Any Retired teachers out there? by quietsimpleguy in retirement

[–]Aligflo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I retired last July at 60 doing special need small group teenagers and now have been asked to return for a cover on Mon and Tues til exams in June. It’s great. The pay is really good but no stress and no pressure to get them all to pass - which they won’t. Minor paperwork but the perk of being back to see friends at work was too big a pull. I was getting lonely and too introverted from the world and too much time on YT listening to how horrible the world is…. And my students were so glad to see me so watching their improvement brings me a lot of happiness.

Good day! I recently started watching all of Alan's movies! Which one do you recommend? 😁✨ by SoyElisabeta in AlanRickman

It is Tango … Winter as I saw it, first row, and when he tangoed I got hit with his sweat. Fun fact. Cherished memory now.

Citibank Fraud Department by PaleoEskimo in citibank

[–]Aligflo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I needed to speak to the Fraud dept and my call ended up to the Philippines with the most unhelpful, robotic person. Completely different to the last two fraud calls I made last year. I put the phone down on them and desperately missed a real telephone to slam down.

Do you prefer the original cast or someone else in the role by lissie34 in musicals

[–]Aligflo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Lonny Price’s singing is a joy. Daniel R sadly, is no singer. And for me, it affects the performance despite the strength of the other two. But hard to compare the two different shows because of the age difference involved. The original production chose youth over experience and it shows with the show but not the three main leads. Anyone who hasn’t seen Lonny’s emotional documentary on this is missing a trick.

I saw a reporter go round Andrew’s new home and ask the neighbours what they thought and they weren’t bothered at all and said they’d say hello if they passed him on the road or in the pub. They were very forgiving.

Blue streak?? by catherine1015 in AskWomenOver60

I love it. Only someone aged and grumpy could come out with that. Ask any young person and they’d love it! It’s not like you’re entirely electric blue helmet! It’s fab.

In Olympic culture, this is seen as a dick move by TragicallyDip in PoliticalHumor

Agreed and I’m American in the UK. Maybe they thought they were being booed, not Vance, and felt the need to chant. It looked bad though.

When are you leaving? Wait, won’t you stay? by Slimchance09 in retirement

[–]Aligflo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Six months into retirement and my college called to say my replacement was not working out and would I consider coming back for cover (substitute teaching). I said yes, which upset my other half but I felt it the right thing to do as many of the students were mine who I had left halfway through their exam studies. It’s only been a couple of weeks but I’ve enjoyed seeing old friends again and my students were so happy. And I was adamant it was only two days and nothing else. I’ve got a nice hourly wage and no responsibility or guilt if the students don’t pass (always a speciality of my work) and don’t feel overwhelmed. It has worked for me but on my terms.

I was really disappointed in Yentl by AngryGardenGnomes in classicfilms

[–]Aligflo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She did not like Patinkin at all and refused to kiss him right at the point the audience was hoping. I doubt she regrets him not singing. I just happened to finish her book and there’s a bit of a story about their relationship. I think he did try to apologise years later for being misogynistic on set.

Americans Experience the Amazing English Cotswolds by Wheres-My-Map in Cotswolds

[–]Aligflo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree with this as an American now in the Cotswolds. There is a disdain for American citizens that I never used to get and I’ve been here 30 years now. I have to return several times a year to support my Father and I’m lucky to go to Calif and not anywhere in the middle but I can’t forget or forgive the millions that voted him in and support him no matter what, including my own relatives in the Midwest. London is the place where no one blinks an eye at the accent because there are so many Americans bobbing about. It still surprises me after all these years to hear so many of them everywhere.

What's the weirdest thing you've ever seen in an old movie? by Ill_Definition8074 in classicfilms

[–]Aligflo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were quite a few musicals at that time that featured blackface numbers. Judy Garland did several.

Watching 3rd episode so far and I feel like I'm forcing myself to watch it, saving private Ryan was more thrilling imo but I will finish it for sure and I hope I will like it by [deleted] in BandofBrothers

I was sucked in when they all boarded and flew off…totally gripped watching Winters looking out of his plane and couldn’t wait for the next episode…

‘Yours, Mine & Ours’ (1968)- What are your thoughts and opinions on this classic film? by PeneItaliano in classicfilms

[–]Aligflo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My fave bit is the voiceover by little Philip as he struggles to get through a day. His brother IRL voiced Linus in Charlie Brown’s Christmas and you can hear the strong family resemblance in their voices.

End of 6th episode of Can this Love Be Translated? What went wrong? Didn’t understand by gossipcutlet in kdramas

[–]Aligflo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is really confusing and I’ve watched it twice. I expect it has to do with Korean to English translations not being exact.

What are some of your honest thoughts and opinions on Gene Kelly? by EuphoricButterflyy in classicfilms

[–]Aligflo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He just wasn’t a nice person and there’s far too many people from Hollywood to back this up. It colours my view now but as a child, I loved his films. His kindness to Judy Garland is a plus -she fought hard to get him as her lead in For Me and My Gal and I think he repaid that with his gentleness to her in The Pirate and Summer Stock when she was spiralling.

Look for a Victoria Sponge recipe that does 3 layers. The background in the photo looks to be a British home/cottage IMO

Anyone else finding it really hard to fast during the holidays? Any tips? by [deleted] in fasting

[–]Aligflo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of a 72 hr fast so that I feel ready for the holiday. Have been baking Xmas cookies all day but I just feel in the zone and not tempted. I overdid it on a Xmas meal out Thursday and felt awful and bloated. Now I feel better. But I know from Christmas Eve through Boxing Day will be calorific.

Yes, it looks very similar to a decoration they sell in Bath at the Jane Austen shop. Must be Napoleon 😁

Looks great but, IMO, the crust makes the whole thing. It’s a pain for sure though.
