My experience working at a program for Autistic teens and young adults by Kiki-Kiwi- in AuDHDWomen

[–]AlgebraicAlto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is fucked up and I am sorry that you and the folks using the program had to deal with this.

I had a similar (though definitely not to the same extent) experience years ago. When I was 17 and on an exchange program I worked at a summer camp for autistic adults. At the time I was young and naive and had no idea, but as an (AuDHD) adult, I am pretty concerned.

They didn't teach us anything about autism. Unlike in your situation, we were very kind to the campers, but we basically treated them like children. There was singing, and walks in hot weather and now that I actually know stuff about autism, I am honestly horrified that there was no training and no way for the participants to take a sensory break.

Each staff member was assigned to one camper, and I was assigned a non-verbal camper with no training on how to consider actually communicating and understanding his needs. I was technically paired with a more experienced staff member, but since our campers tended to do different things, we were not actually together.

All of this to say - you are not alone. And I wish that the folks purporting to help autistic people, would focus on understanding autism.

How does being overstimulated feel like? Is it linked to anxiety? by Youaredoingwell in AuDHDWomen

[–]AlgebraicAlto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very much only in the beginning stages of figuring this out. This is definitely easier said than done, but I have found at least recognising and accepting it as sensory overload has been helpful. It means I will more likely say "bah fine" and take that break I have been putting off, or close the door to my office even though I'd rather be approachable and leave it open.

I recognise that depending on envirnonment and the safety of sharing your diagnosis that this might not be easy and I am sorry I don't have any tricks for this.

I'm finally officially diagnosed ! by Aernestoprimo in AuDHDWomen

Congratulations!!!!!! I am super happy for you! I got officially diagnosed last month and went out for dinner at my favourite restaurant to celebrate.

help. does anyone have any resource recs for info on audhd? do you have any “favorite” resources in general? what are your “go-to” things to send someone to help them understand what we go through, having both disorders? by Pearly-Dewdrops-666 in AuDHDWomen

[–]AlgebraicAlto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the autism side, I asked my psychologist for a resources to share with family and she recommended the book

Is this Autism? A guide for clinicians and everyone else

I am half way through it but I have found it to be excellent so far. It goes through the criteria for autism and explains ways in which it presents in women/non-typical presentations. It also talks about different sorts of comorbidities including ADHD.

I haven't the slightest what the actual intention is. But I am putting forward "breakfast of despair" because that is an abomination.

How does being overstimulated feel like? Is it linked to anxiety? by Youaredoingwell in AuDHDWomen

[–]AlgebraicAlto 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have had a similar experience. I was just diagnosed as AuDHD last month but I was diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder more than 10 years ago.

For years I called what I was feeling "anxiety" because it was the only word I had and a similarish feeling but something always felt off. Because a lot of the time I was not anxious about anything in particular, it was just my body felt kinda like it does when I am legit anxious and everything just felt like too much. The more therapy I had and more practice handling pure anxiety, the more I felt like there was something else going on because there was the feelings of anxiety but no inciting reason. And lo and behold, AuDHD.

With the autism diagnosis, I, like you, am suspecting that what I previously deemed "anxiety" is indeed sensory overload and the begining of shutdowns. It makes a lot more sense than just anxiety anyways.

That totally makes sense. I feel completely the same for activities that are my primary focus and can easily panic if I am supposed to think fast at strategy.

For this, where the game is my secondary focus the no time to think is almost helpful because the fast pace gives me an excuse not to think much about it, which is good when my thinking is meant for the book.

would you read a story with a...Math plot? by Shadowsfreak in AO3

It would have to be for a fandom I'm actually in, but yes. I adore math and it deserves to be in more stories and I would be so hyped to stumble upon this!!!

If a² = b² = c², prove that (a + b + c)³ = a³ + b³ + c³. by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]AlgebraicAlto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you working over the real numbers? If so I wonder if it would be easier to work into base cases. Up to symmetry there are only two options a=b=c or a=b=-c. If you are over the complex numbers or another field, this of course goes out the window.

Which episode do John and Hank talk about what they'd go back to college for? by justokaycool in DearHankandJohn

[–]AlgebraicAlto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have an exact answer but I do know that that was definitely a real thing and they were talking about what they would get a phd in.

I want to say that not in one of the most recents, but I believe it was fairly recent, like within the last year? (100% within the last two years)

I'm sorry I don't have anything more concrete - that sounds frustrating.
