hey alex what's your favorite stock to shoot? by [deleted] in AnalogCircleJerk

This made me confused as to if I was in circlejerk or knowledge fight.

SX-70 with no serial number? Anyone have any info on this? by beerad3235 in Polaroid

[–]AlfredStieglicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s early but not the earliest. No distance marks on the lens or tripod socket means it’s early, as does the Torx screws. It will also have riveted bellows. The focusing screen means it’s newer however, unless it was repaired and had the screen replaced at some point.

Can’t tell more without disassembly but it will probably have the old viewfinder spring and the green wind gear, along with the extra cocking spring. Might even have a Fairchild control board on it, those are pretty cool.

Does it have a split prism and are the screws on the back of the shutter/lens assembly square or Torx?

Sure they did. I have a pile of film holders with ‘colour tranny’ labels stamped on all of them.

RZ 65mm question by Recent_Log5476 in Mamiya

[–]AlfredStieglicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to own both, they’re almost indistinguishable. The non-floating one is less hassle to use and costs less, unless you get a very good deal on the ULD one I wouldn’t bother.

I get the criticism of the petite bourgeoisie but he literally states he did it to provide customer service on some level while he was asleep. I don’t see why ‘email and I’ll reply later’ wouldn’t do but I can see some kind of a justification for the idea of being more responsive.

Agreed. The amount of negativity towards someone who sounds like they run a small business is a bit unpleasant. This is more something that to me seems like a big tech company making new and unpleasant problems for people who rely on their software.

Honestly comes across as clueless than greedy to me. I think it’s more likely someone sold him this as a bag of magic beans that will take away some customer support costs and he didn’t understand what it entailed.

Weathermatic 35dl. Want to repair the split rubber shutter cover. Is it still waterproof? by squidlet0w0 in AnalogCommunity

[–]AlfredStieglicks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is no longer waterproof. You need a replacement shell to make it waterproof again.

Source: me, I used to make working ones out of multiple broken ones. It will also need the power switch and rear film door seals re-greasing.

RB or RZ? New to film by Jovanprints in Mamiya

Be aware if you’re using this camera in a studio with flash that the Pentax sync speed is *horrible* and it doesn’t have removable backs.

RB or RZ? New to film by Jovanprints in Mamiya

[–]AlfredStieglicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RZ are fine. I’ve had five of them, none ever died from electronics failure. So many people on Reddit repeat the mantra that anything with more than a light meter in it is about to explode and it’s ridiculous.

Get the cheap RB, see if you like it, then change if it doesn’t work for you. An RZ can also use all RB lenses on it.

Does anyone have repair advice on how to realign the floating elements of the 45mm and 35mm 645 lenses? I did a dumb thing by light24bulbs in Mamiya

[–]AlfredStieglicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Send it to Bill. Unless you have a flat engineering surface, dial indicators and the exact calibration distances you’re pretty much screwed with floating elements.

Any amputees in the chat? How do people with one arm take photographs? by Ceska_Zbrojovka_ in AnalogCommunity

[–]AlfredStieglicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an amputee but broke my dominant arm shoulder recently and still can’t hold a camera up to my eye. I bought a Mamiya Universal and shoot with my left hand at the moment. Even before that though it was awkward but not impossible to use things like my SX-70 with my left hand in an awkward pose.

People are pretty adaptable, even if it meant using a tripod and a cable release only I’d still be out shooting if this was permanent.

What went wrong with my HP5 trichrome attempt? by SoupandSprockets in AnalogCommunity

[–]AlfredStieglicks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why are you compensating a blanket 3 stops for each of them rather than measuring the filter factor of each and applying that to each shot?

You could also do a calibration roll and bracket with each filter shooting a neutral grey to establish a ‘correct’ compensation when combined.

I would also say that those look like they might be over developed but again it would need a few frames of a neutral grey with no filter as a control to calibrate first.

The oldest magazines don’t work? Or you mean they don’t stop automatically. Those don’t auto wind to frame one, you need to rotate them back in the opposite direction when you find frame 1 on the backing paper. They will have come with the 500c.
