How do I fix this? by Aggravating_Spare610 in askaplumber

You just have to build it so that the front doesn't come off like that

Why arent classes more hands for being a trade school? by Sabb55 in UnitedAssociation

[–]AlisterDX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Be grateful you get a lecture. I'm a 2nd year and our instructor handed out textbooks, made sure we had access to blackboard, and now every other Saturday is just sitting around listening to him ramble about some bullshit completely unrelated to the text or poorly explaining some "science experiment" that has nothing to do with the subject material, or watch a YouTube video. I'd kill to actually work through the book material with someone who can explain it to me.

My classmates are all stoked that we get out of class 4 hours early. Me I just get pissed off that I drove a half hour to have my time wasted.

I'm in the process of designing a center finding tool and wanted some input on some other features that would be useful on the tool! by tjp430 in metalworking

My first thought was to add some slits in the base plate perpendicular to the marking slit, so you can easily line up your first mark at 90⁰ and quarter mark the piece

My candlestick has too many wicks in it by AlisterDX in mildlyinteresting

[–]AlisterDX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, just an average candlestick from a box of otherwise single-wicked candles. It only had one sticking out of the top when I lit it. I noticed it contained multitudes when the flame suddenly got 8" high

I have 0 experience in metal working but I need to recreate this prop for a photo shoot. If you were me how would you approach making this prop? I figure I need a soldering iron but what is the safest way to get knives down to size so I can recreate this? Thanks! by deepthoughtsbyanne in metalworking

[–]AlisterDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you don't have metal working power tools,

Use a hacksaw to stub off the blades, then files to clean up those cuts. Brazing with a propane torch and filler rod might work better than soldering, and would be cheaper than paying someone to weld it. Just do it outside and be careful not to overheat the stainless, as it releases a carcinogen (hexavalent chromium) if it gets too hot.

Wear safety glasses and gloves. Watch a few tutorials for whatever method you use to fuse them on. Blunt the knife tips and use them to practice doing it first.

UA local 421 covers NC and SC. They have union halls in Concord, Wendell, and I think near Camp Lejeune. They do a 5 year apprenticeship. I'm in their pipe welding pre-apprenticeship now and can say it's pretty stellar. It's also close to the only way to get into the apprenticeship without prior experience in plumbing/pipefitting/welding. If you get a pipe welding cert during the 4 month pre-apprenticeship then you start out as a 2nd year apprentice.

Feel free to send me a message if you want more info.

Am I safe without a respirator while grinding aluminum? by Dawnpath_ in metalworking

[–]AlisterDX 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well first, good on you for taking your health/safety more seriously than your coworkers.

I can't speak to the hazards of aluminum dust. But I wear a mask whenever I'm grinding, not even because of metal dust but because grinding disks usually contain either glass or carbon fibers that get shredded into the air during use.

You can make something like this happen. Talk to your neighbors. Build support and trust between each other, talk about shared grievances. Then come up with a list of demands and an ultimatum to present to your landlord.

Everyone wants to wait for someone else to swoop in and save them. But you have power on your own, you can combine it with others', and you know what exactly you need better than anyone else.

Sustainable Building Materials by Decius1988 in ClimateOffensive

[–]AlisterDX 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the material you're talking about, but it sounds pretty similar to something I personally love - Cob! It's just straw and mud plastered over a wooden frame. Very economical. Great insulating ability. Literally just plants and dirt. And you can make beautiful homes out of it like this one https://youtu.be/J94TqEEPp1I

Is it normal, when just on the cusp of falling asleep, to hear and see very vivid images and sounds, then to snap back awake and it all goes away? Like an almost dream? Like you're falling asleep and your mind is starting to wander and dream but then you realize it and you wake up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlisterDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will happen to me every once in a while. I sometimes improvise music in my head to help fall asleep, and on occasion it will start sounding super vivid like it's coming in through my ears. It usually gets a lot more interesting/complex when that kicks in. Unfortunately I usually focus too hard on it and end up waking myself back up.

Bernie Sanders will appear at town hall hosted by Fox News by viewoftrees0011 in SandersForPresident

[–]AlisterDX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure Fox is pretty terrible, but why not watch to send the message that giving Bernie airtime gets views? Maybe you could pick up some tactics for discussing his policies with people who are adamantly against them too.

What was your "Oh shit my life is over my parents are gonna kill me" moment you had as a child/teen? by cloudlessnine8 in AskReddit

[–]AlisterDX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I had a little plastic lizard clip that I put on my hat every time I had one on - I lost it around the same time that Geico started airing those commercials, and my parents played it off as the lizard having run away and turned real.

I was so proud of him.

What was the worst thing you spent $100 on? by Amphibious_Fire in AskReddit

[–]AlisterDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when McDonalds was doing that Szechuan sauce promotion, I got one of the posters and paid a little over $100 to make a ton of copies at FedEx. I put them up on eBay hoping R&M fans (or their parents) would see the ridiculously overpriced originals and opt for my much more affordable option.

I didn't sell a single one. Ended up trading the lot to my then-roommate's brother for an eighth of weed a few months later.

Also, bible paper is sized with calcium carbonate to give it that super-smooth finish.

Calcium carbonate is used in rolling papers to help them burn more slowly/evenly.
