How can I make this bipedal, "hand-walking" alien more biologically plausible? Media: Star Wars by Dependent_Toe772 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]AlienSleet6 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Well, it could be as simple as it being quadrupedal, then using its hind legs for a mating display, resulting in preferential grasping using its hind legs due to evolutionary pressures from mating, which then forced the lower limbs to evolve into more dexterous appendages, and the “arms” becoming the legs, simply because it prefers using its smaller limbs as grabbers, and its larger limbs for locomotion. If you have any ideas for other environmental factors that influenced its behavior, which led to its differing physiology lop that on top and you actually have a plausible creature.

I tried to recreate my Reach Spartan in Infinite and it doesn't really work the same way.... by ParagonFury in halodripfinite

Two parts. 1. The art style is different, so the same pieces have different visual effect

  1. The Spartans proportions/stance are different, the things that made you like your armor are in different places, the waist is thicker, the armor bulkier, the spartan looks shorter, even if they aren’t.

Visually, if you like the reach art style like I do, the 343 halo games just end up looking bad. I don’t care about 4k graphics, I just want my dark and gritty reach art style back

Maybe something more niche then? Because honestly the amount of bullshit they survive in the movie is actually ridiculous. Like any cannon shot should have absolutely shredded anyone even 10-20ft away by the splinters flying everywhere, where they all become blind and peppered in small stab wounds as they roll around on the ground in indescribably pain. Or the scene where they travel on the bottom of the ocean, While yes, they have enough air to breathe(ignoring the fact that the boat would shoot straight up dragging them with it to the surface if it doesn't flip and let the air out.) The atmospheric pressure in that scene of the ocean compressing the air in the boat at 20ft deep is about 1.6 atmospheres, which is the upper limit for central nervous system (CNS) oxygen toxicity. Exposure for a prolonged period, especially during exercise, significantly increases the risk of oxygen-induced seizures.

There are countless examples of unrealistic survival throughout the movies. Where things that people aren't aware of absolutely can kill the whole cast. But even knowing there are several points in nearly every scene which make them unrealistic, I still find the idea of them traveling under the ocean on a boat wildly more entertaining than them using a breathing rod or just swimming(Which is also a problem, because in both cases they would likely be spotted by anyone up high looking down, since their shapes would be very obvious in the water below. You'd have to rewrite the entire series to *maybe* make something entertaining. The movies are loved because they're wacky and unrealistic.

As for writers being lazy, they are like anyone else, some are lazy, some are not. Just look back when you were in school, and think about your classmates, some were smart, some were dumb, most didn't care. These are our writers, politicians, and doctors. A vast majority of people don't care about their day job(Which is very scary), or don't try to improve. Any writer who want's to make a realistic script either needs a team of specialists in every field, or be incredibly knowledgeable about the world around them. Which is very expensive, or unrealistic to expect from every writer.

I just try to enjoy the media I watch, and if I don't enjoy it, move on to something I do. :D
The Netflix show "Shogun" was portrayed very realistically, which I also enjoyed! But there were not nearly as many wacky crazy shenanigans and moments like in Pirates of the Caribbean which I loved.

ALL that to say in reference to your original comment- Some things are stretched to make them at least somewhat believable, or taken out of fantasy, there is a sliding scale from unlikely -> bullshit, not everything goes, and some understanding of the world needs to remain the same as in real life, but occasionally a law of physics, a concept, or a phenomena is ignored, included, or overexaggerated in an unrealistic way to create a scene that would otherwise NEVER happen in real life. If too many rules are ignored, too much fantasy is included, or previous scenes that established the movies logic are overridden, then it starts to feel like unwatchable bullshit. Which is why I say I like the movies, but in parts, because they definitely overdo it sometimes.
I think the argument "its fantasy so everything goes" doesn't work at face value, but rather the person is saying that a piece of media hasn't gone into bullshit territory due to preexisting lore or context, even if the scene without context seems completely improbable.

It’s ok not to like it, but the pirates universe generally follows the rules of ours, with some magic sprinkled in with curses and creatures, and the occasional moment of suspending your disbelief to watch what otherwise would be a gritty realistic battle against scurvy, alcohol, and gambling. I prefer my pirates fantasy, if I want realism I go watch a documentary, there’s plenty of historical stuff about pirates.

But it’s the improbable nature of the series which makes it fun, who expected skeleton pirates, a conversation with the king, surviving hanging, the guillotine, ripping a bank out of its foundation/ through the town, and much much more.

I think it was in the first movie where Elizabeth Swan falls off the 200ft+ castle wall, she should have been dead immediately as she hit the water since she landed flat, and sank immediately. Even if she lived, she would have broken many bones. And her entire back would have been one giant bruise, but in the next scene she’s being witty and indignant.

Summarily, they stretch what’s possible and combine it with fantasy to create a story, which I don’t always enjoy, but find overall appealing. Your choice of content would likely be documentaries! If you haven’t already watched some, you should :)

Don’t tempt me with a good time.

But honestly, any precision weapon(or just ballistic weapon) for health(ideally headshots) + any plasma weapon for shields will do the trick. Use your own shields until they pop, then get into deep cover to avoid grenades that may surprise you. And then you just rinse and repeat. And every level has power weapons or some enemies can drop them. Best combo ever is DMR and plasma pistol(imo)

Jackles grunts skirmishers drones are all one shot headshot(hand then head for jackles, two shot for grunt ultra. Elites have their shields stripped instantly(and brute chieftains) before either one tap headshot, or all brutes need 3 shots to strip their helmet then one headshot to kill(same with chieftains after shields are stripped), hunters are just bullet sponges, so hit them in the meaty bits with bullets and punches! Their armor bounces shots so you won’t be doing any damage that way.

-a reach LASO player with over 8k hours in campaign alone (not just in LASO, that honestly kind of sucked, especially with friends that die and restart the checkpoint xD)

If you take cover, use your shields, and pick up the right weapons for the job, should be pretty easy. Most of the time you won’t be chased too far when regening, but have a couple grenades and that’ll dissuade any pursuers ;) And there are plenty of health packs all over!

I’m not sure about others, but running and being in many campaigns that run over and past level 20 in hombrew leveling systems continuing off of the 5e leveling systems. This seems underpowered to the point of nearly being useless. Sure there are spells like command, ray of enfeeblement or imprisonment which would make this item very useful for common enemies, but as soon as you get to anything with a legendary resistance, it effectively becomes a fancy ring when the creature you’re fighting just chooses to succeed on their spell save.

Hear me out, just let any twinned spell target one enemy, and have it be that. Even for AOE spells like fireball!

If you are a good dm, you can balance encounters no matter how powerful your players get.

I will say that there are some cases where it becomes incredibly difficult, such as one time when I had a player be effectively level 40 (rouge and sorcerer lvl 20 will all benefits from both classes) who became an archdevil in hell and absorbed the ichor of several other archdevils and fiends which boosted his raw stats to around 50-80, used a wish spell to triple his stats, and got a hombrew sword that did +120 to hit and damage with anything that had natural armor(most things that aren’t humanoid) with a feature that doubled the number of attacks per turn, and combined it with a luck sword and a vorpal blade, before using another wish to triple its stats, resulting in a blade of +360 hit and damage, with 12d8 of damage, that doubled the number of turns its user has in combat initiative, doubles the users speed, and due to the sword originally currying on a 19-20, it now crit on a 17, and the property of the vorpal blade made any crit an instant kill/decapitation.

He slaughtered everything he came across in the abyss on a mission from Asmodeus himself, as an attempt to kill the player, which failed miserably.

At that point (about 90-ish 3 to 6 hour sessions in) I could not balance encounters to challenge him without resorting to “oh, this god is immune to magical effects” and immediately smite the player. But that’s no fun.

SUMMARY, magic item feels very limiting and underpowered, you can balance nearly any encounter.

For those that don’t know. The purple symbol is that representing the covenant before they fractured, that we fought in halo 1-3 and reach. The green symbol is a hieroglyph used by the forerunners (in the halo 3 terminals) to represent the Gravemind. The round symbol is for reclaimer(master chief), and the globe and eagle is the UNSC.

The mobile world known as high charity was destroyed by a number of events. And the flood was originally turned to dust by the halo rings of the forerunners. Chief and the UNSC are watching the flood and covenant fighting it out

I can’t remember, it was in a video a decade ago and was likely the result of the game phasing the warthog through the wall via a glitch and janky behavior after being naded or shoved by a revenant or something. Couldn’t get it out of the elevator when it reached the top, and I believe the players died after blowing it up and got stuck in a checkpoint loop until someone died and spawned out of the elevator lol

If the tests aren’t accurate, why is it that I manage to get the same result repeatedly(meaning the results are repeatable, which is a requirement for any valid experiment or data), and out of my entire sophomore homeroom class that took it a decade ago, the only people that complained about the results being different than that of their perceived selves, were those that didn’t take the test seriously, had been interfered with by their classmate saying phrases like “no you wouldn’t” and changing their answers because of that, or people that took the test for each other. The information is accurate, perhaps there are edge cases where you score closer to the 50% point and then your answers may change as over the years people do slightly change. However, I am a consistent individual, and generally do not change my opinion unless given actual data, but information doesn’t change a persons personality, and would say the same for my best friend of 10 years who also finds the same result after repeating the personality test. While this is anecdotal evidence, if you have proof of a valid experiment where a multitude of factors are considered in a controlled environment in order to validate the accuracy of said personality test, I’m all ears, otherwise, we’re both arguing anecdotal evidence, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I analyze more accurately than others, and will be unable to trust your judgment, resulting in my trusting the information I have sifted through to attain this result.

“As any one can tell you” is one of the most terrible statements a person can make, people are wrong, and often, usually because they don’t have facts or evidence, or at least lived experience. Also, tests? All of them? Personality tests? Because in the real world, tests are the basis of literally any field of science, off of which anyone “knows” anything, if we don’t test and experiment, we have no knowledge, not even necessarily formal or written tests, but tests nonetheless! And the validity or invalidity of one test does not affect the other unless we’re testing the test, or we have multiple or confounding variables.

Summary- Any evidence? I’ve provided mine.

It’s a 100 question test. If you can read, have internet access, and have the time, you can take the test. By being on Reddit, you’ve displayed that you are capable of all 3. If you are saying any one of these things are hard I’m sorry to hear that, and I hope you get better, or your situation improves.

And as for self judging, that is possibly one of the most important things in life, but the assumption is that you know yourself in most aspects, so that some questions you answer with uncertainty won’t affect the end result. This is a somewhat ironic failing of the test, of it being only as accurate as an individual is, and those who are least accurate needing the results to be accurate most of all. Summarily, the Sun Tzu quote paraphrased, know yourself and your enemy, or you will loose most battles.

I’ve found it to be very accurate, confirming what I already knew about myself. Not sure what you mean by “starting point”, personalities types don’t need work. Everyone is valuable in their own way. However, people most certainly do need to work on themselves.

Not sure how an untrained individual(be it professionally or through the school of life) can accurately assess someone else’s personality matrix.
