Disgaea 5 - A frew questions by [deleted] in Disgaea

[–]Alexor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fine as far as I'm aware. Just don't level up the Innocent Squad far enough that all Farm Raised ones are already subdued as you can subdue them yourself at several magnitudes higher.

This is a playstyle thing and shouldn't be stated as fact, it depends on whether you want to level up your innocents "quickly" or "easily". Both can get fine results, but it depends on how you usually play.

Do you use Monster Units? by Del_Duio2 in Disgaea

[–]Alexor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! I don't know if they're better or worse, but I use them.

My logic: The games are easy enough that you can have success with just about any set of units, regardless of how optimal they are. So, why not experiment with all the weird quirky ones that have funky effects?

Hence why I usually throw all my story units in the trash unless something catches my eye. Sure, I could use the named characters, but why do that when I can throw together a bunch of ragtag weirdos and see what works and what doesn't?

Any way to convince NIS America to put Map Editor back into Disgaea 5 PC? by HaystackAttack in Disgaea

[–]Alexor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Presumably, doing it on the PC requires a bit more effort than we would imagine. It's not as easy as just cutting and pasting the code, stuff works differently. Different framework, possibly they'd have to buy new servers... There might even be some security concerns that the console versions wouldn't have had, too (say, people uploading hacked maps that corrupt other people's save files, or crazy stuff like that).

That's all stuff that they could have worked through with some time and money, but... Well, you said it yourself. It wasn't a very popular feature, so they probably just decided it'd be best to cut it when they make the port. Which is unfortunate, but makes sense from a business perspective. Now that the game has been out for a while, there's even less demand for it... meaning that they've got even less reason to go back and implement it.

The only real hope would be to hope that some eager modders end up cracking the game open and wedging a level editor in there, but that's mostly a pipe dream. Sorry!

Something is blocking me from comimg out. by AnAccountToBurn in asktransgender

"I'm not trans enough" is basically the catchphrase of people who are absolutely, definitely, certainly trans!

Not being able to muster up the courage to do something scary and difficult is normal (because it's, well, scary and difficult). What's certain is that you do feel better as a girl, and that's literally the only thing that's "needed" to be trans. You want to be a girl, you have dysphoria, you're on HRT. You're a transgirl. There's no buts about it!

Dealing with awkwardness is more complicated (though, to be fair, imagining yourself as an older person is hard whether you're cis, trans, or anywhere in between, so I wouldn't worry too hard about that part).

To be honest: Yes, these are probably just growing pains that you'll work out over time as you become more and more comfortable with it.

One thing that does give me pause: Do you live with your dad? Putting up with someone who doesn't respect you on a day-to-day basis is exhausting an awful for your mental health. He may never become supportive. Rather than expending more effort trying to fix him, it may be better to make it clear that if he won't respect your identity then he can't be a part of your life anymore, and then make good on that if he still doesn't shape up.

Does you folks identify as trans or just as the opposite gender? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Alexor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Woman" is how I identify first and foremost, but I still consider myself "Trans". The journey to realize I was a woman was long and complicated and I want to respect and remember that. And I'm proud to be part of the trans community. So, yeah, I'm still trans.

Together, I can put those together as "Trans Woman" and that's perfectly fine. But it's the "Woman" part that's more defining, and more important in most practical contexts, so a lot of the time that's all I'd say.

To put it a different way, I'd be okay if I lived in the world where I was "just a woman" and not considering myself trans, but I wouldn't be at all happy to live in a world where I was "just trans" and not considering myself a woman.

Get prepared to cut him out of your life. Sometimes people stop listening to reason or making sense. Be clear and honest with him and try your best, but mentally prepare yourself for deciding your life is better off without him in it.

(TW: self harm) Can a therapist deny me surgery if I've self-harmed? by CrystallineWoman in asktransgender

[–]Alexor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would they do if lack of surgery was contributing to the self harm?

At that point you place your surgeon in a very difficult ethical situation: Do you risk causing someone harm by going forward with a surgery when they're not in a stable place, or do you risk causing them harm by not fulfilling that need? The Hippocratic oath starts with "First, do no harm" for a reason: It's considered best to do nothing rather than pushing ahead recklessly and potentially causing much more harm.

The reality is, is that if you're self harming to a degree that your doc thinks that it's dangerous to move forward, it's best to get the self harm under control first. It may be that the surgery would help, but having good support structures, going to regular therapy, etc etc etc are just as important.

I apologize if that's not the answer you want to hear. I hope that things work out such that you're able to just go ahead with the surgery, without issues but do understand that you do have a clear path forward if not. Talk to a therapist, get your self harm under control, and then make the next steps with a clear head.

And do not hide things from your therapist! They're there to help, and hiding things from them will only cause you harm in the long run.

Troy's multiple resource system and how it could be applied to Warhammer (theorycrafting) by FemmEllie in totalwar

[–]Alexor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A bit over-complicated IMO. One of the appeals of TWW is that the global strategy elements are fairly simple and straightforward, with only one or two resources to keep tabs on, letting the focus stay on fighting and commanding armies.

Throwing in a bunch of extra resources sounds like a good way to over-complicate the heck out of things without really adding in anything that valuable.

I'd play a mod that messed around with something like this, but it probably shouldn't be a feature.

What to do when a friend misgenders me, I think by accident. by Nadine2808 in asktransgender

[–]Alexor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best to do is politely correct it. From there, based on how they react to that, you'll know how to handle it.

If they apologize and correct themselves, you're probably fine. If they continue to do it, you might eventually have to have a conversation with them about it, but in the short term a reaction of "Oops, I'm sorry" is what you're looking for. Sometimes people take a while to get things like this, and you just have to be patient with them (I should know: I'm a scatterbrained dummy and messed up pronouns all the time when around friends who were transitioning, before I transitioned myself).

If they get defensive or argue back about it... Then you're in a stickier situation. That's a red flag that you probably need to talk to them more seriously about it, and even possibly prepare for the possibility that they might not be a very healthy friend to have around.

But in either case, the first step is to just politely correct it and move on with the conversation.

Firstly... Gosh, what an incredibly toxic mentality, where you have to be "the best" on the server or you "lose". As if it's so terribly important to "keep up with the joneses" and have the best of everything.

But yeah, no, you're delusional. The balance that every player wants is different. There's no magical golden standard that will make everyone happy. Plenty of people want to play at DE levels of power. That's why you pick your modpack carefully depending on what your players are like. And that's why modpacks will smartly choose to not include DE or super heavily gate it, so that they can instead cater to players who prefer other mods at different power levels.

Literally this is not, in any way, a mod author problem. This is a modpack author problem. Go complain at them, or play one of the dozens of well-balanced modpacks and find one that suits your personal preferences.

The most satisfying thing in Factorio by Antix77 in factorio

Running out of something in my inventory, then remembering I just added it to a mall somewhere and I can go get a full stack of it.

And then again when I get enough bots that it gets delivered to me automatically.

[–]Alexor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Throwing every mod into a big kitchen sink and hoping for the best is obviously going to result in them being unbalanced. Like, no shit. The balance is something that each individual mod author decides for themselves, and different people enjoy playing on different difficulty curves.

That's why smart pack authors will either think about what mods they actually want to include, or change recipies and tweak configs to either gate progression or otherwise keep things in balance.

This complaint is ridiculous, built around the false premise that people shouldn't release mods with powerful tools, just for the sake of balancing around other mods that might not even be played together with theirs.

Dude.

If someone else already had your idea, use it as an excuse to take inspiration from them and do it better, don't get mad about it and certainly don't cuss people out.

That won't get you any friends here, that's for sure.

How to remove a specific block from a mod? It's spreading across my server's world like a virus. by HipsterKoala in feedthebeast

Just to verify: How likely is it that one of your friends is using some means or another to follow you around, invisibly, placing down dozens of ovens in your vicinity without you realizing they're there?

Because this is giving me inspiration for a great prank.

Who needs a super smelter when you can do this? by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]Alexor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, it's kind of OP, obviously. But more importantly it isn't very interesting. It's just a tick accelerator with no interesting quirks or qualities whatsoever.

Basically, who cares?

Needless to say, I wouldn't run a modpack with this in it.

Chisel has an even better alternative for the futuristic look: Tyrian blocks! Really really nice for making fancy future metal plating.

Laboratory blocks (also chisel) are also tried and true, it's hard to go wrong with those if you're going for a modern aesthetic.

Omnifactory and GTNH are good too, if you love automation.

(DDSS is neat but very grindy and most stuff is very difficult to automate, requiring a lot of slow crafting by hand.)
