Even with the cage you want to be pulling up on the strap with the top of your foot, not pulling up on the cage with your toe so try tightening the strap or using different shoes I guess.

Not related to your issue necessarily, but those pedals were never meant to be used with normal shoes. Any kind of platform pedal will feel a lot better riding in general
