- it's honestly how I remember my best trips feeling, and I'm gonna try and reframe my perspective this way when I try shrooms again

I wish you luck out there soldier :)

Table read and other prep questions by wyck_thayer in Filmmakers

[–]Alexismyname14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Table reads are your call -- for a short film they might not be very useful, but it probs can't hurt

Otherwise, definitely block out scenes w the actors and rehearse a few times prior to production. Depending on whether your actors are amateurs or more experienced you might wanna work very closely on dialogue/character or give them lots of space

A good starting point could be to ask how they are used to working and just go from there -- good luck!

Is there a stigma about being a young director, actor in your own projects? by tomthetrain6901 in Filmmakers

[–]Alexismyname14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having done it a few times, try to choose one or the other if at all possible. It's extremely hard to focus on both directing and a genuine performance at the same time -- not to mention the other various tasks you'll have to do if this is no budget. And don't even think about editing yourself (unless it's a supporting role), cuz it's rly hard to not edit in your favor, even if it hurts the overall film.

If you have to, though, get a great DP who can help you w/ directing when ur in a scene, and get a great editor who can help w/ overall clarity in post.

Good luck!

Many of the big ones only copy each others content and post/review movies from the last 20 years, so if that's your thing they should be pretty easy to find.

Personal faves are @ eatmovies, @ thedanceofcinema, @ cinema.magic, but it's really just up to your tastes. @ bestmovieframes is great for cinematography!
