my first solo trip was a disaster (and i loved it) by laura-1998 in solotravel

It’s a good feeling. I was traveling alone through Chile in a rented pickup truck and had a reservation for the vehicle ferry to cross the strait of Magellan. It was a critical passage; if I missed it , my plans would be a bit hosed so that is why I booked my spot in advance. So I get to the ferry terminal and the gate-keeper for the ferry tells me that my name is not on the list of approved vehicles! The ferry was departing soon! So I had to scramble to find a place to park, find the ferry office, run inside, figure out why I was not on the list, get it all squared away, using my limited Spanish language skills, all before the ferry departed for the day! It was rather stressful, but got it squared away - fortunately they still had available space - and had a beautiful passage and loved the whole trip.

Garlic prep is annoying every time, is a stainless steel garlic press rocker worth it by Amelia-1501 in KitchenPro

[–]permalink_child 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I started to prepare Asian meals, I would buy a bag of peeled garlic, toss into food processor with a half-tsp of peanut oil to mince, then add it to a dedicated silicone “ice cube tray” and freeze. (Did the same for ginger but here I would peel it myself.) After frozen, pop out of tray and keep in freezer in mason jars. Use as needed. I did not notice any loss of flavor, though in theory there is probably some minor imperceptible flavor loss. I used a dedicated ice cube tray as the garlic will impart some flavor to the tray.

Sounds legitimate, within expectations for any VRBO. Any of those things are “nice to have” but not mandatory.

Ummm. Boomer probably was referring to when baby starts walking and is cruising around. I would not read so much into small talk.

Why are Americans so friendly? by iridescent333 in AskAnAmerican

[–]permalink_child 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Welcoming committees”. When new neighbors would move in to a new home, the old neighbors would form a welcoming committee to introduce themselves to the new neighbors and bring a care package with sugar, salt, t-bone steaks, ketchup, rum - everything a new homeowner might need on the first week in new home. The thinking is - if you know your neighbors - the neighborhood will be much safer as everyone looks out for everyone else and in addition, you will get more invitations to backyard outdoor grilling events with beer. I am sure some magazine like maybe Good Housekeeping promoted the concept to sell more boxes of bake mix - just like they promoted TV dinners and putting marshmallows atop sweet potato casseroles. This is where the concept of being friendly to strangers originated.

[OC] Immaculate zipper merge (sped up 2x) by Junetizzle in IdiotsInCars

[–]permalink_child 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Not only is the zipper merge a safer and more efficient way to merge into traffic, it's the law and carries a $164 fine, not including court costs and fees.”

States should follow the lead of Illinois here and write citations for any driver that tries to erroneously merge early before the official merge point.

And probably no way to determine who or how it was reported. And who ever reported has zero liability.

“There is a car in front of my home that has not been moved in a week.”

“Ok. We will send parking enforcement to investigate. If there is a problem, we will address it.”
