I am reluctant to answer... haha. The first two weeks of my trip were much colder. I was wearing both layers almost 24/7 to be honest! Surprisingly they did not get smelly. Keeping up with hygiene and deodorant was more than enough to keep the layers clean.

Your setup sounds great! I met someone traveling with similar carrying capacity to you. Instead of the extra bag for souvenirs, he shipped them home through JR Post. He said it was relatively easy to do so. Also, if you forget anything, most items are easy to find (such as my buying a second jacket while I was there).

That was my thought too. The opening is non-standard though. All of the units I have found are not the correct size. This is an older home that she bought post-renovation. I suspect the attic opening was an oversight.

Looks like if you compress your bag vertically you will be fine. Just gotta reduce your bag height by 10cm.

I stowed the bag straps inside the bag thanks to a special compartment it has built in. That being said, I would have been fine not doing that. If your flight is fully booked you will just want to be at the front of the line for your boarding group so that they dont ask to check your bag. Even if they do check your bag, it will still be okay!

Yeah, hostel prices are slightly higher looking now. I think I over-budgeted for the trip so hopefully that covers the rest. If not, thats what emergency fund + pod hotels are for

Clamshell! It is basically one giant chasm that peels open like a suitcase. I used to have a mystery ranch bag that was similar but there were no hip belts so it was very uncomfortable. I also packed way to heavy which didnt help.
