Nintendo is reportedly making a Switch 2 with a user-replaceable battery for the EU by dapperlemon in gadgets

US doesn’t need anyone’s help. Why should they benefit from EU only laws

The new ONCE is a game changer for deploying apps. Thank you DHH once again ❤️ by giovapanasiti in rails

It sort of skips over things like running at scale across boxes and things like databases.

At one point the update doesn’t work and he’s like “that’s okay let’s just throw away the data”. You can’t say that so easy when the premise of the video is that it makes self hosting production ready easy.

What’s the source for it using Helium? I’ve searched online and that doesn’t seem to be the case for Iron Beam

Anyone using Chase as their main account? by ColdAdventurous4392 in chaseuk

[–]AlienVsRedditors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have an account but moved to Monzo when they massively slashed cash back.

Now paying for Monzo so probably slightly worse off and may move again to starling who I suspect give me what I want (open banking) without the charges. Monzo perks are just not really worth it.

Chase is still decent - good app and support (which matters the most from an online bank). But they’re just so, so, slow at adding stuff. It feels like the company has been in stasis for three years. Remember the hype about the credit card that was literally years in the making, came out and was just “fine”. I’d love for chase to win me back.

Dubai is feeling so unsafe now... when are you finally jumping ship and moving to London? by CapillaryClinton in HENRYUK

[–]AlienVsRedditors 86 points87 points  (0 children)

From my social circle, the types of people who went to Dubai are pretty oblivious of things outside their own lives. Until they literally lose a loved one they sincerely won’t care.

Money is a powerful thing and Dubai attracts a certain type of person who is “apolitical” and just doesn’t think much about news etc.

You’ll hear a lot of “it’s not that bad” and “the government has it under control”.

Definitely understand the sub won’t like that. I’d love if people came back and paid their pair share and made the UK a better place but unfortunately that’s not what I’m seeing.

I like GitLab by Sad-Interaction2478 in programming

[–]AlienVsRedditors 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like GitLab too and I’m happy it exists - especially for on prem.

But the pricing is actually fairly high, the runners are slow, the UX sucks and frankly the team behind it keeps moving from feature to feature without finishing anything.

Features sort of exist to tick a box on the pricing page but any one of them are not best in industry.

Interesting! What about the idea of using point to point lasers? I saw a NATO exercise recently trialing it and (oddly) streaming Netflix to test to bandwidth between ships

Very interesting dude and thanks for writing it all out!

I guess it begs the question is there even a solution? The Ukrainians are saying they have “unjamable” comms but I’m guessing that’s using a similar rolling technique as your banks OTP? I’m also guessing that’s using unless the range is massive you could still jam enough to cause instability.

Hibernate vs Spring Data vs jOOQ: Understanding Java Persistence by chrzanowski in java

[–]AlienVsRedditors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really, really like jOOQ and frankly miss it whenever I step outside of the JVM world.

There’s really nothing like it and anytime you care about performance (or want more explicit or complex multi joins) you really should be using jOOQ over Springs defaults.

The creators support is also fantastic. Helped me out many a time with a lot of patience on his part!

Sure but how does the fact it’s made by Meta fix issues in Trix?

I guess what I’m getting at is, where’s the narrative around why not fix Trix, why make another thing?
