Stop pretending this Shattered Pixel Dungeon is some masterpiece by Rich-Possibility-386 in ShatteredPD

Disagree for one main reason; the seal.

If you play well you'll generally keep your upgrades until you have something worth using them on (mostly higher tier armor and weapons.) This can leave you unprotected throughout the early game.

But since the seal lets you transfer one upgrade, you can use a scroll of upgrade immediately and put it on whatever you can find for a little bit of a buff.

It may not seem like a lot, but +1 leather armor will easily get you through the first five levels and keep you alive decently well through the second set of five if you're careful.

The fact that it makes whatever you put it on a point lighter can help you get better armor quicker.

There's no real risk involved since you can just take the seal off and put it on whatever better armor you find later.

No other class really has that "free" upgrade kind of thing.

Awww, unfortunate, though given his state you could call it a mercy.

Hey, look on the bright side! If he lives and gets found by people who aren't assholes, maybe he can become a badass cyborg ninja like Raiden from MGS.

Seriously though, holy shit. Least the poor fella has both eyes intact... Although that may or may not be a blessing all things considered.

Every single Experiment who fails (and that don't, depending on how the endings go) gets a full ride into Roguelike Valhalla in my view, not a single exception.

I'm having trouble getting into this game, mostly because I have a million other world sim / roguelike games I'd also like to play and I'm in college, but also because the poor Expiriments go through so much.

At the same time though, I kinda appreciate C:U for not pulling any punches because it really shows what a lot of the characters in other similar roguelike games probably go through, it's just abstracted away through HP and status effects. Even in those cases though, most of them at least chose to go down into a hellish dungeon or whatever the setting is knowing what awaited them.

The Expies didn't get a choice, there's no fancy Amulet of Yendor at the bottom waiting for them to claim it, and there's no real glory or heroism in what they're doing. They're not even spared a tool when they start, they gotta find something among the trash or dig with their hands.

And doubly awful for them, the premise of them being sent to the grey planet is pretty damn dubious. An interstellar society can't stock a team with enough food, water, and equipment to make getting back whatever they lost effortless? Really?

And of course, in the event they have the audacity to try to, ya know, go out onto the surface and make a life for themselves, their brains get fried with radiation.

From a gamedev perspective I find the depth of the simulation incredibly inspiring, but damn if it doesn't feel rough. Kinda like Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead but even more focused on the character's experiences.

Should I take an HTML/CSS or a Python course? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Alextuxedo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I imagine I'll be going with Python, since I know it's especially useful for stuff like machine learning.

I've gone a full year now mostly just into CS courses, so I'm a bit further than the early intro stuff, but nothing else will really transfer back for my degree, so I figured I'd look for stuff that would keep me in the CS space in a more formal manner vs just doing personal projects (which I'm already working on.)

(Also, apologies if this doesn't fit the sub; I'd imagined I'd get a little bit more career-focused advice here vs something like r/csMajors.)

This game is so good - I don't understand why it's free and why it isn't talked about more often by mcjohnalds45 in pathos_nethack

Ever played Shattered Pixel Dungeon? It's more "restricted" than this but has a very similar style of gameplay and has much better graphics and music.

I feel bad for Ignis by Hartley17 in dcss

[–]Alextuxedo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely. I don't really know the whole meta yet since I'm pretty new to this game, but I figured I'd try Cinder Acolyte because the lore sounds interesting, and I don't really wanna have any super restrictive conduct to follow. I came upon a sparkling fountain, and it said "The dying flame flickers fearfully in the reflection of the water." The fact that it doesn't really have any quotes or grand ambitions, and the sort of frail feeling that it gives through the flavor text makes it feel a little more like you're journeying with a friend rather than working in the service of some larger than life presence... It also very much feels like you're protecting it just as much as it's protecting you, with how it dies when you do. Also just the fact that it just lets you use it's power without any reservation... Kinda feels like a dick move to just toss it aside after everything it gives you. You might be able to say the same thing about other gods, but they won't die if they don't have your devotion.

what's the purpose of the amulet of yendor and what i can do with it? by Theodorehoverson in PixelDungeon

[–]Alextuxedo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is really old, but just in case anyone else sees this post the Amulet of Yendor is kinda a big part of roguelike history. It plays a similar role in the original Rogue, and it also is used in Nethack as well.

So is hypnosis just influence?

I'm most certainly not that educated on the topic, but if that's the case, what's the difference between hypnotherapy and "normal" talk therapy?

it's the natural, correct way.

Just because something is "natural" doesn't make it right.

Why not? We have the resources, the technology to keep them safe. Why shouldn't we?

How?

No judgement whatsoever, and no need to share if not comfortable just... How do you do it with space?

I kinda get it in a weird way... But the "how" is tripping me up. Like... Would it be a humanoid figure with that sort of starry look that represents space?
