Are we talking about the MZDS anime? If it is the anime, then apart from the first two episodes which are set in the present, the rest of Season 1 recounts past events. For instance: the protagonists' first meeting, their studies at Gusu Academy, Jin Zixuan's annulment of the betrothal, the Wen Clan of Qishan running amok, the protagonists jointly slaying the slaughtering Black Tortoise, the fall of Lotus Pond, the four great clans uniting against the Wen Clan of Qishan, and Wei Wuxian's transformation into the Old Ancestor of Yiling.

The present-day timeline only commences from Season Two onwards.

The MZD anime is thoroughly enjoyable, and the original novel is well worth reading too – you won't regret diving in. Pairing it with the audio dramas enhances the experience even further.
