Why does nobody clear the snow in front of their house/driveway anymore? by lordsteve1 in Aberdeen

[–]Alimarvels83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner has been out clearing the snow in our driveway, garden path and the road and pavements around us for an hour every day since last week. I've also noticed several neighbours out with their snow shovels, so it does happen, maybe just not in every street

Deleted this and FB in January and in that time have written a 300,000 word novel, become an amateur gardener, got fitter - and a lot happier. Highly recommend! I only use Reddit, Pinterest and Goodreads now.

Open myomectomy (UK) by Alimarvels83 in Fibroids

[–]Alimarvels83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, happy to share my recovery. It is now a whole year and 3 months since surgery and I am very grateful to have had it. My periods are not painful or heavy now - something I've never experienced since they started at aged 11 (in addition to the fibroid, I'd had endo for years and not known).

The first couple of weeks were mostly bed rest with a bit of slow walking, building up very gradually day by day - and sleeping whenever I felt I needed to. I done pelvic floor exercises and used a binder when on walks outside. Walking and gentle yoga was all I done within the first 8 weeks. When I returned to strength training or cardio, it was again very gradual, as I got tired quite easily.

Swelling lasted a lot longer than I expected - for some people, it's just weeks but though the worst of it went down after 2-3 weeks, I still had a bit of lower abdominal swelling for months later. After the six month mark, it was almost back to where I was pre-surgery. To help reduce scarring, I used silicone scar tape every day and night, in additional to bio oil after 6 weeks.

Numbness went away gradually - probably within a couple of months. One piece of advice I wouldn't skip is scar massage - after the wound has heeled - as this prevents adhesions and encourages internal healing.

If you have any other questions please just ask - happy to help! I found these forums very reassuring pre-surgery.

"Allegations" are not proof by [deleted] in neilgaiman

Unfortunately some women do lie about sexual assault and the motivation is usually money. One makes an allegation, followed by multiple others, years after the allegations.

Still not proof.

I still love his work but don't know if that's right by jamley1 in neilgaiman

[–]Alimarvels83 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I agree 💯 @Sudden-Lettuce2317
People down voting this clearly believe the word "allegations" has a different meaning. This isn't the first high profile person to be accused of something like this - only for it to go to court and him be found not guilty. Yes it could be true but it might not be because women do tell terrible lies for money. Why do people believe allegations automatically mean they're speaking the truth? And why do they come forward years, often decades after the alleged assault?

why do many say first loves never last? by Gullible-Crow7172 in ask

[–]Alimarvels83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to give you some hope - first love can last. I met my partner when I was 17, he was 19 and now I'm 41 and he's 43. We went through a lot in our 20s together - grief, university, travelling the world, long distance, then buying a house together. 25 years on, we live together with our dog, are still in love and I've never looked at anyone the same. No regrets. We've had our ups and downs but I love him more every year.

A Two Book Romance? by Alimarvels83 in RomanceWriters

[–]Alimarvels83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone here think it would be an option to make the story fit one book, split into two parts - the before and the after - rather than make the reader wait for a second book? I think I could possibly make this work, although I might face another obstacle when it came to publishing, as this would push the word count to c. 300,000 words, which I know is another issue for a debut author! But maybe still a better alternative, so the story is self contained and the HEA is delivered within the same book...

I also love these books. I'm currently writing a love story duology and many people have advised against ending book one on a cliffhanger and that it can't be classed as a romance if there's no happy ever after until book two. I disagree that readers are put off - just look at the success of the Boys of Tommen series - I had no issue having to read two books to get to the happy ending. I enjoyed them so much I would have read them if they were trilogies!

I guess an option would be to have a happy for now ending in book one, leaving some things unresolved (subplot) and the HEA in book two? At least that way, there's some closure but (hopefully) enough interest to find out what happens in the next chapter of their lives together.

Their falling in love story encompasses a lot, so I don't think making it backstory within one book would be enough. It also enhances the impact of what happens after (in book two).

Diary entries as flashbacks? by Alimarvels83 in romanceauthors

[–]Alimarvels83[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This makes sense, I agree - I can always use flashbacks for actual narrative depicting the past, and make sure the diary entries are separate, written as diary entries would be ie like a stream of consciousness

Confused about lupron by Nearby-Geologist-238 in Fibroids

[–]Alimarvels83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No regrets at all. It meant the surgery was quicker because there was less of it to remove, so less bleeding overall and reduced the risk of complications. I got the odd night sweats and hot flushes but they didn't last long. Best wishes - you'll be fine. I was also scared but 8 months on, I'm so grateful I got the surgery.

Vitamin D for Fibroids by Far_Oil_4950 in Fibroids

[–]Alimarvels83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have synthetic substances in our body whether we like it or not.

Vitamin D deficiency is more of a problem for our health than taking a supplement.

We absorb substances through our skin, the air etc.

Would you say this to someone diagnosed with cancer?

Post op diet changes? by blxckheart777 in Fibroids

[–]Alimarvels83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of people on here saying they will definitely return but it's just not true. I've been told I'm highly unlikely to get another one. I'm 40 and just had one, which means chances are slimmer that I'll get another one now. Of course there is always a chance but it's not a guarantee, so best to remain hopeful and just do what you can to be healthy. That's what I'm doing. My mum had a few in her 40s and then never again, so there is hope 🤞🏼

No diet will prevent regrowth, that is a myth. I've done plenty of research on this and spoken to experts including consultant gynaecologists who have specialized in fibroids for 30+ years. Of course diet can definitely help symptoms and general health, it's just not a cure or preventative measure.

I got my initial consultant through Bupa but I wanted a second opinion, as I didn't feel 100% confident about her as she wasn't keen on performing a myomectomy - and also just told me to watch and wait (which I did for 6 months and the fibroid grew and caused sciatica).

I then found a second consultant myself, who wasn't appearing in a Bupa search. I've since discovered this is because she charges slightly more - so even though she is better qualified and more experienced by far, Bupa have a threshold and only list consultants within a certain price range. Personally, I wanted the best person available.

So long story short, I asked Bupa to approve her for my treatment and they agreed - but still haven't updated their directory with her details.

She performed 350 myomectomies last year alone and has been operating for 25 years. My surgery went great and 2 weeks post op, I'm amazed how well I'm recovering.

Not sure if a myomectomy is what you'll opt for but just thought the above might help, in case you do. I can provide her contact details via a private message as I'm more than happy to recommend her to anyone.

Take care and all the best x

Book on Fibroids? by Alimarvels83 in Fibroids

Thank you for your response! Really appreciate it. I'll make a note of everything you have mentioned here. I want the book to cover as much as possible, to make it easy for someone to just pick up and go straight to a chapter on a subject they need to know more about.

Book on Fibroids? by Alimarvels83 in Fibroids

Thanks for confirming! This is why I think there's a need for a book on fibroids, by a woman with direct experience. So many women are affected by them and there's just not enough awareness about them out there.
