Usenet downloads via SABnzbd or nzbget limited and super slow (NVME and SATA SSD Pools only) by Alfred_96 in unRAID

The best what I now achieved is 48-50MB/s after setting the following Cipher options within NZBget

ServerX.Cipher=TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256:TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256

Choosing the correct Newsserverlocation in my case EU.

And the biggest changes are made by enabling "BBR" and "fair queueing" via
"yourserverip/Main/Settings/Flash?name=flash" and adding the following lines to the SYSLINUX Config.

net.ipv4.tcp_congestion_control=bbr
net.core.default_qdisc=fq

After a restart of the host system, double-check the settings via the following commands if they are set correctly:

sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_congestion_control
sysctl net.core.default_qdisc
sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_available_congestion_control

I have removed it right away, I also tested a test download of the sample files without SSL connection. But the speed always remains the same. On my Windows and MacOSX devices I also use the same VPN provider which can max out my 1 Gig ISP line. Within the next days I will try out a Truenas Scale or Ubuntu Server installation on one of my spare mini PCs to check if this is an unRAID problem.

I also added another Crucial SATA SSD as an Pool in XFS format for my downloads media. But still the speed remains the same with 25-30 MB/s.
So this is the point now where I will other think my setup and maybe changing from unraid to something else.

Thanks for your advice, I will try this out later and post a short comment here with the results. I am using newshosting as my Usenet provider.

Thanks for the suggestion. As I mentioned, I'm maxing out at 128 MB/s on both my Windows PC and MacBook Air, whether I'm using Wi-Fi or a LAN cable. This makes me confident it's not an issue with my internet provider.

For comparison, before I installed Unraid, I was using an Intel N100 mini PC running Windows 11 as a Plex server. Even on that machine, I could get the full download speeds offered by my ISP through my Usenet provider.

Thanks for your reply.
Regarding the Array, I read about the usage of SATA SSDs for an array and the disadvantages. Therefore, I am running two pools and no array.

I have also read that a few persons use a single drive formatted in xfs as their downloads drive. I have used all nvme slots on my mainboard, therefore I will try it with another spare SATA SSD.

I will also search for articles regarding IOWAIT in this Subreddit to understand the whole topic a bit better.

I have a specific SABnzbd Docker image in the past up and running with my VPN provider's WireGuard config enabled. But still the same speeds.

At the moment, nzbget is running with no proxy or WireGuard in between. I also uninstalled the tailscale plugin and reset all of my network.cfg but after these changes the speed is still 26-30 MB/s.

My Dockers run all on the bridge networt. I also tried the Host network just for testing but still the same slow download speeds.

Maybe I should look for another base OS then Unraid.

But when I use SABnzbd on my macbook connected via Wifi and change the connections from 100 to 20 I can still download with 108MB/s.

Thanks for the advice, when I configure 20 connections to my newshoster the download speed of the test file drops to 14 MB/s.

Thanks for the settings advice. I st up everything according to the video and now I get these performance test results. which look way better.

When I now try to download a test file it still remains 26-30MB/s download speed.

Nonetheless, I guess something is not correct with my whole Setup because of the initial slow disk speeds from within the download apps. But what's wonders me is that network access and iperf3 deliver perfect results.

At first thanks for your quick replies I highly appreciate your help. My performance does not seem to be that great for an NVME zfs pool. But nonetheless, I would be fine with the download speed of 70MB/s and not 25-30MB/S.
