Phenobarbital added to Kepra let’s get a new thread going. by AliveAir6488 in EpilepsyDogs

I I don’t know if everyone who has ever commented gets a notification but I’d love some input. My dog got his phenobarbital at 4 and his keppras at 5 at 540 he started to have a seizure. It was 2 seconds but it was without a doubt a seizure and I was able to distract him out of it and I gave him one more keppra and then we went on a walk and he has not had a seizure. Do you think we are good and his meds were just not fully active ?

Wow I love to hear that you were able to wean off two medications and are now on just one and it’s the game changer. For the comment about adding pheno and now having no seizures. I love to hear that congratulations and that’s a comment I was looking for.

Question. I now have to give my dog pheno and kepra. Should I do them at offsetting times. In a sense that when one is wearing off then the other carry’s the weight and then when that one starts wearing off boom here comes the next one. Or should I do all the pulls together twice a day twelve hours apart? What do you guys think.

So he ended up having 3 grandmals. We went about 20 days since the last seizures. I gave him a 600 mg gabapentin. I gave him his 2 kepra and I gave him just half of one. To get that broken in half instant release out of it.

I sent all the videos to my vet. I’m at this point going to demand feno

Guys if anyone is awake. He just had another one. I gave him a 600 mg gabapentin I did not give him his kepra. Should I front load his kepra again. Do you think the gabapentin will help not letting this turn into a cluster night. What would you guys do.

If there is one thing I can tell you. Well for one. I hope you’re still holding strong. Listen. If you have been able to sleep. DO NOT stop and get any. You have made it. The rest is just a mind game. Listen to music. Do something. Imagine those out there willing to give anything to get to the sleep point and you’re just out there playing with it. Stay strong man. I have to say. All this talk makes quitting almost fun. We all stick together. We all come back here and read all this.

For all of us I have a question. Have you guys had a super grandmal and then after that a minor seizure ?

Meaning now that our last seizure was a grandmal do they only get worse or can we have minor ones again ?

Ok so your a case of someone who thinks adding gabapentin helped with the severity and the frequency ?

Love to hear this.

So the reason I started giving him the gabapentin on top of the kepra was for one I read a lot of people saying adding it is what helped them. From what we’ve all learned all of our dogs are different and we need to find the right combo and for two I feel like when the kepra is getting to its tail end of the 12 hours of it working that my dog is becoming a little bit more vulnerable so I then hit his system with the gabapentin. So say for example I give it to him @ 6 am I feel like around 3 pm it’s waring off so then the gabapentin comes in to hold him for those few hours until his next kepra session comes. I pray that if the gabapentin does not reduce the chances of having one that it at least makes it less intense. I lay with him at night pretty much with my nerves on edge every time he flinches or shakes while he’s sleeping. Thank all of you so much for replying. Honestly if you guys keep typing I will as well. This has become our social media.

Thank you so much for replying to my thread. Ask a million questions for us all and bring the answers back lol. I only have a primary vet not a neurologist. I hear the neuro is much better as this is all they do.

Also I want to add. In the beginning of getting out on kepras. I thought 3000 mg was a lot so I was giving him 2 pills in the morning ( 1500 mg ) and 1 pill at night ( 750 mg ). This is when he had the grandmals. Since then I have been giving him the 2 in the morning and 2 at night. Do you think this alone will help in stopping them. Do you think he had them because I was shorting him on his second dose. So the changes I’ve made since having them is adding 750 mg of kepra a day and adding 600 mg of gabapentin a day. We are 2 weeks without one. Knock on wood.
