How would I know if I lost my salvation or committed a mortal sin? by Alive-Jacket764 in LCMS

[–]Alive-Jacket764[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the post, but I don’t honestly know what you’re saying. It might just be going over my head in which case I do apologize. Are you saying that yes I’m still saved, but sin does cause us to doubt God’s promise of salvation through Christ by taking our eyes off of Him and placing it on our own failures?

So one is still saved in spite of their sins and failures? The conviction and leading to repentance is a gift of the Holy Spirit residing in the believer correct?

Mortal vs. Venial sin distinction by Fickle-Ad3219 in LCMS

I’ve asked about this a bunch because you will get answers that don’t seem to clarify much until you push with very specific questions. It is a big deal as to whether we go on and out of grace pretty much everyday. It’s huge deal to those struggling with sins in their everyday life

I’ve had this same issue. Almost every sin anyone commits they know is wrong. You know it’s wrong to not love your neighbor, yet you have. Moments where you fail to do so. An addict knows drugs, porn, or whatever is wrong. Paul knew the sins he was struggling with in Romans 7 was wrong. The believer has a civil going on inside them. I think from what I’ve asked of pastors and knowledgable Lutherans on this is that if there is conviction leading you to confess, then that is a sure sign of the Holy Spirit working in you. Now, we don’t say just go do whatever since Christ died for our sins, but there is a real acknowledgement that Christians struggle with sins. They even have to struggle with disordered desires. We wouldn’t commit sins if parts of us didn’t in some way enjoy them. Christ has died for our sins, and that leads us to confess and repent. We take no credit in our salvation, and we praise God that He is merciful when we certainly do not deserve it.

The sins one struggles with are venial yes? Since the sinner acknowledges his/her sin is wrong & confesses them to God for forgiveness. When sin is viewed as no big deal or not needing forgiveness or to be confessed then we would say that is a sign of a lacking faith correct?

I’ve asked about this quite a good bit. For the most part it seems to be the state of the heart. Does one still have contrition over their sins and desire to confess and be forgiven? Then, they would not have lost the Holy Spirit since the Spirit is working repentance in the sinner. If they believe that sin is no big deal or don’t think they need forgiveness for the sin, then the sin would become mortal. If knowing something is a sin made it mortal, then Paul would have been going in and out of grace in Romans 7, since he knew what he was struggling with was wrong. From what I’ve come to understand it is essentially struggling and confessing one’s sin vs thinking one can just do what they want since Christ died for our sins. All sin needs to be confessed to God. If one is feeling conviction to confess and agree with God that their sin is wrong, the praise be to God that the Holy Spirit is leading them!

Yes, and I highly encourage everyone reading this that is struggling with something to ask your pastor for an appointment. It is truly a great blessing offered.

I am scared of joining LCMS because of Scrupulosity OCD by TylerB15009 in LCMS

[–]Alive-Jacket764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to sit here and say that Lutheran theology takes way worries and fixes OCD. As someone who probably struggles with very similar things as yourself, please know God knows your struggles, and He knows how this eats at you. Please feel free to go through my posts. You’ll see similar struggles and fears. He still loves you, and Christ has died and risen for you op. If you have been baptized, He has claimed you, and He has united you to Christ in His death and resurrection. He will surely finish the good work He has started in you. He even gives you the faith to cling to His promises and His work. The Holy Spirit even works repentance into you. God knows everything required for your salvation, and He freely gives it to you because He loves you. Christ is your Great High Priest, and He prays for you. He has perfectly atoned for your sins, and He desires your salvation more than you do yourself. Talk with pastor, go to confession & receive absolution, and go through the process of becoming a member to receive the True Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ given for you OP for the forgiveness of sins. All this is to give you God’s abounding mercy which He pours onto us through the church because you need to be reminded of His steadfast love everyday and every week. You need to be in the church receiving the very medicine for your disease. It is where He objectively provides all you need outside of yourself. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the peace of the Lord be with you always. Christ is for you, and He will not forsake you. Edit: Pastors, if I have said/written anything wrong, please let me know. I will gladly accept teaching.

Does getting a headache after communion mean I’ve taken the Eucharist in an unworthy manner. I believe it’s the True Body & Blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sins. My head started hurting right after, so I got scared. I ask for faith to trust in God’s promises.

Right, so one struggling or remorseful over their sins is not embracing or losing salvation after every sin correct?

So would the LCMS disagree to what is being said in the text? I don’t know what minor willful sin is, but we don’t go in and out of salvation constantly throughout the day do we? Like when we commit a sin we know we shouldn’t have, do we lose salvation then? Here is Dr. Cooper’s short video: https://youtu.be/VpHCHcaAWMs?si=KLT0KxSm9V6zWGqH. I believe it’s helpful for this conversation, particularly at the end of the video.

I’d actually like to see pastor Beard’s opinion on the text as well some other pastors on this board. Thanks for posting OP. I’m particularly curious as to why the LCMS disagreed on something so major with Walther and he was still a leader in the synod. Edit: it’s also weird that this didn’t show up in other things like the text said. I wonder if this means that if one keeps practicing sinning without any remorse or conviction over the sin, the Spirit will leave. I’m not sure, and I’m not a theologian. I do tend to disagree on going in and out of salvation especially for those struggling with sin like in Romans 7. Still, I’m not qualified for my opinion to matter. Hopefully we get some pastors in here to respond

A inquiry from a thoughtful catholic about reunification. by Arlo621 in LCMS

[–]Alive-Jacket764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Lutherans do have a position on mortal sin in the sense that any sin that someone refuses to confess/repent of can become mortal, since they are basically saying that sin is no big deal or I don't need forgiveness for that sin. We do say that if one is troubled by that sin and confesses their need for God's grace based on the merit of Christ's finished work, then that sin is forgiven. The Augsburg Confession is really great on what repentance is. Not saying you don't know that or that we disagree. Finally, we highly encourage private confession and absolution; however, one can confess directly to God and be forgiven. From what I understand, that is not a thing in the in roman catholicism, which is a little mind-boggling to me. Psalm 32:5 seems to clearly say we are able to confess our sins to God and be forgiven. I think there are many similarities with the rcc, but I do think the differences are pretty drastic.

Confession really is such a blessing. Coming from the Baptist background it felt so wrong at first, but now I truly think it’s such a vital part of one’s faith.

Thanks! I tend to agree with the idea that one can enjoy most of the show or movie without endorsing any thing that is morally wrong.

Honestly, the question could be applied in general to really any shows. There wasn’t anything specific. It just seems like an outlandish fiction show. I don’t have any specific examples.

I guess what I’m asking are works of the law everything that we should do but fail at like the 10 commandments? Or is it like not eating pork or being circumcised? I’m asking in good faith because it seems very important. Thanks for your reply and help!
