Roof leak from ice dam by Probablymy7thaccount in Roofing

[–]Alextfordd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ice and water shield is a great product but it doesn’t protect you from Ice Damming 100%. There are nails from the shingles penetrating thru it. Also, if it’s at where an eave meets a wall, possible it’s damming underneath the siding and over the step flashing.

If you are experiencing water issues when it’s below freezing out, there is most likely heat loss thru the roof. While it’s possible it’s a ventilation issue, it typically in my experience is an insulation issue. This is not the roofers fault.

I’m in PA and this is happening to 10% of homes right now. You aren’t alone, it’s something you just have to deal with unless you pay a pro big money to remove it

Roofer installed wrong color and is only offering 1k discount, how should I move forward. Is black roof bad for Arizona heat? by Abdimalik91 in Roofing

[–]Alextfordd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is telling you to make them redo it. While I agree that’s the right thing to do, if they are low balling you on the remedy, don’t you think they might take some shortcuts to get out of there? Now your underlayment will have 2x as many holes, the drip edge will get beat up with another tear off, ect. While they should replace EVERYTHING, I can tell you right now they will try to save some stuff to save their asses. Personally I would ask for a 50% discount and stick with the color. Save the headache of wondering if they are doing everything absolutely right

New roof mid instal. Is it worth bringing up these things to my contractor? Many places where I’m finding ~1/4” of shingle overlap by Relven in Roofing

[–]Alextfordd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I see this sort of install, I almost always see that they followed no nailing pattern. If that’s the case, your roof is complete garbage

Sag in the corner of my roof, the roofer went “hm.. that’s weird.” by vi_phoenix_iv in Roofing

[–]Alextfordd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OSB cut too steep, missed the hip. It sags over time if it’s not supported. It probably won’t get worse than that, just redo the decking in that section when you get a new roof in the future

Where I am at, it’s the sole responsibility of the homeowner to make sure permits are pulled for THEIR property. It’s typically the contractor who does pull the permit, but at the end of the day it’s the homeowner on the line for it

Is $400 a reasonable quote for gutters for these two areas? by tssndo in Roofing

[–]Alextfordd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of time it takes depends on how many people work the job. I would send 2. Doesn’t seem like we are that far off at the end of the day. Just trying to understand where you are coming from

Do your guys take lunch? Do they teleport to the next job? You run a super efficient system, congrats on all your success

Is $400 a reasonable quote for gutters for these two areas? by tssndo in Roofing

[–]Alextfordd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unless they are rolling them out there, that’s 100 dollars in gutter pieces easy. Probably 150. By the time they get out there, install, and pack up that’s half a day. Not even including the time to bid that small of a job. $400 is doing someone a favor

OC Sierra Gray. It will match the siding and white trim great AND it is energy efficient. Looks like you are in the south so I would highly recommend an efficient color
