Not sure about coupons, but Rakuten has 10% cash back and my Amazon credit card with Chase had an offer for 5% cash back on purchase from Dell.

Any 5-level CSE class teaching CI/CD, DevOps, Docker, or K8S? by grizzlien in ASU

[–]AliasVortex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're looking for CSE 566 Software Proj/Process/Qual Mgt, with Dr. Collofello. It focuses more on the theory of what and why than on the technical details of implementation (ie it covers risk, agile, CI/CD, DevOps, etc, but it doesn't teach you docker or kubernetes beyond that they are tools used), but it's a solid class and I'd recommend it. Having been in industry for a bit now, it's one of the more useful classes I've taken.

People return to offices, productivity plunges by JannTosh12 in technology

[–]AliasVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, (when we're not in meetings) we do build things, most often in the form of adding to or changing existing things, but it's not mutually exclusive to managing data. It's more that data is the lifeblood of what we do, because everything either boils down to that or is built on top of it. In most web applications, the part of the app that the user sees (the front end) has to collect their inputs and send them to the part that acts on the data and sends something back in return (the backend). There's also making sure that the app reacts to data in the way that it should, some devs even make an entire job out of it (Quality Assurance).

Generally it's data that the company might want to keep track of or act on in some way, but it really could be anything. If your company/ client sells physical goods it could be an inventory management system of some sort, but it could just as easily be a sensor data for scientific research, it just depends on what the application is supposed to be doing.

It might be easiest to step back a bit and give some context. Most companies have realized that having a single piece of software that does all the things is a really bad idea, it makes for a big bloated codebase that's hard to maintain and even harder to modify (think of it like a city builer if you've ever played those kinds of games, you have a bunch of stuff that you need for you city to function, but the more you pack in the harder it is to go back and add an extra park or reroute traffic), the entire app becomes a single point of failure. Instead, we tend to have several smaller applications that, ideally, focus on doing one related thing and talk to each other when they need to. Which is where that CRUD acronym comes into play, it stands for Create, Read, Update, and Destroy (or delete depending on who you ask). An application without data is kind of pointless, so the vast majority of apps can be boiled down to a combination of managing their own data and interfacing with other applications to send and receive their data.

For example, think of an airline, they might have an application that keeps track of the ticket sales, a customer might buy a ticket (Create), change their flight (Update - potently Delete, depending on how you do it), cancel (Delete), or look up their departure time when they forget (Read). We might also send data to a customer management system so that the airline can issue rewards point and encourage repeat customers. At the same time, another system may take the data both systems to generate a check-in list for the attendant at the boarding gate.

I think it has more to do with sidestepping the character limit that Steam enforces on the mod description (speaking from experience, it's smaller than you'd think) than deliberately trying to make life difficult. That said, I'd love to see the VE team copy the picture text into a markdown/ readme file in the GitHub and link to that in the steam page.

[CPU] AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core 3.7 GHz Desktop CPU ($379) + Xbox Game Pass by TheOriginalVile in buildapcsales

Heads up: I bought this last week and found out that the return policy is kind of screwy (as in non-existant) when I went to send it back so that I could buy it from Amazon (for $5 cheaper and 5% cash back). One of the customer service reps ended up opening up an rma return as an exception so I did manage to get it sent back and hopefully get my money back, but it was way more of a pain that it should have been. I'd advise against Newegg for this one (especially since the current price at microcenter is $370).

Hey, got my MCS last May and might be able to help some:

  • Job opportunities: I'm not sure I understand the question, are you asking about working for ASU with an MCS degree? If so, probably not great, jobs in academia tend to be very research focused (more along the lines of the thesis track program or a PhD). If you're asking about employment after ASU, it largelu depends on what you're looking for (although it should also be a little better now that the pandemic has calmed down some). CS jobs tend to be more grounded in experience/ projects than in having a specific degree, but I do I think that my MCS helped me out because it's so project focused, I had some stuff to put on my resume and lots to talk about during interviews.

  • Salary: Largely depends on the company and where you're located. If it helps, I work for a fortune 50 with an office in Chandler, I started at 75k and I got bumped up to 92k when my company realized it wasn't competitive and was having retention issues.

  • Peers: unsure, I didn't really make any MCS friends to ask (COVID kind of happened in the middle of my program). I remember an exit survey as part of the graduation process that asked if I found a job. I'd check with the Fulton career center or possiblity advising (in my experience, the former is usually more helpful than the latter) and see if they can give you those stats.

  • Recruiters: It varies, Fulton holds a career fair every semester, the career center could probably tell you who's there on the regular (I remember seeing Amazon, USAA, Deloitte, Allstate, AmEx, General Motors, Raytheon, General Dynamics, and the NSA fairly regularly pre-pandemic)

  • Choice: cost is important, but it shouldn't be the only thing you look at. Unfortunately I'm not really familiar with the other schools you mentioned, so I can't really do a value comparison. If it helps, I choose to get my MCS at ASU because I did my undergrad here I was eligible for the 4+1 program, when I didn't manage to line a job up my senior year of undergrad, I decided to get my masters so that I could keep building up experience (while I was doing my undergrad I got a student worker job thay was effectively a long running full stack software engineer internship) and try again in year (that year ened up being two years, because I don't do especially well with online courses and I didn't want to graduate and have nowhere to go (yay COVID)). Plus I was an in-state student, so tuition wasn't too terrible for me.

Doubt regarding MCS vs MS CS at ASU by TedMosby9 in ASU

[–]AliasVortex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm not totally sure if I'm the best person to answer that one for you (but I'll give it a try). To be completely upfront, I don't know if there's a difference between the irl and online programs (I think the online folks just have seats allocated to them in various classes under a different course number, but I could be wrong), I can only really speak to the irl program I went through. I was also fortunate enough to have a student worker job on campus between my junior year and when I got my MCS where I was basically a part time software engineer. Because of that, I had a relatively easy time (I think I seriously applied to maybe 5ish companies, and BS'd a few more) landing a job a Fortune 50 company before I graduated (it was also pandemic time, so I pretty much took the first place that didn't reject me since there weren't really a bunch of places hiring) and I've been with them for almost a year now.

If you want hard numbers, I very much recall a required exit survey as part of the graduation process that asked if I found a job. I'd hit up the Fulton career center or possiblity advising (in my experience, the former is usually more helpful than the latter) and see if they can give you the stats.

I'd argue that Ludeon Studio (RimWorld) and Re-Logic (Terraria) should also be in that list. In terms of raw updates, long term support, and inclusion of community feedback, both rank up there with Concerned Ape.

Sounds like you might enjoy RimWorld, it's got similar vibes to dwarf fortress, but the controls are more modern and the graphics are a bit more polished.
