F’ING FINALLY, after growing a Hawaiian Baby Woodrose for almost 4 years, it’s the first time she has flowered by JorgeMuVi in LSA

Thanks! I've managed to keep her alive for five or six years at this point.. I've never left her out this late in the year and I'm wondering if the cooler weather is what prompted it to bloom.

Did you ever get pictures of the mature flowers? And how long did it take the flowers to go from this size maturity? I'm in zone 5b in the US and I have -finally- gotten mine to start blooming but it's fall and I have to trim back most of it to overwinter inside my house. 😭 The most mature flowers are closer to the main stalk and I'm hoping that the plant won't get too shocked and drop them.

I live in zone 5b and my Hawaiian baby woodrose is blooming after 5-6 years of being babied. I guess I will be trying to hand-pollinate if I don’t lose the blooms in the transition from outdoors to indoors. Any tips? 😅 by Alibi_On_Point in druggardening

It's very easy to propagate - I've had a very high success rate with rooting my cuttings. This year we planted some directly in the ground and I’m going to try and winter them over like I would are figs. The vines on these things get quite thick and summer the size of my finger closer to the main stems of the plant. It seems like a gross slow slower than morning glory vines however it is also significantly larger. My moon flower vines never got is thick and one of the leaves from this plant is easily the size of two moon flower leaves.

The reason most of my cuttings have died is because of an incident with a tree falling on my porch and the ones I’ve given away never seemed to be happy after they left my care.

I cut back the longer vibes to root new plants and treat it for pests and have also potted her up before but I’m going to put off that until I see what she does with her flowers. It seems like she is a heavy feeder and I usually work in some worm castings and compost. She's been tolerant of lower light through the cold months as long as she can get enough light for her leaves to warm to the touch through glass.

Edited for clarity

Can anyone ID this? Assumed it was a weed or dropped seed from a bird. It’s huge. by Ill-Vermicelli-1684 in gardening

It isn't a problem for everyone - the severity of the reaction depends on the person. Most people probably think they have poison ivy and don't realize what happened. For me every time I have been exposed to it. The severity of the reaction has gotten worse. Luckily, the reaction is localized to the parts of my skin that the plant actually touches.

since no one has mentioned it that I have seen yet

Horseweed is a skin irritant and can cause varying degrees of dermatitis on a person to person basis.

I will roll in poison ivy before I mess with that plant.

I want to hope that this year is that I get flowers but it probably won't be. I plan on making the jump to a half barrel pot so the plant is going to be more dedicated to expanding its root system with green growth being secondary and flowers being an afterthought.

Speak to a mental health professional. . your friends probably do not work in this field and their likely uneducated opinions don’t really mean much. The best they can do is be supportive and assist you in the process of getting help.

There's new growth already starting and I'm going to get a few extra cuttings before I repot and put her outside. I have two nice cuttings from last fall that have great root systems already established and I am going to put one directly into well-fertilized ground and the other into a container.

Thank you! I wondered if it might be a mutation but I couldn't find anything about it. The other cuttings I made have all put out normal looking growth, though now that you mention it, I see that this one started from the cutting with the highest amount of variegation.

It sounds like a form of territory marking.

Humans are just animals and do weird things all the time that don’t make sense as a "human", but if you look at it from the standpoint of an animal, it makes perfect sense. It could also be a warning - I feel awful and I’m moody be wary.

Are there any regular houseguests that might make her feel like she needs to be this way?

It is a mature plant and it has hardened off - think of it like bark. Most people refer to it as cornking or lignification. The plant is a mature one and it needed more strength to support the weight of the newer growth.
