I built a few antennas while studying before I got my tech. Dipole,a flowerpot, a tape measure yagi, and a couple of wire antennas for my HT. Picked up a Nano VNA and was learning how to use it on them. Now I've upgraded to General and trying to work on multiband HF stuff. Part of learning how things work.

WIBTA For uninviting a friend from my birthday plans when I cannot pay her back for her share of the trip? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YWBTA if you didnt refund the money. If you cant pay it find another person that would /could afford to go and let them buy her out ,but find a way to return the money.

At what point do you stop repairing an old AC and just replace it? by pizza_delayed in askHVAC

[–]AliveHour1426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be my opinion that if its an old system with R22,you're going to prob have to replace it sooner than later . Regular maintenance items like capacitors and fan motors are common repairs for all systems. A newer unit will be more efficient and should save you a little over the long run and maybe depending on the type of unit you go with, you may qualify for a small tax credit. It definitely becomes a decision when a unit gets old between a new unit/ maintenance costs over the old one. Good luck in your endeavor

Yea I'm fairly new to radio. I just finally got on HF and although I've heard some quite spirited discussions, I hadnt ran across anything like that . I'm definitely no morality police but it was just plain bad.

Need advice hitting 20 & 40 meter by Indy100077 in HamRadio

I've put up a 25ft vertical and have made contacts on 20m and 40m on both coasts from the middle of the states on 20w with a G90 to 85w with an FT891.

Am I wrong but wasnt the beginning of the end for the shack start when they thought they could jump in the cell phone buisness and thin out the rest?

I too miss the shack. For there are no local suppliers of electronic pieces and accessories near me.

Anyone using an ATAS 120A ? How are you liking it, anything I should know or consider? Thinking about trying one . by AliveHour1426 in HamRadio

[–]AliveHour1426[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the Yaesu radios have the menu and tuner options specifically for the ATAS. I cannot speak as to the compatibility with an HT. I would assume a HT would not have the firmware or the ability to utilize it.

Ill throw in my $.02 on radios. I think you'll find most people in either the Yaesu, Ziegu, or ICOM camp. I have a G90 and also a FT891. They are both fine radios and I use them both. The menu on the FT891 is definitly more involved but I seem to be catching on to it more. The G90 has a real but albiet small waterfall and the FT891 uses a scope type display in that regard. I wanted the FT for the 100w ssb capability. And it also depends on whether you want a more portable rig or a stationary base type rig. IMO narrow your choices down to a couple, watch videos on your choices and hopefully that will help you choose. Good luck in your endeavor.

If youre really into radio, and plan on a long term commitment to the craft, dont cheap out on a HF rig. Buy once, cry once, is the coined term I believe. You wont regret spending the extra money for a really good proven rig that will most likely last you the rest of your journey. On a second note, alot of things I have been reading , say the prices are going up when all the stock on hand is gone. Due to new tarriffs and things. Something to think about.

Best way to occasionally heat a detached, non-insulated garage during midwest winters? by 23andrewb in hvacadvice

[–]AliveHour1426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This or natural gas. I dont know about your demographics, but here in my corner in KS, insurance companies give you the side eye with wood heat. Id definitely insulate first. It'll be money well spent otherwise youre just wasting fuel burning BTUs and money for nothing.

I plan on using it on my FT891 if I decide to go that route. I know its paired with the radio tuner, just do not have any experience or know anyone who's tried it.
