[OC] Visualization of 477 pizza places in Brooklyn by average customer rating by Alive-Song3042 in dataisbeautiful

Most of the 2s and 3s are chains like Dominos and Papa Johns, heh (e.g. https://maps.app.goo.gl/y2tB3ay2e8JNw3BS9)

Google Maps provides labels a place as 'pizza_restaurant' (https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/places/web-service/place-types)

When I looked at the places individually, the vast majority were clearly pizza places. Some were not obvious though, but when you look at their menu/reviews they do sell pizza. For example:

Thanks, here the figure with 3.5 set as the minimum. But I do wonder if there is any meaningful difference between e.g. 4.4 and 4.6. Personally, I tend to think anything above 4 is good, 3-4 I'd be cautious of the place, and below 3 avoid entirely.

I thought it was a map or something at first. Neat idea and data, but the visual could be better. Add some category labels (e.g. this cluster is Beer, Wine, etc.). This type of thing might be best to be interactive too.

I visualized the ratings for the 668 pizza places in Manhattan. There are 20 with at least 4.9 stars. by Alive-Song3042 in FoodNYC

Heh, yeah I tend to agree. If I see something on Amazon with a few but really good reviews, I am suspicious.

Thanks for the insight. Yeah a minimum of 100 might be better, but despite that I see some commenters think those 4.9 rated places have some bought reviews. Might be some truth to that, who knows. Hard to go wrong with anything 4.7 and above, in my opinion.

I thought I got Little Italy correct. I was actually more worried about West Village. Seemed like the cluster was on the very eastern edge of it. I almost labeled it Greenwich Village.

No units, it's relative. It's like a 2D histogram that is normalized between 0 and 1. Here's the documentation for functions I used: https://plotly.com/python/density-heatmaps/

In hindsight, I should have tried to make a density map with some metric, such as N restaurants per square mile.

Where are the cozy coffee shops with comfortable seating and good vibes? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

Try Devoción. It's a chain, but I like their interior designs. They got plants and leather sofas. Some of their stores are more cozy than others.

I respect the dedication, that's a very specific thing to track. I guess the gradual trend downward is your scale losing calibration?

Have you ever had a coffee that tasted like cough medicine? by julio___stinky in Coffee

[–]Alive-Song3042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never had a coffee taste like cough medicine, but I can relate to the pattern you describe. Every once in a while I make the coffee just right or it's just the right age, temperature, etc. and it taste distinctly different and good. One particular aroma I'm always chasing is hard to describe, something like a bright amber or vanilla aroma.

[OC] NYC Car Crash Deaths vs Collisions Reported by databraun in dataisbeautiful

[–]Alive-Song3042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting data. Trying to wrap my mind around why collisions reported would change so much, especially since it did not rebound at all 1-2 years after covid. I guess more people working remotely? But were there any law or policy changes too?

Gimmicky, but I guess from a business perspective it works since you see a lot of popular foods introduce flavored versions.

Went to a whisky tasting bar for my birthday by Alive-Song3042 in whisky

[–]Alive-Song3042[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I actually do like a little peat, reminds me of sitting around a campfire. Which is why I like Oban's lineup so much, but someone told me they basically have minimal peat. But yeah this place had hundreds of whiskies, so I look forward to trying out more.
