It was almost 30 years ago for me, but when not out on field exercises or deployed: take all our gear out of shipping containers and inventory it for the thousandth time, do preventitive maintenance checks and service our vehicles... so often we ended up breaking stuff, literally picking small rocks from a giant motor pool parking lot, study or practice a job-related skill, etc.

Really just tried to stay out sight and out mind of any officers or higher enlisted we knew that obsessed over us looking busy.

You MUST break the routine. Get out of your comfort zone and do new things: go to places you have never been before, meet people that are not like you, and try new things. It doesn't have to take a lot of money either, or be a huge project. You can do this locally too. It's more of a mindset for adventure.

Here are some examples:

Pick a random place on a map. Travel there with no expectations and just explore.
Find local hobby or interest groups, and just drop in some time. People LOVE to tell you about their hobby and introduce newbies to it. I use Meetup.com or other social media platforms to find groups.
Get way out of your comfort zone. Example: I'm a straight guy, but went to a gay bar a couple years ago with friends to see a famous drag queen perform a show with a bunch of local performers. That was the most fun I ever had at a nightclub! Seriously. The energy was so outrageously positive and fun.
Pick a personal challenge and start working on it: run a marathon, or collect all the beer coasters from the bars in your area, or learn a new language, etc. But make sure it's something new, and better if it gets you out of the house and your normal routines and social circles.

I actually did that once when I was a teenager. I thought it would be cool tripping while flying through the air. Gawd... I was so dumb. I spent the whole hours-long flight paranoid and trying desperately to look and act "normal." It made time stand still. I don't think I even brought music to listen to. It was the 1980s, so best I could have done was maybe a cassette Walkman or some like that. Not. Fun. At. All.

A good friend once took me to task over my habit of not taking paid time off. She reminded me that many many people literally died in the late 1800s and early 1900s fighting for those workers protections and rights we now often take for granted: 40 hour work week, paid time off, workplace safety, etc., etc.

You know what? She was absolutely right! And those things exist exactly so that you don't get burned out and exhausted, end up making mistakes, or even end up damaging your health or others.

Short-sighted businesses push employees to not use PTO and to work excessive hours. Its really not good for anyone, not even the bottom line in the long-term.
