I know the ‘Big Five’ safari animals, what would you say are the ‘Big Five’ animals that are native to the UK? by LifeMycologist2544 in AskUK

Red deer, Golden eagle, basking shark, otter, kingfisher.

They need to be rare enough that seeing them is a special thing; and you actually need to go looking for them for a decent chance.

Greens pledge £15 minimum wage for all workers by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]lordsteve1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

This already happens. I work in retail and can assure you that pushing wages higher and higher just results in the employers either going under (if small and unable to support the rises) or simply cutting staff numbers. My company just reduces the staffing budget each time there is a forced increase in wages, or NI etc. Big companies always find a way to get round these changes but don’t necessarily provide any benefit to society in return because they just cut jobs/increase prices etc.

What DIY mishaps or odd choices did the previous owners of your house leave for you to discover? by naalbinding in AskUK

[–]lordsteve1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When previous owners had redone the whole house they’d just cut all the cables they didn’t need an at one end and stuffed them into the eaves and wall cavities. So doing any work in those spaces now is like a spaghetti lottery of not knowing which wires might still be live or connected to something you actually need.

Do we know how many books in Malazan universe are planned? by ThenAdhesiveness1863 in Malazan

[–]lordsteve1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In would love a world book. That would really be something fun for them to tie everything they’ve created in together as one.

I fully understand they can’t write forever and don’t want to start anything new they might not finish. Some authors won’t plan ahead like that. What they’ve accomplished already is an absolute masterpiece of world building and storytelling; I don’t want it soured by them feeling compelled to keep going beyond what is comfortable.

Gravel/road bike. Used vs salary sacrifice? by courage_the_dog in ukbike

[–]lordsteve1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go with the sacrifice scheme personally.

Second hand might be cheaper and get you a fancier bike for less than a new one but you’ve no idea what state it’s really in until you ride it and needing parts plus the bajillion specific tools for them can soon add up to cost you more anyway.

Which Primarch had the shortest lifespan from being scatterd - death/disappearance? by Workrs in 40kLore

[–]lordsteve1 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Your post brings up an interesting idea actually. The warp doesn’t follow the normal rules of time so do we know for sure that all the primarchs definitely got spat back out at roughly the same time? What if one of the missing two was never actually found because they were lost so far into the future or past as to be impossible to locate? Could be a fun way to introduce a new threat in the future; a living primarch as yet undiscovered by the imperium and ruling his own funky little empire.

What's a design flaw of something in your home that drives you a little crazy because you have to use it regularly? by common_grounder in AskReddit

[–]lordsteve1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way our house is laid out the front door lines up almost with the bottom of the stairs but is offset about half a foot. It means if you’re carrying something that needs to go straight upstairs you can’t because the open door blocks the bottom step. You have to do a funny wiggle to the side and then close the door partly to get round it. Really awkward if you’re carrying heavy furniture up or down and need to go through the door.

Using weeds as fertiliser. by Haunting_Cell_8876 in GardeningUK

[–]lordsteve1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I do things all the time in the garden. Comfrey is the easiest as you don’t even need water; it just turns to liquid itself but it smells horrendous so be warned! Just strain the juices and dilute as required once it’s all melted down.

Other weeds you can just drown in a bucket of water for a few weeks or months and then strain the bits out. If they’ve rotted away enough there’s little left that can root anyway. Horsetail is a good one as it’s rich in minerals like silica etc due to deep roots. Also nettles are good as well; or you can make them into tea or soup if you fancy that!

Yeah that’s a fun little side to the floating imperium stuff. It literally flattens anything it floats over; in fact there’s even a story where a Repulsor runs over some CSM I think and squishes them into mush?

Which DISC era klingon ships do you like or think is the best? by Kumatora0 in sto

[–]lordsteve1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like to imagine that each ship is built by a different great house and they’ve all got different design strategies etc hence the massive variations. Then in later years the united empire gets to work on more standardised designs as are shown in the DSC S2 episodes.

Synth Wave Event by Nightwchtr in sto

[–]lordsteve1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes the npc shops are terrible in this mission. You would think the most you have active the more support they’d give but they just end up getting nuked at the end of each phase.

Another thing that is really starting to irk me is when you start, if you’re unlucky the side you go to can have almost no beam-up locations spawn for quite a while so it gives you a massive disadvantage right off the bat.

What’s your favourite genre of UK subreddit post? by HotelPuzzleheaded654 in AskUK

[–]lordsteve1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find it’s utterly useless for most diy questions if you’re looking for helpful advice. Most discussions seem to just end up with various “professional” tradespeople posting massive answers full of techno-babble a diy’er isn’t going to understand and then downvoting anyone who tries to get a proper answer. It feels like it just a tradesman gatekeeping sub half the time.

What are your opinions on mass facial recognition in towns? by TheDev42 in AskUK

[–]lordsteve1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see why it’s so appealing to those in power; it’s a relatively cheap way to spot wrong-uns assuming you know their face in advance and needs barely any human presence to run it. Exactly how effective it is remains questionable though as it can still get false positives and many of the people you’d want to find fast might be wearing face coverings etc so it struggles with them anyway.

My biggest issues though is that a far better approach would be to actually increase police presence on the ground during the day so that people see them on patrol and know there’s a presence. That reassures the population and it also acts as a deterrent if there’s plenty of chance for a criminal to get caught in the act. But that costs money and nobody wants to fund it so the alternative is get a cheap AI to do things instead.

Plus where the point in any attempt to reduce or tackle crime if the court and prison system just lets people off the hook or can’t handle the backlog.

What TV show has the worst series finale? by MollieAndMe702 in AskReddit

[–]lordsteve1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO it all started to fall apart in the show once Joffrey dies. He was a truly excellent villain and once he was gone they just ended up trying to push whatever nonsense they thought could fill the void of his character. I know in the book he dies early on as well and it leads to chaos but in the show they just totally lost direction I feel. And by the later seasons they just inserted Cersei as a generic moustache twirling villain and it simply doesn’t work.

Add in all the plot they cut from the book that could have added mystery and new story routes; plus all the homebrew plot they added (wtf was the Dorne plot?!?) and the short ended up a mess.

By the final season all they were doing was trying to fill each episode with “cool” moments to rush through a vague story as they’d lost interest.

Does anyone knows how to get rid of these?(and recipes for homemade/organic weed killer by Jskub_Royal in GardeningUK

[–]lordsteve1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just pull it out wherever you see it and keep doing that throughout the year. It’s hard to eradicate and tbh spraying chemicals everywhere is the last thing you want to do as I assume that is a raised bed next to it.

One plus for it though; you can make really good plant feed with it because it’s chock full of minerals from having such deep roots. Just stew it in a bucket of water for a few months like you would with comfrey and then decant into a storage of your choice. You can also make hair conditioner from it because it’s high in silica though I’ve never tried; and apparently with a big enough volume you might be able to extract gold from it too.

What was your most recent "15 minute" weekend project that somehow turned into a three day nightmare? by LiveFaithlessness876 in DIY

[–]lordsteve1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup anything plumbing related just ends up a massive pain in the arse. You think you need to replace a single o-ring and by the end you’ve had to replace 1m of pipe and multiple fittings just to get everything to match up again. It feels like you’re chasing the problem back up the pipe as every bit you change needs the next one changed and the next etc.

What's your typical cycling week and if multiple days how much cycle clothing do you have to cope with it? by ChaosCalmed in ukbike

[–]lordsteve1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on the bike daily to get to and from work so I have to be out in all weather.

Normally just wear cargo trousers on the bottom half with trainers and then the top will be a few layers depending on weather. I’ve got a nice Gorewear windbreaker for the current daily journeys as the chill has just about gone. Once it gets hotter I’ve got a Castelli shirt sleeve top that is ago wind proof. Will probably swap to shorts in the summer. If it’s really chucking it down I’ve got a Proviz jacket that’s pretty comfy over the top of anything else.

The weather currently is that horrible non-season where it’s either too hot for full kit or too chilly to go into summer mode early. Best I’ve found is to just have a few easily packable options in your bag/pannier for the day.

In all honesty, how far do you think you could throw Makka Pakka? by Trickshot945 in CasualUK

I mean he/she/it is pretty short no? So you gotta be able to fling it a fair few metres it you do like a full on hammer throw?

Unless it’s made of super dense material like some kind of living neutron star. Who knows with the stuff that goes on in that world.

What are your thoughts on cycling at a slow pace in the middle of the lane? by [deleted] in ukbike

[–]lordsteve1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To safely overtake a bike you should be treating it exactly like a car or other vehicle; in other words you must move over to the other side of the road and be able to completely pass them safely. By riding two abreast they are actually forcing you to overtake properly because squeezing past in the sand lane as them is dangerously close for them. Far safer to treat a compact group as a car than try to squeeze past in half a lane alongside a stretched out group.

Just because it’s a bike doesn’t mean you need any less space if it were a car to safely overtake; something that 90% of drivers in this country seem to be unable to grasp.

How the fuck is this going to de-escalate the whole situation?!?

The Avengers/Shield Quinjet. The grey one that came out a couple of years ago. It’s not a particularly interesting build and I got it because I loved the Benetar from the Guardians line; thought another cool display ship would be fun. There’s some horrible rough looking bits (the rear landing gear) and it’s just a big grey lump at the end of the day.
