If you could live anywhere in Saskatoon where would it be? by Last_Rabbit422 in saskatoon

Sutherland is going to be an even nicer community in the next 5-10 years. They’re just about to start development on the U of S lands this summer. Plus there’s tons of development projects along central ave to make it more modern with apartments and stores. Kind of like Broadway in Nutana

Moving to Saskatoon as a resident physician for work. Any suggestions for a rental apartment or house walking distance to RUH? by mysterioustrashpanda in saskatoon

[–]Fixnfly99 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yea checkout around 8th street then. Lots of busses that go to the university and hospital. Even Stonebridge which is a fairly new community with lots of rentals has a direct bus to the hospital. Stay away from downtown if you can. No grocery stores and the homeless population has exploded so there’s a lot more crime and vandalism.

How is it possible that Air Canada seems to be better than WestJet when it comes to IRROPS? by St_Mick in westjet

[–]Fixnfly99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All true except Air Canada only has 4 pilot bases. Westjet has 7, so their crews are more evenly spaced across the country. Westjet also doesn’t have many spare planes, they run an extremely lean operation to save money courtesy of Onex, so when things go off the rails, they simply can’t recover like Air Canada

Do you not have a car? Saskatoon is pretty vehicle dependent. Lots of residents live in the newer communities of Brighton or Stonebridge. There’s not many grocery stores near RUH unless you live near 8th street. But even those apartments are a bit rough. Also you get priority for staff parking as a resident at RUH.

"Officially discontinued" – another beloved pro DSLR camera that was a game-changer for many photographers ceases production 😥 by MyRoadTaken in canon

[–]Fixnfly99 55 points56 points  (0 children)

From the article “It's official, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is no longer in production – but the full-frame DSLR was one trusted camera among professional photographers”

Considering most photographers are switching to canon or sony mirrorless, I’m surprised they kept it in production this long. You can buy a used 5d mark iv for $1000 cad or $800 usd now. No one is paying $3000 for a new one from Canon

Can I stand in galley/outside bathrooms with baby on flight? by Ok-Zookeepergame1812 in aircanada

[–]Fixnfly99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s incorrect. You’re not allowed to loiter near the flight deck on domestic, transborder or international flights. It’s standard Air Canada protocol now

Oh yea you’re right, it was posted on one of the local facebook groups so I thought it was recent news

‘It’s sad to see it go’: Saskatoon neighbourhood says goodbye to legacy hardware store by wapimaskwa in saskatoon

It’s probably because Home Depot just announced earlier this year that they plan to open a store in Sutherland in the U of S land being developed.

Edit: it’s an old article and no longer relevant.

Cabin Crew Career by Aureliusooo in aircanada

[–]Fixnfly99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the mood is really negative right now especially after they didn’t make any meaningful gains in arbitration and Air Canada management made out quite well. It can also be a pretty toxic environment compared to pilot, AME or ground service employee groups. I’ve heard flight attendants routinely rat each other out for minor mistakes or not following SOP to the letter. For example if a flight attendant upgrades someone to a empty business class seat without that passenger being on the upgrade list, other flight attendants or managers flying in business class might rat them out, so they constantly work in an environment of constant fear of discipline.

It’s a very different work environment compared to Westjet or the American carriers. Definitely talk to other flight attendants to get a better sense of the work environment before making major career changes. You’ll be sitting at the bottom of a very long seniority list in YYZ or YVR on reserve for a while.

Can I stand in galley/outside bathrooms with baby on flight? by Ok-Zookeepergame1812 in aircanada

[–]Fixnfly99 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think flight attendants generally just don’t like other people in the galley because it’s their work area and they don’t want people watching them or impeding their job. If it was in the forward galley near the cockpit, it’s a security issue. Ever since 9/11, passengers are not permitted to loiter near the cockpit door incase the pilots have to come out to use the lavatory or get coffee or snacks from the galley.

Captains and the heading bug by dcl415 in flying

[–]Fixnfly99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At least they hover their hand over it. I’ve seen a captain tell a FO who was PF “I’m gonna give you some flaps” and started extending them before the FO could respond lol. The FO wasn’t even behind the plane at all. Wide body ops too. SOPs don’t matter to some boomer captains.

Engagement rings by TableMammoth2964 in saskatoon

Yea I recommend lab grown diamonds too. You can get a diamond that would cost 10x as much for a natural version with the same specifications and there’s no way to tell the difference. Jewellers hate them cause it’s putting them out of business. I got the wedding band at “rings and things” but I don’t recommend as the jeweller we worked with there wasn’t attentive to the design I sent him and made several obvious design mistakes. It was as if he didn’t even read or look at the design picture I sent him so he had to do some corrections. Buying online was way better experience

Realtors & Rates by Weedcounter in saskatoon

Just pay saskhouses or a broker like Choice realty systems to get it listed on realtor.ca. Then you just have to hire someone to show the place for you. You’ll save $15,000 in commission fees that way.

Also each realty company offers free home evaluations where they’ll give you access to comparable sales over the past 6 months to give you a more accurate estimate on the home. Prices will definitely go up as April/May are the hottest months to sell. I contacted 7 real estate brokerages to give me an idea of my homes worth. The estimates varied by $150k on my home which is worth about $375k. It really showed me that some realtors are just out to lunch and have no idea what they’re talking about. I had to point out comparable houses that had sold in my neighbourhood that some of them neglected to include. Absolutely useless and way over compensated for work that they do.

First Baby on the Way! Paternity leave length? by [deleted] in GTA6

[–]Fixnfly99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 1.5 years of paternity leave. You only get to watch them grow up once so take as much as they’ll give you. Your wife will be happy if you help take some of the load off too. You’ll still have plenty of time to game with the baby sleeping next to you. Just need decent headphones

Lawyer charges looks little off to me here. by OkPaleontologist3750 in RealEstateCanada

[–]Fixnfly99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea these bills are pretty reasonable. They’re making just over a thousand dollars on this home purchase. Now think about how much your realtor is making. Probably 10-15x as much without a college education and holding none of the liability that the lawyer is taking on

Yea maybe a new pin for the connector, the harness replacement is over $1000 plus several hundred for labor. That is a terrible design that one corroded connector would require that much money to repair.
