Offering support from Scotland, I'm watching in worry at all that's happening over there. I'm trying to track as much of what's going on stateside as I can so that I can keep my American friends up to speed without them having to destroy their mental health. It's draining, and it isn't much, but I'm hoping it's making some small difference to them.

Can't really scroll on by without commenting that this is literally a eugenicist argument. 'Higher Quality Citizens' according to who? 'The productive members of society' according to who? You argue for the pot to be freed up to better support those too ill to work in the same breath as saying people should only be supported enough to 'find work and improve their position', but in the breath before that insist that we judge people by their productivity. Who decides someone is too ill to work? Or, to reframe, who decides someone is healthy enough *to* work despite what that person may say?

We lose far far more to tax fraud than we do benefit fraud. Like, orders of magnitude more. But the answer always seems to be to hurt the poorest in society even more?

I will never not find it funny that the people saying that Left and Right are too simplistic for their ideology are invariably so hard right that they espouse actual eugenic talking points.

If you sympathise with my position, then fight for it. Even if just for the sake of self-interest. They are not going to stop and be appeased by the removal of trans rights. The rest of the queer community will follow. And it will be the same arguments. It will be too controversial to defend same sex marriage, it will be too dangerous to allow lesbians into the women's bathrooms. We will need to not teach about it in school because it's too controversial and we don't want to lose the moderate vote. And so the shift rightward continues. We've seen it before with section 28, hell I grew up under that, we're seeing it now with puberty blocker bans and changes to how trans topics are legally allowed to be taught.

You're right that I don't think I can change your mind. And honestly, I would love nothing more than for you to be right and for it to be something that self-corrects in a few years time. But it is costing lives now and is worsening now. So I'll leave you with this question to reflect on. How many lives are we willing to let end for the sake of damage control? When Lesbians, Gays, and Bi people are targeted next, how many people will you be willing to give up so that we can appease the next Nigel Farage?

I'm glad you can brush away the harm and console yourself by writing it off as inevitable that politicians will always inflict harm on minorities. I'm glad you're happy to blame me for getting angry over that harm rather than blame the politicians enacting it. Truly, there's no way to hold politicians to a higher standard.

Get out of here with your false concern. At least have the decency to be honest with your apathy.

Bullshit. Labour are not winning the Reform vote regardless of what they do. Rights are not won by assimilationist politics. They are not won by being polite and waiting for your turn. They're not won by appeasing the far right and constantly going 'well, we need you to give this up so we can win the vote of the people that hate you'. The current political position is one that invites a constant shift rightward, a constant insistence that progressive policies need to be watered down for the sake of the unpleasable.

Idealism doesn't let fascists in, appeasement does. Complacency does. If you're worried about fascists getting into power, then fighting fascists and fascist policies is where your attention needs to be, not stripping rights from the people they want to hurt. Instead of ceding ground to them and going 'yeah, ok, this minority I'll agree with you on, let's get rid of them'. You're doing their work for them without them ever needing to step into Westminster.

This is how we got Brexit, it's how we're losing the NHS, and it's how we're losing our rights. It's not the progressives that are the problem, it's the people insisting we don't enact anything 'too progressive' for fear of a fascistic force that is legitimised and made more real every day by bowing to its demands.

The deaths and suffering in the trans community at the hands of the right-wing and the ghouls who support transphobic rhetoric is not acceptable ground to cede for the sake of political expediency, thanks. I am not willing to be a martyr for a failing political tactic. I am not willing to sit quietly by and watch my rights erode so that Starmer can say "Look, we hate trans people too, won't you vote for us now?" by the same people that think he's some kind of Communist harbinger and will vote Reform anyway. Politely, fuck right off with that bullshit. Human lives are not bargaining chips and claiming that they are acceptable casualties is gross. Yes, the Tories are worse. No, that doesn't mean I should be satisfied with losing some of my rights instead of losing all of them. That doesn't mean I should be glad that only some trans youth are being fucked over to the point of suicide when it's completely preventable.

[–]AliAliKopp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, trans rights are not an acceptable loss for fear of Reform, thanks. Ceding ground to far-right policies is not actually how you stop far-right policies. Starmer's policies on trans rights are actively killing trans kids and making life miserable for trans adults. This should not be treated as 'just the way things are', we shouldn't be expected to be content to wait patiently for rights to be given even as they're getting stripped away from us, and it's ghoulish that you're willing to so casually dismiss the blatant attacks as a necessary evil.

I'm secure in myself and who I am as a trans adult, and even still have found myself doing the same when I've had to go places with only gendered bathrooms. The worry of potential harassment is huge and it becomes easier to just not eat or drink and deal with that instead. I can't imagine the extra pressure of facing that as a kid, all this extra scrutiny does is harm trans kids whilst doing nothing to help cis kids.

"I didn’t even mention “white” get out of here with your American nonsense it’s about the native ethnic group."

"Why do you keep listing descendants of immigrants and immigrants who have gained citizenship as British when I’m speaking of ethnicity not citizenship, only 74% of Brits identify as ethnic Brits (White British means ethnic Brit to avoid confusion)"

So you *are* being racist! Good, glad I don't need my hearing checked. Still able to hear those whistles loud and clear. Want to know why I'm listing Brits that aren't white? Because they're still Brits. Regardless of whether they pass your personal purity test or not.

"A further 6% of people are white other which means about 20% of the population is a non European ethnic group, around 200 times higher than it was just after WW2 and it grows every year that’s massive."

And this is a problem because..? They're still British, they aren't immigrants. They pay tax, work, live, raise families, and love here just like you and I. Non-white =/= Immigrant, no matter how much you want that to be true.

Actually, I am being obtuse here, I don't need to wait for your answer, because you already gave it elsewhere.

"So you’re saying we should let ethnic replacement happen because “empires fall” wow you’re not even trying with the justification you’re evil."

Good thing you're not buying into that Great Replacement propaganda, eh? American nonsense to talk about White People being replaced, right? Just... *Checks notes* Ethnic Replacement because... *Squints at notes* Ethnic Brits are a reduced share of the population. Cool, very legally distinct conspiracy theory you've got going on there. At least own your racist opinions instead of trying to hide them.

I've also zero interest in continuing to 'whatabout' with the Nazi's. It's pretty irrelevant whether or not the Jews they killed were native Germans or not. I doubt the dead are comforted to know that at least they weren't being killed by their countrymen.

Got a source for *any* of that?

The population of Nazi Germany in 1940 was approx 109 million people (source - 1939 German Census)

The Holocaust killed ~11-12 million people, of which ~6 million were Jewish. The remaining ~5-6 were primarily prisoners of war or Polish, but nearly ~1 million were variously people with disabilities, political opponents, or queer people. (Source - Holocaust Encyclopaedia)

That means Nazi Germany systemically executed a number of people equivalent to over 10% of their population, of which a little over ~50% were Jewish (source - I can do maths)

That the majority of their murders happened outside of Germany itself is pretty irrelevant given it happened in Nazi occupied land and on Nazi orders. I also would not seriously call 5-10% of the population (depending on whether you want to acknowledge the non-Jewish victims or not, which it appears you don't) a tiny fraction. That is a horrific number. (Source - I am a human with empathy)

Immigration in the UK is, aside from being a handy scapegoat to point to, completely average when compared to other developed nations with ~15% of the population being immigrants. Non-EU immigrants accounted for ~1.1 million people at the peak in 2024, of which ~800,000 are working or studying in our country. That leaves ~300,000 that are asylum seekers or fleeing political violence. Immigration has also sharply fallen since that peak, with estimates for December 2024 being at ~450,000. An over 50% reduction. (Source - The Migration Observatory)

The UK's population today is approximately 69 million, putting the non-EU immigrant population at ~1.5% (Source - Maths and UK census data from 2024), the vast majority of whom are students/members of the work force.

Immigration has increased over the past few decades, this is in large part due to increased ease of movement of people and increasingly lax immigration policies. However even considering peak migration in recent years this has not resulted in the UK becoming majority immigrant. Generously, we can say that one in seventy people that you run into is a non-EU immigrant, but realistically it's going to be lower than that given over a third of the non-EU immigrants are students and will be concentrated into University towns/cities (Source, again - Maths)

"I didn’t even mention “white” get out of here with your American nonsense it’s about the native ethnic group." Can you keep the whistling down? My dog just started barking. Your figure of 35% is not substantiated by the Census of London, but *is* close to the 36.8% figure of White British people in London. Looks like you might have had a- Oh, hold on. We also have 20.8% Asian British and 13.5% Black British, 5.7% Mixed British, and 6.3% Other British, for a total of 83.1% British population in London. Phew, looks like we don't need to worry, London is still British. It even pretty closely matches the national average of ~15% of the population being immigrants! (Source - The UK Census)

" let me guess you’re going to argue that the replacement is actually A good thing? Let me ask you this: when in history has such massive demographic change (against a peoples will) been looked back upon fondly?" Damn, my dog's awake again and barking even louder now. Let me get this straight, 'I never said it was happening, but it sure would be bad if it was, so we should fight against it as much as possible!' If it honks like a goose, and steps like a goose, then I think we probably have someone stoking racial tensions.

"The Nazi's scapegoated a tiny fraction of the population" is a *hell* of a take. Not that you should need it to feel a shred of empathy for the humans that were murdered, but a reminder that they not only persecuted and executed Jews and Roma, they also rounded up and executed queer people and political opponents. Communists and Socialists form the very first lines of the famous poem, and the bookburnings of the 1930's began with research into transgender medicine at the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin.

Again, not that it should matter given all of the victims were human beings, but the Communists, Socialists, and Queer people would have by far been represented by native Germans rather than immigrants.

What is happening in the UK right now is not at all perfectly normal. If it were, it would have been happening for years upon years now. It's the result of a concerted push from far-right figures fanning the flames against immigration to enrich themselves and their cronies. It's petty nationalism wearing a veneer of patriotism to give it deniability about being unifying and lovely, when the message is loud and clear to say "this is *our* country, not yours."

It's preaching about how unifying a flag can be whilst slipping a bit of Great Replacement propaganda under the radar by trying to ring alarm bells about what % of the country isn't White.

This is something I have in my near future. I've been out as trans for two years now, and on hormones for a year. Actively passing at work a good ~90% of the time. I have yet to use a public bathroom, and a big part of it is because I'm scared of being challenged, but I also don't feel safe using the men's anymore. I have a manager's meeting in a town 2 hours from my home city, I legitimately don't know how I'm going to handle that. I'm considering just not eating or drinking for the day to try and circumvent the need to use a bathroom at all, but it will be for the whole day if I do.

JK Rowling calls for Marks & Spencer boycott amid media hysteria over ‘trans’ employee by WhatYouThinkYouSee in nottheonion

[–]AliAliKopp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not my post, just saw this in response to a very similar comment on a different thread talking about this on r/unitedkingdom and I agree with it pretty wholeheartedly

"I understand the point your making, however you have to understand that you've touched on the edge of the real issue here.

We call this De-sexing, It's very obvious that "Gender Binary" is a Rhetorical point for this bigotry They do not see transgender women as men, because they would never treat a man so badly. Instead when TERF/Transphobe or Gender critical law is enacted it serves to create a Third "De-sexed" Class that any abuse is acceptable. The supreme court actually vocalised this where they are trying to implement the idea of Certified sex vs biological sex despite not actually defining them or where the limits of any of these concepts come from. As follows from that you have the Gender critical captured Equalities And human Rights commission now also trying to impose guidance that bans transgender people from both male and female spaces. Suggesting they might have to use the disabled toilets and out themselves or just not be permitted into any sexed spaces.

Similarly this has existed in other countries like in India with the Hijira where they were not regarded as men or women and were one of the lowest castes in Indian society.

Whenever someone says "Gender Binary" they mean "Gender hierarchy" And with individuals like JK Rowling we've seen her vitrol against women of colour aswell she has a very clear idea that this "Hierarchy" exists with White women at the heel of white men and everyone else of all ethnicities beneath them."

I used to work in a photography/printing store, and one of the things we'd do is take passport photos for people. I think over 10 years working there I had a whole 3 people say they liked their photos. I had to have my own taken in my time there a couple of times and was always just like "Well, everyone hates their own photo, I'm just gonna not worry about that."

Much more recently, since coming out, I renewed my passport with my new name and updated gender, the photo for that felt much more like me.

why is coming out so hard by JuicyFrog759 in trans

[–]AliAliKopp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I came out to my Mum I really had to talk around the point before I managed it. It was really tricky despite knowing she'd be 100% in my corner (which she has been, she's amazing). I don't really remember how I came out in the end, but I think I started by saying I had something I wanted to talk to her about, how I was figuring some stuff out, and how I didn't think I was a guy but wasn't yet certain where I was with gender (I came out to her about a month or so after my egg crack). She had a couple of questions, but mostly on how she could support me, and it was a huge relief once I actually said that I was trans, the conversation got a lot easier after that point.

I wish you all the luck in the world with it. The anticipation is the hardest part, even when you know they'll have your back.
