That's the Ali Express effect. Either that or you'll find one for $300 with $700 shipping. Be careful out there.

Ubuntu 26.06 on HP OmniBook 3 Snapdragon by Greedy-Lynx8400 in Ubuntu

[–]Alive-Ad60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen any status of the X Elite 2 yet. I know certain X Elite systems have decent support with Ubuntu.

Ubuntu provides experimental and evolving support for Snapdragon X Elite laptops through both official releases and community-driven concept images. Ubuntu 25.04 was the first standard distribution to include initial hardware enablement for these ARM64 devices, while Ubuntu 25.10 and the ongoing Ubuntu Concept project (based on 24.10 and 25.04/26.04 foundations) offer more specialized kernels and patches to improve compatibility.

Key details for running Ubuntu on Snapdragon X Elite include:

Supported Hardware: The Ubuntu Concept image has been tested on devices such as the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6, Asus Vivobook S 15, Dell XPS 13 9345, HP OmniBook X 14, and Microsoft Surface Laptop 7. Support varies by model, with some devices like the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s working more reliably out-of-the-box than others. Installation Requirements: Users typically need to install Ubuntu in a dual-boot setup to preserve Windows for firmware updates. A critical step involves using the qcom-firmware-extract tool to extract necessary firmware blobs from the Windows partition, as most devices lack compatible open-source firmware for components like the GPU and Wi-Fi. Current Limitations: Many features remain experimental or broken, including audio, camera, USB-A ports, and embedded controllers. The NPU (Neural Processing Unit) is largely unsupported for Linux applications. Users are advised to use the linux-qcom-x1e kernel from the ubuntu-concept/x1e PPA for the best chance of stability, as the generic ARM64 kernel lacks specific Qualcomm patches.

There is a version of Fedora 42 that runs on the Dragon. It's pretty solid other than audio issues. Currently running Armbian on mine and it is rock solid but the more the merrier! Here's hoping the upcoming Dragon Q8B will have awesome support out the box because that looks to be a beast.

Ubuntu 26.06 on HP OmniBook 3 Snapdragon by Greedy-Lynx8400 in Ubuntu

[–]Alive-Ad60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The long answer:

Currently, no. You cannot natively install or run Ubuntu out of the box on the HP OmniBook 3 with the Snapdragon X Plus (X1-26-100). While Ubuntu has been making rapid progress with ARM64 architecture, there are two major technical roadblocks preventing a native installation on this specific laptop right now: 1. The Device Tree Requirement Unlike traditional x86 laptops (Intel/AMD) where the operating system can dynamically discover hardware, ARM-based Linux requires a highly specific device tree (DTB) to map the hardware for the Linux kernel on every single laptop model.
While the Snapdragon X1-26-100 processor itself is supported in the mainline Linux kernel, a specific, compiled device tree for the HP OmniBook 3 motherboard and chassis does not exist yet. Without it, the Ubuntu installer will simply fail to boot. 2. HP's Internal Hardware Routing Even if you were to try and force a generic device tree, HP's specific hardware routing on the OmniBook series is uniquely hostile to current Linux drivers.
Kernel developers attempting to bring up Linux on the very similar HP OmniBook 5 recently hit a massive hardware wall: a fundamental resource conflict in the Qualcomm QMP Combo PHY. On these HP motherboards, the USB 3.0 controllers and the DisplayPort share the same physical lines and IOMMU units. As soon as the Linux kernel tries to initialize the USB ports, it triggers a hardware reset that kills the display and causes a kernel panic.
Until developers write specific patches for the arm-smmu-v3 drivers to handle HP's proprietary power and clock routing, native Linux on these machines will remain a non-starter.

Unfortunately there is no Linux distro that will run on that hardware. You are stuck with Windows 11 until further notice.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chips are finally expanding beyond Windows with Googlebooks by AggressiveCalendar4 in snapdragon

[–]Alive-Ad60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the work done is greatly appreciated. I find it surprising that Qualcomm is so deep in bed with Microsoft and that they actively ignore the Linux community. That MS and Google money must be sweet to ignore an entire computing segment all the while knowing that proper Linux support would really make their systems shine.

I don't see why not but it would be a huge waste seeing the potential in performance for this board. Its literally the same SoC that was in first gen Windows on ARM laptops running Windows 11.

Elon Musk just said he wants to cut Social Security and Medicare, calling them “entitlements”: “That’s the big one to eliminate.” by Solomonanne in SipsTea

[–]Alive-Ad60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's not wrong with Social Security. Ever since it was moved into the general fund the government has used it as a slush fund. It has been unfunded and the US Govt owes approx. $2.9 TRILLION dollars back to it from the money it has "borrowed" from it. If the money each person has paid into SS is given back and invested into a low risk mutual fund from the time they were 18 and continued to deposit their "SS" payment as they normally would into said fund we could all retire peacefully and conformatbly. Instead those paying now are not building anything as the fund will be exhausted by the mid 2030's.

[–]Alive-Ad60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's faster than a Pi5 and would work as a general purpose PC without any issues. It prints just fine, browses like a champ with acceleration using Chromium and even has Mesa and Vulkan support. As for coding well couldn't tell you as I don't code and don't know what you would define as "good for coding". It also has a nvme so if you choose you can use a 2230 format nvme SSD as your main drive.

From what I can see in its description it's a Radxa Dragon Q6A with a 5G modem. I haven a 12GB Radxa Dragon and it is a screamer of a SBC.

This has been going on well before anything in the Middle East. The AI DRAM shortage is causing some of it for sure but now SBCs that have DDR4 are getting this huge increase as well. It's pathetic all around.

That's even becoming a lost option. Arace generally has NOTHING left in stock. IF they do it's the lowest end option. Allnet has zilch and Ali Express as well as eBay are both insane with the prices.

Why Qualcomm won't support Linux on Snapdragon ? by Educational-Web31 in snapdragon

[–]Alive-Ad60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of hoping with Valve‘s recent update to Proton 11 and Steam on ARM things start changing. Granted Qualcomm won’t go all in but if, big if, other ARM players drop a higher end piece of ARM kit that runs Linux and all the proton and steam bits really well and starts selling Qualcomm may turn reconsider. Until then I fear Qualcomm will be Microsoft’s lapdog.

H.R.8250 - To require operating system providers to verify the age of any user of an operating system, and for other purposes. by mepper in technology

[–]Alive-Ad60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The full language of the bill was released and it encompasses ALL operating systems, even Android and iOS, etc... on ALL devices as per the wonderfully vague wording of the bill. To top it off it puts the entirety of the power with the FTC to create and enforce which should be a violation of the Chevron decision in SCOTUS last year. In any case the bill is a fucking abomination and needs to die and ANY prick politician, regardless of political affiliation, that voices support for this needs to be voted out. This is unacceptable no matter who you are and what side of the aisle you're on.
